In this video: Finally! After buying the bike in 2018, I've finally got around to restoring the Rockhopper! I made a a dating mistake at the start, mistaking the colour scheme for an 88, whereas that scheme continued in to 89 BUT it's all sorted now and the bike is a beauty regardless of year. I still need an 88 though... - บันเทิง
These late 80's/early 90's MTB's just hit a note no other bike can hit. Brilliant as always!
Agreed. I also have had a 1989 rockhopper comp since 1994. I purchased it from the original owner. That time all of the color waves were becoming darker and graphics were more earth tones. When I got the bike it felt so good... I had never owned a bike like it before. I really wanted a more modern bike at the time and I thought that the hot pink and teal graphics looked a bit ridiculous in the mid-90s. However in retrospect I am so glad that I kept the bike. It hung on a wall from 1996 until 2008 when it was moved to my brother's climate-controlled basement. in 2020 Summer during covid I returned to biking like so many other folks. I fully expected everything to be worse for time but to my surprise and happiness, it road just like it did back in the day.
I'm so grateful to see such Loving Care go to somany classic bikes on this channel.
I seriously believe monkey shred needs a PATREON
They're just great all rounders I think! A "do it all" bike of the ages!
Beautiful job. Watching all your videos here in Sonoma county California
Thanks Ronni.
This is another level. I've been restoring older mountain bikes for quite a while now, but I've never had the budget to do an entirely new paint job. I applaud you for trying your best to keep it bone stock as possible. Great work!
Thanks! A "proper" paint job is quite an investment (over powdercoat/spray cans) but I think it was worth it!
Beautiful paint work!
I wish I could take credit for it!
I loved watching the transformation of this bike. It looks amazing now. I have a Rockhopper 2001 and still ride it regularly. Ive had it 21 years and its still going strong. All ive had to replace is the pedals, saddle, and tyres. Deore LX group set, Judy rockshox forks. Still in pretty good condition, absolutely brilliant bike for what I paid for it.
Good to hear it's still going strong!
The paint job and overall finishbis so good. A lovely bike in it's own right as well as being a bit of nostalgia.
those decals are A E S T H E T I C
Thanks! I just need to get my own spray finishes that smooth now!
Love this build. A close friend of mine had this year & model in the black sparkle/purple when we were kids. I was always jealous because it was so much nicer than mine.
It might have been a year or two later :) The '89 Rockhopper Comp only came in this colourway or yellow according to the catalogues.
You've outdone yourself on this one, mate. Many thanks. Please keep it on!
Thanks! Plenty more to come!
Extremely Beautiful paintwork. Made all the difference.
It does! So smooth!
Such a beautiful bike!
The seat, though…
As I said in the vid, it's the original saddle so I wanted to showcase it. I doubt I'll ever find a NOS saddle to replace it with but I will be riding it with something nicer.
Immaculate! Definitely has the showroom look. Nice work
Thanks!
Love that you kept it stock, and I’d have gone with a different saddle. All that beautiful new paint juxtaposed next to the tired sad saddle
But it's pretty rad seeing the original
Thanks! Oh yeah I agree the saddle is tired and bit strange but I wanted to "showcase" the original saddle. I'll use something different for riding.
My god that looks amazing, I would truly cherish the bike for the rest of my days. Incredible work! 😎
I plan to!
Lovely build, beautiful spray job, really enjoyable video. Something about those deore thumb shifters , takes me back to better times.
They are grand. Same bike here and the nicest one in my stable
Glad you enjoyed it!
That bike looks awesome. Great work!
Thanks!
Great restoration again!
Thanks!
I scored on a barn find locally in northern california, two of these, same exact color, one in a 26 inch and the other in 24, the guy i got it from said he bought it for his children, they took it around the block once, and were then sitting in a well kept garage for over 30 years, they didnt even have dust or spider webs on them. Original tires werent even cracking, dork disk is still clear. Wheels have absolutely no brake wear marks. Only flaw was, i rushed them home on my bike rack, and now there is a little rubbing on one chain stay of one bike and on the fork of the other, party foul on my part. Love your builds, keep it up.
I have one two. They are so we'll built and get conversation EVERYWHERE
Good score!
Well done sir!
Cheers David!
Beautiful job! Amazing bike!
Thanks!
Truly beautiful job. Running gear came up really well, top notch job with the paint and decals. This one's a stunner!
Agreed, I love the rear derailleur
Thanks!
beautiful work, just get a selle italia turbo and that's it!
That'd be saddle of choice to ride with for this bike for sure!
OMG! That is stunning! 😍😍
Thank you! 😊
Fantastic result! Beautiful restoration you've done there. I look forward to the next one. 👍
Thanks. Keep your eyes peeled!
That came out really nice and the shifting is buttery smooth real nice build man
I have the same bike and the thumbies are indeed buttery-smooth
I did find on the first ride something not so buttery smooth.... the middle ring is more... grinding metal than buttery smooth...
incredible restoration. im doing a 1999 specialized hardrock comp in a beautiful metalic green. I doubt it will come out as good as yours.
