This is the first RCR that made me feel my 52 years. I'm a Gen-X'r that just got his first rush of "meh" at a car. Was this how my Greatest Gen grandfather felt when the 1984 Corvette came out? He was older at the time but you get what I'm hinting at.
Is nostalgia creeping in? Am I longing to go to car shows back in the 80's and seeing all the Wampa Dampa and Winga Dinga worship? Hell, the regular cars of my youth ran from early 60's heydaze of Detroit to Malaise 80's so I'm not stuck in one era....... Whats happening to my love of all things auto?

Look, I'm only 38 and that's how I feel about most cars made after 2000. I mean, frankly, they all look the same. There was a time when I tell what a car was just by looking at a tail light. Now, I don't even care enough to pay attention to the color. The only car company that makes me somewhat "excited" are Kia and Hyundai. And that's because I've watched them grow from cheap, econo boxes to vehicles that can at least grab my attention.

"13 tech package owner ( last year they were produced ) - I love my MS3 dearly. I had never given this car any consideration until I saw one nicely modified on eBay motors. I was currently in the market for a new vehicle but was looking at several other options. I did more research, listened to exhaust clips, testimonies, reviews etc. Purchased the car sight unseen on eBay and shipped it over from Georgia. Nearly 2 years later, roughly 10k miles later, she stills drives like day 1. Have replaced tires ;) Have installed an oil catch can and PCV valve delete. New spark plugs. That is all it has required. Very reliable. Making 350hp / 380ft/lb torque. Only thing that has given me trouble on the streets was a fully built WRX making a little more HP than me. I have slept in the back on numerous occasions with the seats folded down. It is just a wonderfully unique car that always puts a smile on my face when I go for a drive. I understand there are many other cars and platforms with superior mechanical ability but the quirkiness of this car keeps me coming back :)

The Subaru’s similar tuned power rating will give an edge to the awd car that can better put that power down without being torque steered in to a ditch. I bet the MS3 is fast though. I forget how much punch my STi has sometimes, bc I typically don’t drive near redline - but when I do, I appreciate how it does so in a very controlled manner. Of course, new EVs make any acceleration claims of “king of the street” kinda mute. My neighbor’s 4,000 pound (?) Model Y performance will dust me without making a sound. I prefer my rumble.

    1. 12:59 2013 was the last model year of the MS3, not 2003.
    2. I changed my horn (as my stock one died) with 2 hella trumpets (ie not the typical front facing ones) and it now sounds like a normal car horn and is decently loud.
    3. Everyone complained about the small nav screen. For the 2013 model, they changed out the radio/head unit to one with a large screen and moved the nav to that so its easier to see.

For anyone wanting to purchase one of these cars be certain to check if the previous owner put high pressure fuel pump internals in, and if you get a 1st gen especially, be sure to check the timing chain (you can check it by taking the oil cap off and moving the chain under it to test for slack, only on the first version of the engine).
There's a lot of things that can go wrong if you modify this car without doing research. The fuel system will lean out super hard with even just a couple of bolt ons if you keep the fuel system stock. Also, if you lower the car the rear has a multi link suspension that will naturally caber out and lead to tires wearing out suuper fast. Rear camber arms are basically a necessity.
Motor mounts help the torque steer a lot, and be careful of the headlights leaking as well as an annoying issue that my 2011 speed3 has which is where the dash pulls up around the info screens.
There's this tiny little plastic clip that holds that arch over the info screen down, and if the dash gets hot enough then that little clip can bend or snap. I got my car from a dealer in Texas and brought it up to Wichita Kansas so it had this issue along with some suspension issues that didn't take too long to figure out.
Anywho this car is a blast and I highly recommend it to anyone who's willing to pay premium gas prices and babysit the car until it probably needs a new engine by like 140-160k miles.
-Lastly I think the first gens are either on their way out or perfect candidates for project cars, they go for like 6-8 grand and most of the time if the engine blows or the timing chain needs to be fixed then they just part the cars out since an engine goes for like 1.7-2.5k. With price of labor added on you can see how a lot of people see first gen as candidates to be parted out, but a talented car guy/mechanic could get 300whp+ car built for like 5-7k if you buy one with a blown engine for like 3k. The transmissions are known to be reliable so I wouldn't worry too much about that.

