I have a little story about CVN-65 from when I in the Naval Communication Unit on Midway Island 1966-1968. A big purpose of our unit was to relay message traffic. The Enterprise was passing fairly close once and Midway radioed them asking if they would like us to help handle some of their message traffic. They responded, "We don't think you could handle our level of traffic." Sort of good natured snub, and probably partially true. We had many transmitters, and many Technical Materiel Corporation 10KW transmitters, but they had some Technical Materiel Corporation 40KW versions.

M Dad was the lead Engineer on the F-8 and A-7 at Vought. He was a combat naval officer in WW II in the PEcific, and then worked 50 years for Vought. I worked there for several years myself in the late 1970s and got to work on the A-7 while there as well as other things. Great video!

You have put a lot of work & a whole lot of time in those...wow..!! At 2:22 I was excited to see not just one, but three of my beloved A-3 Skywarriors just aft of the superstructure and on the starboard side with their tails hanging over the water. I was a Plane Captain for them when I was in an aviation squadron from 1971-75 and land based at N.A.S., Norfolk, Va. We had four of them and they had all kinds of Counter-Electronic Warfare equipment in them and they were designated as ERA-3B. I loved taking care of "MY" planes; I let the air crews just borrow them for the exercises..LOL..!!

    • @marbleman52

@@JJModelMaking Yes, the A-3's look real good. I think that the wings did not fold quite so close to the top of the wing, but I assume that that is just the way the model pieces fit, so no big deal. Also, the scale looks a little off but that just might be me. To be honest, I have seen just a few models of the A-3 over the years and since I do not have one myself, I will not claim to be the 'expert' on the models. I appreciate the hard work that you have put in, and a BIG thanks for including a few of "my" planes...well done..!!

It’s cool seeing this. My dad served from 90-07 in the NAVY and he was stationed on the USS Enterprise before. He ended up working at the shipyard after getting out the service and he’s told me countless stories of working on many decommissioned aircraft carriers that he and some of his colleagues have served on. He said it hits hard seeing the ships they once lived on for weeks to months at a time so consistently end up not being functional anymore and just being broken down for parts. Love the video btw. Keep it up 👌🏿💯

I do HO model railroading and decided to add aircraft to my layout eventually deciding to purchase some carriers. My first purchase was in 1998 when i purchased a 1/400 USS Enterprise by LEE that came with a motor. Then i got a 1/400 Enterprise by Revell in 2001. THEN i got a 1/350 CVN 68 Nimitz made by Trumpeter that i purchased in Japan. Not seeing the time to put them together, i started looking for diecast carriers and opted to buy a few of the GI Joe Saratoga carriers by Hasbro. Now i have two of those and ended up selling my LEE and Revell carriers some years ago on ebay. I still kept CVN 68 for the effort i put in to mail it and just can't find something like that normally.

    True story
My brother was on the Enterprise
He was an S-3 Viking computer guy.
And he was in port at Fremantle AU.
    My ship was USS Tripoli
    USMC. Machinegunner
We were ordered to drop anchor about 1 mile
Outside of Fremantle. They didn’t want two
Military ships in at same time.
I walked up to my 1st Sgt and said
“My brother is on the Enterprise
can I go visit him ?”
    1st Sgt said
“What the F do I look like, a tour guide ?”

I have no idea how many Cat shots and arrested landings. Once went off the angle deck with out a Cat. The plane was fully loaded and we went down 1/2 way to the water. Once we took some boiler repair supplies to USS Independence so one time on and off her.

Looking good! Well done look forward to seeing the finished ship. I only wish they would come out with a 1/200 scale model of the Enterprise. 🤔

I am impressed by the USS Intrepid, you definitely took great care with constructing that model. I have the Tamiya USS Enterprise quarter assembled, and it has been that way for 15 years, the sametime I have been with my now wife.....we just do not have room for assembling and displaying it.

Thanks, very kind of you to say. I thoroughly enjoyed building both ships. It was a bit of a race finishing the Enterprise while my wife was pregnant with our daughter

That was a very impressive collection! I too am fond of such models, the scale at which these are made is perfect with clarity of details both with respect to the ship size and aircraft

Very cool collection of huge ships. You never really get how big till you see them. I got to wander the deck of the carrier Lincoln and it is enormous.