Love this build. I just picked up an 88 that’s all original. Your bike is really close to original and if you wanted it perfect, the pedals were originally black plastic Specialized pedals. The bottom bracket was the older cage bearings with axel and cups. The saddle was a plain black Specialized saddle with a red S logo on it. All are reasonably priced, but like I said, your bike looks amazing as it is now. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks. Yeah I know the original pedals. I had them on a standard rockhopper. They’re bloody awful though 😂 I do have the correct saddle though. It’s in the catalogue on retro bike.
Lovely job!
I ❤️ that
Me too!
Fantastic job, brother!! Keep that one!
Oh it's not going anywhere
Great job and a nice finish worth all the effort. I have a 91 Saracen Frenzy I still enjoy riding it👍
Good to hear the 91 is still being ridden!
A Turbo and some Zefal hooks & straps are, what I would add.
Paint job and decals look super!
A Turbo would definitely be my saddle of choice for a replacement. I have some Avenir clips and straps stashed away but they're reserved for my Diamondback Apex ;)
Excellent job! That paint work is beautiful. One of the nicest bikes I've seen for a while.
Thank you very much!
Great!
Spasibo!
boss of a job..dats wat we talk bout..
Thanks. 🤙
That is just beautiful 🚲👍
She's a keeper.
Great restoration! 👍 Well done
Thank you very much!
Increíble
Thanks!
Nice colorway
Thanks. I much prefer it over the solid yellow alternative.
That's a nice spray job! Looks great and a testament to the original.
I'm in Worcestershire, so just up the M5, so may make use of the spray skills!
Yep not far away! Give Josh a bell if you need anything doing.
In México we would say " quedó chula!" , very nice job, where can i get a set of decals like those??
Gracias. I can’t remember the website that sells them in the US but here in the UK you can get them from Retro Decals.
nice!
We would have thrown out the plastic pedals the second we got the bike home, so as far as im concerned, the rat trap pedals are original
Glad to hear!
Very nice work - well done! :-)
Thanks!

I don't think Google translate works for this.
@2:22 Nice, the painter did an excellent job. That's one thing I will never attempt is painting. I have no idea of what I am doing lol.
I attempted a proper paint job with spray gun etc on one of my cars back in the day. Zero experience. Cheap gear. A gazebo as a spray booth... It was... a learning curve! If I have the space in the future I'll definitely go down that route instead of spray cans
12:12 thought you were going to go tubeless for a sec, scary...
I had one of these in about 1991/2, same colour, but I don't think mine was a comp? Pretty much lived on it! It had been a hire bike in the lake District, I think I paid £90 for it. It had a rock shox sticker on the fork !
Retrobike has the brochures if you want to pin point the model. The Specialized catalogues are great as they list the whole spec too for each component.
Where did you get those new stickers from ?
All the bike specs including where to find parts like that are in the description ;)
Your heart was in this one. Terrific job. Makes me wonder when you will produce your own line of mtbs?
Produce my own range? Oh that’s way off! I haven’t even built my own yet, even tried brazing or looked at geometry etc. Yikes that’s a lot of work.
Just a thought. Am confident you're up to the task.
Hey Monkey, did you use stickers, or is it paint?
If it was adhesive, did you apply the adhesive and put the varnish on top? What kind of varnish?
Nice job as always. Best regards from Brasil!
I'm pretty sure these are decals that he purchased. They are impressive. it appears that he put the decals on without clear coating which is what specialized did during that year. Decals are exposed to the elements and more prone to tear off but it is period correct. I have similar original decals on my 1989 rockhopper comp in the yellow colorway
They were decals yes! Josh applied 3 layers of 2K clear after applying them so they are protected
Wow that bike came out brilliant as I knew it would. Where did you get the decals? Another great video thank you 😊
Thanks! I've listed all the bike specs in the description along with where all the bits and bobs may be found ;)
Awesome paint work! I have the same 89 RH Comp with the same colorway but pretty sunfaded. That paint job would cost about $800 here in SoCal. Are the decals from Velocals?
Sweet! So awesome to hear of another 89 the comp!
No no, they're from RetroDecals. Proper paint jobs definitely are on the pricey side! Worth it though for the right bikes! ($800 though... ouch)
Glorious Build! Love the '89 Rockhopper Comp! Do you have a Patreon?
I also have had a 1989 rockhopper comp since 1994 or so. I was a sophomore or junior in high school andI purchased it from the original owner. At time all of the colorways were becoming darker like the music and fashion and I thought that the hot pink and teal graphics looked a bit ridiculous in the mid-90s (they would have been fine up until '91 when Teen Spirit hit the airwaves) but it had such a premium feel and my budget was about $100
I had never owned a bike that had such premium feeling drivetrain. I loved looking at all of the cast aluminum bits and pieces... I honestly never wrote it much and it usually rode up and down the street with friends instead of on many trail.
My buddy's Giant Rincon had trigger shifters but his bikes forks also bent on just a few jumps.