In comparison the happy BYENH face on the Mazdaspeed 3 was less scary to our concerned parents, so the lucky people among us with parents wealthy enough to buy their kids cars on a loan got these. my parents on the other hand understandably just wanted to buy my car outright so I got a $600 180k mile VW Passat from my dad's coworker and even though mine is also a turbo 4cyl, it's already blown up 1 engine without me trying to add more power, so I'm too scared to bite the bullet and buy a Chinese Ebay turbo kit to push more than the stock 170ish crank HP.

Did snow laps and stuff with it at a circuit during a winter. Turned sharp enough to lose tailgaters in curves and turns, was fantastic.
By the time it left for the scrap it had such bad rust holes under that it would fill up with water on rainy days causing the cluster to work intermittently. Only gears 1,2 and 5 still had teeth so driving it was sometimes rather difficult. On its final day it broke its right side CV shaft at the knuckle after hitting a pothole on the highway. It still made it the last 8km back to my house at minimum speed with the right front tire tire partially rolling dragging and screeching, leaving a trail of brake fluid behind.
The scrapyard guy turned it on to see if it worked before putting it on his truck. He turned the key and it started. Like it did every single time Id ever done it. I love all the Mazdaspeeds. I was just researching the Miatas and Proteges. I knew they weren't at the level of the speed 3 and 6. But I knew they had to be neat fun drivers. And reading into them u def could do more power to the miatas then the proteges. Although neither was built to take too much boost. But such neat cars for their times. I always wished they made a Mazdaspeed Rx8, that would've been cool too.

Hi Mr regular the little Mazdaspeed Protege had about 180 while the Gen 1 (mine) and gen 2 Mazdaspeed3 were advertised as having 265 horses and 280 torque with torque Limited in first and second gear by software. On the dyno they tended to land all over the place. I did test drive one, with the wife, a 350 horsepower one with solid engine mounts and it was bananas!

0:58 the original mazdaspeed 3 (2006) made 260 horsepower. My mom bought a 2010 Mazda3 S 2.5L in Nassau Blue, brand new in 2009 and still owns it to this day. It has had the oil changed every 4,000 miles, has had the wheel bearings replaced, all bushings, ball joints, fuel pump, A/C compressor, and 2 alternators (I think the first replacement was faulty). It has 225,000 miles on it, and still runs strong. There were some electrical issues with the A/C not turning on, the traction and stability and airbag lights coming on, and the check engine light coming on. There was a wire that had rubbed through and shorted out, and also a blown fuse. Other than that, this car has been a charm to drive and own, I really wish it had the 6 speed standard though! This is now my car, I also own a 2002 Lexus IS300 with 84,000 miles that I saved up for and bought in cash out of my own pocket in October of '21.

My first "Mazda" turbo was my 1990 Ford Probe GT, and I've had a pile of Mazdas (proper) before and after. I love this car, head unit and all (it's not as bad as the video makes it out to be). My Probe was such a handful when the boost kicked in - you had to hang on to the wheel firmly - that's when turbo FWD cars were fun.

    • @mrb692

My first car was a ‘88 MX6 GT! Basically the same car as your PGT. The turbo lag was big, but totally predictable. I remember dropping down a gear, hammering the pedal down, counting to two, and then the turbo flinging me back in my seat.
My 2014 Mazda3 2.0 is absolutely gutless in comparison to that old 2.2T

I had an 09 Speed3. It was incredibly fun value for carving mountain roads on a nice day. But that torque through the front wheels and sluggish traction control system made it impossible to drive on any type of snow or wet roads. There were times when the traction control cut it so hard that it would stall out. That on top of going through 3 engine rebuild while under warranty because of failing oil pumps (they fixed this in 2010+) made me trade it in for an Evo.

@@204audi You've got to hold the tcs button after turning it on for a few seconds (I think) to disable most of the tcs influence. Only tuned can it fully be disabled on the genpu. I drove it through a few feet of snow by the lake, up Rialto during a blizzard. With good tires they handle well if the lsd is functional. I've yet to have it stall out unless there is an issue, but the clutch is tricky (I guess, more than a gti).

In the UK (Australia and Europe too, I believe) these are called the Mazda 3 MPS. The MPS is supposed to stand for Mazda Performance Series (I like to think it stands for Multiple Penetration Suite) but most people who haven't seen or heard of it just think you mean its a Mazda 3 with a limited edition trim level or something. The name Mazdaspeed3 would have made them stand out in the minds eye.
