    Bro, you perfectly timed the on and off. When you said it, you did magic. Lights flickered inside the house! Of you said it even more, it would be satisfying.

    If your lights are doing the "dance of death", so are your appliances. First turn off the main breaker to protect everything from those surges. Then watch outside lights (streetlight, neighbor's houses) for the power to become stable.
    We've experienced enough brief and day-long power outages to now keep flashlights in every room and have UPS units on all the electronics.
    For our most recent 12 hour outage (caused by 7"+ of snow), I used the solar generator I've been assembling over the past year. Still need a gas generator for central heat but the 540AH battery bank can keep fridge, a few lights, internet, etc going for about 24 hours. If it's not too cold, the gas logs in the fireplace can keep about half the main level of the house comfortable.

    What I can guarantee was happening was either at your main/sub power station snow piled on lines causing shorts, or a tree was on the line causing it to ark

  • @loganjoy-koer5936
    @loganjoy-koer5936 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    all of that flickering could be a sign of big problems at the generation side not being able to supply stable electricity, which could be caused by shorts from fallen trees due to snow.

    That arcing/brownout thing is awful. I once had it during a briefing in an apocalyptic lightning storm at an RAF station in Yorkshire. Lights went off, then every time the OIC tried to speak, the briefing room speaker system would start pouring out deafening 50Hz hum. Not good - it's quite intimidating when the systems we rely on and know for total stability go wrong. Respect for linemen and electricians.

    That flickering and flashing, if someone hasn't already mentioned it, is phase to phase arcing on the primaries. More often than not phase to ground will trip a cutout or open a recloser due to the load which is when the power completely goes out. I'm surprised with that much arcing on the primaries that at some point you didn't have a voltage sag where you lose a phase. Now those are very interesting, and admittedly a little creepy. Don't believe me? Just try running your microwave during a voltage sag (known in the US lay terms as a brownout due to the lowered voltage causing incandescent lights to glow glow more of a brown being starved for voltage). Okay one other thing. You never want to use pine, pine needles or pine sap in a wood burning fireplace. The residues those put off are an excellent way to start a chimney fire, and the last thing you want is to have no power AND have your house burn down.

    1) Turn off all electrical systems during power outage. For one to reduce the load to help it come up again, and also to avoid damage by on-off bursts as you said in the beginning.
    2) Don't burn green organic material. It doesn't produce any heat, but hell of a lot of smoke.
    3) Do not put a plastic bag over lights. They'll get hot and damaged, the plastic melts.

      Just turn your master switch on your breaker off. There you go, no power! You can leave it like that for over a year according to the internet. I only recommend horsing around with this thing when you must, like when nothing else works. Example being faulty smoke alarms. I would know all about that. Taking the battery out did nothing because of the house electricity most likely. But the smoke alarms at least went from full on alarm mode to just the simple 1 beep low battery chirp like what they were doing when we bought the house. My room used to look like something out of a horror movie. I’m so happy that they painted it, because I would be sleeping fewer nights if they didn’t. Most of the stuff in my house is brown, never knew why and still don’t, it’s just some kind of theme I guess.

    Glad I live here in florida, but still I was without power for nearly 3 days when hurricane irma came through. We just took a car battery out of one of the cars plugged it into a power inverter and used it for charging phones. I also had some of those atomic beam lanterns and flashlights. Kept lantern on all night in case anyone had to get up to go to the bathroom in the night. Individual flashlights to see anywhere else. Those atomic beams are pretty bright. Of course canned food to eat. Only entertainment is what you can get on the radio or if you have enough cell phone/tablet/ portable wifi hotspot battery which is what I was getting my internet through at the time and watching netflix/hulu on either phone or tablet.

    This is Exactly why I had a automatic standby generator installed 12 years ago every time during a blizzard or just because in the winter time my electric goes out

    you should do what fire security alert but buy like 200 of the emergency lights on the right board and dissemble them all and put them next to your existing every day lights so if something happens like this again you have more lighting in spaces you don't have a emergency light.

    The thing with gas burners is that you don’t need power to turn them on, you can light a match, turn the burner to on, then put the lighter on the burner

    Lights flickering is not good for the power grid. It can make the transformers blow out and trips some of the breakers