I am so glad that my dad & brother kept the bike even whenmoved out of the country for over a decade and it hung on a wall from 1996 until 2008 when it was moved to my brother's climate-controlled basement until 2020 summer when, during covid, I returned to biking like so many other folks. I fully expected everything to be worse for time but to my surprise and happiness, it road just like it did back in the day.
My daughter loves the way it looks. And she also bought her first vintage bike (1999 Stumpjumper Comp).
I'm so grateful to see such Loving Care go to so many classic bikes on this channel! I hope you get a patreon together and I hope your community will keep supporting the work you do so well.
Some little notes about mine:
Mine was rolling on the original tires until last summer 2020. Those tires were specialized branded UMMA GUMMA. Mine still had most of its tread but the sidewalls were rotted.
It was a bit painful to watch you slice those original grips off (mine has the same grips and they are actually still spongy) but I know that's what you usually do and the Ritchey ones are a close match.
I'm so impressed to see you sourced and original seat and did your best to get the original style headset.
I can confirm that is the same type of seat I had. It was almost perfect but so painful so I replaced it with a 1994 specialized with a bit of cushioning ( I did hold onto original seat because it was in such good condition and I thought it would be good to put it back stock but finally gave it to the Goodwill sometime in 1998 or so unfortunately. Whoops.
again I'm so happy to see this building so glad you are documenting your labor of love. glad to see you're doing Amazon affiliates and I do hope you get a patreon together too.
++++ Great post from RetroBikeUK++++
"From a historical perspective, the 1989 Rockhopper Comp is arguably the best value XC Racing Bike in the company’s history. With the exception of the rims, tires, headset and paint scheme, the Rockhopper Comp was identical to the Stumpjumper, and compared to the Stumpjumper Comp the difference was frame tubing, vertical rear dropouts and Deore XT components. The Rockhopper Comp, Stumpjumper and Stumpjumper Comp had identical geometry and the difference between Deore II and Deore XT was mostly cosmetic and price. By todays standards with all the different component groups, options, frame materials and geometries, the price between a Rockhopper Comp and Specialized’s top XC racing bikes is several thousand dollars versus the 1989 difference of a couple hundred bucks! During 1989 and beyond, technical advancements, component groups (Shimano went from two to six groups - Deore II became SLX) and options exploded in diversity and price which stretched out product lines and overall bike costs leading the Rockhopper Comp to today’s current position - still a great value as an entry level XC race bike, but not the lofty height of 1989."
-RetroBike post
Thanks! I don't have a Patreon or anything like that at the moment. Maybe soon!
Thanks for the info too. I'm glad your bike has survived well all this time!
I know Mongoose is not as special as S works. But love to see a older 80's or 90's rigid Mongoose ATB worked over.
I have the Amplifier ;) I guess I could keep my eyes out for a rigid though
Any idea where to order the stickers for it?
How have you been liking the Panaracer Smoke+Dart combo? Do they by any chance handle somewhat like modern compound? To me, they look like an interesting balance between old and new. I quite like especially that the tread pattern is much more aggressive than what you'd see on most 26x1.95-2.1 offerings, considering those are generally in the fast-rolling XC category. I'm replacing a modern set that's dry-rotted, and naturally I am wondering whether I go modern or classic. I take it modern may be more comfortable, at the cost of having less aggressive tread -- but I very much would like to know what your opinion is.
I’ll be honest. I haven’t had chance to use this bike that much. Couldn’t really give a proper review of the tyres.
Just sold an 89' Rockhopper frame and fork.
Great. I've just sold a lamp bracket.
wait.....the BB and bottle cage bolts are painted over without any masking at all?
The BB did have the threads masked up. As for the bolts. No, unfortunately not. I replaced the one set with stainless. I’ve got a second cage to fit too I it’s stainless bolts.
Where can I buy the decal?
I think the stock headset was a Tange
That's it. My mind went completely blank.
Hey where did you get the original stickers for the frame?
Check the description for all bike specs / finding parts 😉
Great bike and very nice video! I would consider going completely tubleless and using a hollotech bb, but the bike is just renewed and wonderful
how much is the bike worth now? how much would you sell it for?
Whats the spray you used to clean the parts (headset)
Brake cleaner… in the blue and red can right?
@@MonkeyShred Cheers
Хочу купить такие наклейки. Где можно купить?
@16:57 That Ferrule does not seem to be seated fully.
Double checked and it seems good!
Nice restoration as always and no Dis. to yourself MS but the pro paint job stands out a mile. If your struggling with views maybe mix it up a bit; you haven't done a road m/c for a while and what about that belt drive you hinted at?
I tune in for the regular format of restorations.
I do have a road waiting in the wings. I just need to repair part of the paint I messed up... The BSA Twenty too. That's close on the list of things to do.
Comment
another cracking build.
I'm going to have to stop watching your videos though. they make me feel so lazy as my old Major Nichols sits in my garage waiting to be resprayed and rebuilt!!
Ha! I've had this bike since 2018 ;) I wish I could still find nice bikes for 2018 prices!
I sure hope you throw away those campagnyolooos….
I truly hope you were joking.
