These alarm are designed to only go off between 4 and 15 minutes of being at 400ppm. They are designed this way on PURPOSE. Why? Because they discovered people simply unplug alarms that go off all the time. So the industry agreed on the 4-15 minute and 400ppm standard (and that's what UL tests for). That is to say the alarms should not go off prior to 4 minutes and should not go off later than 15 minutes. All of the alarms showed here passed.
Do you think the nest passed to be honest ima heavy sleeper I don't think the heads up would wake most people up in my opinion it truly detected co at 16 minutes because that's when it would alert people.
Wikipedia has some good explanation of how the home units measure cumulative over time , not absolute immediate level like smoke alarms ...here is some of it " The alarm points on carbon monoxide detectors are not a simple alarm level (as in smoke detectors) but are a concentration-time function. At lower concentrations (e.g. 100 parts per million) the detector will not sound an alarm for many tens of minutes. At 400 parts per million (PPM), the alarm will sound within a few minutes. This concentration-time function is intended to mimic the uptake of carbon monoxide in the body while also preventing false alarms due to relatively common sources of carbon monoxide such as cigarette smoke." They go on to say portable detectors are made that will give an accurate instantaneous reading of actual level.
excellent video! I've seen videos online where people test these devices, but only leave them near the source for less than a minute and they never go off, so they assume the detector is not working. As we see in your video, all of these devices took several minutes to activate.
You are always welcome! Just get in skype, and find some people! You can add me if you want, my user name is just my TH-cam name but without the Landscaping part.
True, they do that so when the alarm does go off, the green and red LED don't mix creating a yellow color, although the green light will flash between the beeps of the alarm to still indicate the alarm has power.
I have a few of those too, as well as the first alert up-5a-12-a and a kidde KN-COPP-B-LPM co detector. It's good to have several of these things around the house.
@@egg928 There is a lot of features in the nest protect that is not in any of those First Alert devices featured in this video. In my opinion the Nest protect is better than Onelink safe & sound.
Honestly I wish that these would react a little faster. Because I don’t wake up very easily and not even a smoke alarm chirping in the middle of the night was enough to wake me up. But thanks to me watching this video just now I know the symptoms that there is possible carbon monoxide. I like how you tested these. Because unlike smoke spray CO cans is definitely not a good idea for the ones that are in the ceiling
Thank you! But like I said at the end of the video, these results are not valid. I would want to do this simulation at least 10 more times to prove the best detector.
Also because of the nature of a bag, wouldn't the bag be sometimes collapsed over some detectors's "intake vents", blocking the gas from entering it and preventing a quick alarm?
@@SERSafety You improperly conducted the test. You should start it at a drastically increasing PPM or at 400 PPM at first, and those should alarm much more quickly. With the Nest I have it took like 2-5 mins to activate the CO.

The Kiddie circle looking alarm went off first I think because it’s sensitive. That’s just my thought because when ever it’s a bit Smokey in my house, it’s always going off even when we hush it
It’s all in the UL code. They’re not allowed to activate before a certain time and at too low a PPM, otherwise they’re considered defective. Weird. It was mentioned in a different TH-cam video.
I tested our Carbon Monoxide Alarm with a car exhaust and then I discovered that it would not activate after leaving it in the exhaust for a long time so then we got a new one and it works. Just a reminder that the test button only tests the alarm part and not the detector, so maybe the alarm works but if the detector isn't working it's pointless.
2:43 We have one of those alarms and once our dog was sniffing the alarm and pressed the test button and it sounded, it scared me and instead of moving the alarm my parents removed it all together
Replace it with a nest protect, nest is better. BTW if it would react so fast to 200ppm it would be against code, he need to start the test at 400ppm or higher and it will wait for no more than 4 mins
I like the Nest Protect. It's well developed and gives verbal warnings before an alarm, which everyone wants when cooking, etc. It also runs on battery, wire, and battery and wire. Personnally I prefer the First Alert smoke/CO with the low pitched horn, because its low pitched horn and voice message will wake up everyone easier. Oh and I'd have opened the garage door and put the bag outside before opening it as a safety mesure.
@@BukuiZhao I think the reason he sucked the air out was because he wanted to make sure they were all exposed to Carbon monoxide, plus plastic bags don't really allow air to be moved to make way for the Carbon monoxide. it probably would have pushed the carbon monoxide out. also using a bag is safer than directly spraying the detectors anyway due to the dangers of even a low amount of carbon monoxide.
He did it in a sealed bag though, not to mention that once he opened the bag, he opened the garage door to vent out the area. If the CO reading was 520 inside of the small airtight bag, it would significantly dissipate in the large space in the garage to a safe level once opened.
