System Test 11 | Board 1 - No Power!

- In this system test, a “storm” hits my house and I loose power. But two of my fire alarm demo systems have battery backup and continue to function. I test both systems and show off the devices I have installed while working through the challenge of my room being dark. This was a fun video to make and I hope you enjoy it!

I've always wondered how fire alarm systems would operate during a power outage. Got this idea when one of my schools lost power
Yep. Fire alarm systems are required to remain functional in a power outage for a minimum of 24 hours. (At least in the US)

Great no power test. I have different kinds of smoke detector testers including smoke sabre. I also use compressed gas duster to blow the smoke out
Thanks. I currently have Smoke Saber and Smoke Centurion and I alternate between them from test to test. Also I ended up blowing out the detector with canned air but it wasn’t shown in the video for time reasons.

The system in my area that is common (other than firelite/notifier and system sensor) is a firelite addressable system with wheelock notification appliances

We had a tornado warning 4 days ago while I was in a different house for the weekend. The Power didn’t cut though but it did start flickering
That was one hell of a sweet intro
My setup is set up though when there's no power. This my box actually it's the lights and brings a bell my room to tell me there's no power. It sort of works or doesn't work but it worked great the last time I used it. May 2021 because there was a tornado warning issued. I'm a heavy sleeper that Bell is only going to wake me up. And the weather where you go off crazy it's a good thing to have.

What if you tried to make almost every spot a strobe and had none of them synchronized so when the system goes off it’s just flashing lights galore

At my grandparents house 🏠.The exit sign was on.not the emergency lights.
The power lines got strucked by lightning ⚡ and the exit sign combo stays on when the power goes out

I have one of the wheelocks but one of them is old
Fire alarm can still go off because when I was at school the power went out then a few mins later the fire alarm go off then they say disregard the fire alarm and every since the power when out the fire alarm kept turn on and they have to keep say disregard the fire alarm and it only happened in the morning when we are waiting outside
They sound pretty cool like the ones at my elementary school I believe
And 7:35 sounds like the ones at the mall I go to (the white one does)
How much current does the system draw when it’s in alarm? I imagine the batteries would drain quite a bit while the fire alarms are going off compared to a normal state.
Good question. I’m not sure of that information on the top of my head, and it varies depending on what devices are installed. Fire alarm code requires alarms to sound and flash for a minimum of 15 minutes if the system is operating on the backup batteries. So in theory it should at least last around that time.
The power went cutoff and my exit sign/emergency light combo turned on and the exit sign stayed on

Surprised the alarms didn't freak out after the power outage... I did a whoopsie when I was doing work on a locker box and pulled the power cord for a power cycle... Didn't realize it was also powering the firelite system. First thing I notice is beeping which I thought was weird for the locker and the alarms go off. Plugged it back in but no one said anything... I'm guessing I'm not the first person to fuck that up.
Most of the time the only thing that will happen is the control panel will beep in trouble indicating an AC fault. Older systems can have issues where the alarms will sound in a power failure which isn’t by design.

was the whole system including the fire alarms running off of the battery?
Yep! Those batteries power the entirety of the system.

Quick question: are the AS and NS alarms the 4 wire variants? If not, how are the strobes still flashing if the alarm is silenced?
Both the AS and NS are two wire alarms. They are able to be audibly silenced with Wheelock’s sync protocol; which the Fire-Lite MS-9200UDLS is capable of and was set to in this video.

@@ExitSign250 Sorry for bothering you, but I have one more question. I recently purchased a Wheelock 31T, which, if I recall correctly, is an AC horn. I have a DC panel, so I'm not exactly sure how I would make that work with my DC panel. Do you have any idea on how I could do that?
@CrappyPastry99 Hey again! No worries, you aren’t bothering me at all. Unfortunately with an AC horn it cannot be used with panels with DC outputs. However, if your panel has an alarm relay, you can connect your horn to it with an AC power supply if the relay is rated for it. While this method will allow the horn to sound when the panel is in alarm, you cannot silence or change the coding as the alarm relay is triggered when the panel is in alarm and resets when the panel resets. I hope this makes a bit of sense and feel free to ask anymore questions!

Do the smoke detectors actually make sound?
In North America most smoke detectors on fire alarm systems do not have any built in sounders. However you can get some with a sounder base or internal sounder. These are mostly common in hotel, dorm, or other sleeping rooms.

@@ExitSign250 ok mate, we get sounders in ours quite a lot (Apollo, Gent, Roshni to name a few, (fire alarm brands we have in the UK)
Pull stations (aka call points) (idk the actual names) KAC Call Point, Apollo XP95 Call Point, and this one old one I forgot the name of, it’s the old push to break glass one, while the first two are push to activate but u can reset them
