Matthew teaches you how to properly build a Battleforged army for Warhammer 40k 9th Edition.

Game Mat - www.gamemat.eu
The real guide:
Step 1: Buy a ton of models.
Step 2: Agonize over how many models you have to build and paint.
Step 3: Buy more models.
That’s my life right now lmao
U forgot to get a large loan from a bank
convice yourself that GRAY is THE perfect color scheme for your models
@@lovirux lol, or when you choose a colour scheme from one of the books that is largely grey and then you prime your models, then paint them back to how they looked before. :P
Step 4: Realize you don't have all the right models for your army, then buy more models
How about a video where someone puts together a detachment, showing how to use roles and spend points and buy options and all that.
This, as a 6th edition player the detachment system is very confusing for me returning to 40k. It has put me off getting back into it on 3 ocassions now.
Did you ever find a good video doing this?
@@peroxideman5292 Aupect Tactics is great, but here is a link a few in our groups liked. th-cam.com/video/6pJDV5rqIm0/w-d-xo.html
Can only agree, 5-6th ed player here, can't wait till they move away from this system. Its the worst yet so far.
Agreed... 40k has so many rules and people cover all the rules instead of just going through the steps and how the rules get applied
How to Build a 40k Army:
Step 1: Finding a Second Job
Do extra shifts ay work
@@krlitosbond if they are willing to approve overtime lol
just started 1 month ago (Used to watch my friend brothers play when we were younger and was amazed how deep the game looked to be like)... between models, paints etc... let say you dont go far with 200 canadian $$. In a way it aint a bad thing as a new player as it giving me time to really think about the way I wanna go with my army and learn how my units work.. Veterans may not remember it but trust me this game is actually a massive burden of knowledge when you first get into it
@@thebrokenmask8304 I stopped in 4th and came back in 8th and it was much easier to learn 8th/9th edition than it was to learn 3rd/4th (although there were certainly less unit options back then). Plus now there's no scatter dice, no blast templates, no "haha you only have infantry left so you can't wound my tanks" BS... it's sooooo much better now. I love it so much now that I stopped playing card and video games (MtG isn't fun and video games feel like a waste of time when I have painting to do) and now the only things I do in my free time are 40k-related.
Lmao
Not played in over a decade this feels so different
Definitely more taxtical options for sure. The biggest one for me is the changes to shooting into fighting units. Used to be you could at the risk of hitting your own men but thats not possible anymore which I think is best tbh cause some gun line armies were broken with a few meat shields
Right started back in 97 and haven't played since 5th. Armies have come and go and some many name changes.
I last played 3rd, its certainly a different beast
Same. I'm coming back after playing at the turn of 5th edition. This shit feels so awkward. I only had Tac Squads and Scouts for HQ. I don't know what happened 🥺
this has been a long time coming and really is very welcome.
Thank you very much for this. I'm someone who got into the 40k hobby less than a year ago and have been working towards my first 2000 point (8th Ed) army. I know it won't work as planned in 9th Ed, but at least now I can understand better why these units were selected and make my own informed choices later.
These are the kind of videos that make being new to this game a lot easier.
I am just watching this now and it has helped me learn a lot. I also want to thank you. You are part of the reason I chose the army i did. I chose the tyranids. The times that you play that army has showed me that they can be ran many different ways and I want to say thank you for that.
Thank you kindly for these vids starting a Grey Knight army and you guys have been instrumental in learning the game!
How to build a 40k army:
Step one. Become a Billionaire
Step 1: pick a space marine chapter whose color you like.
Step 2: start throwing cash at GW
Just started in this hobby and find it fun to paint and build how I want! Decided on a co-chapter of the raptors with my own similar paint scheme. Still don't understand alot of the ins and outs of what all i need or to play, but these videos and a buddy are helping me through that process
i'm happy when the 9th edition codexes come out and you can use the Warhammer App to have the updated rules.
What was said @13:30 is added in the errata of 13-7-20 with Knight Lances on page 106 of the Imperial Knight Codex. (also applies to Chaos of course)
‘If your Warlord has the Imperial Knights keyword, Imperial
Knights Super-heavy Detachments in your army gain the
following Command Benefits: ‘Select one of the following: +3
Command Points if your Warlord is part of this Detachment;
+6 Command Points if your Warlord is part of this Detachment
and has the Titanic keyword.’
Great video guys, I haven't created a list or fielded an army since 7th Edition, this video I found helpful just to fill the gaps and seal things up for me. Keep up the good work and I hope everyone's doing fine at MWG...
This man is a natural teacher, he's very good at sharing information through speech alone.
The best use of the auxillary support I think is to include a flyer. If you need 3 fliers you'll need 2 detachments, and i guess you could take a patrol but then you need the HQ and troop choice.
AFAIK auxiliaries don't get access to faction keywords or benefits; I can't run 3 Doom Scythes in Sautekh Dynasty to gain access to the FKNMELTALLYOURINFANTRY (forgot the real name) Stratagem if I put one of them in an auxiliary. The removal of Air Wing really sucks for Doom Scythes; I haven't really been able to get them to work in any of my 9th Ed lists at all, whereas I ran an Air Wing of them all the time in 8th.
@@Headywon Do you know where i can find that in the rulebook? I don't see it mentioned in the detachment area.
@@TheSaultiest Page 246:

Shadeling lol you’re probably closer
You and play on table tops channels got me into warhammer i just ordered my first box set i got the indomitus box cant wait for it in the mail
Succinct. I would love to see you describe unique rules that trip up new players. Excellent video you made here.
So how do Sisters of Silence work with Adeptus Custodes? Can they be brought in a Patrol Detachment or do they have to be brought in a Vanguard? Or alternatively is there a special rule for them as they are Talons of the Emperor?
I love this series for new players.
Could you please make a beginner video on what kinds of things you need when you build a list? What are some examples of roles that need to be filled and how they can be used on the table? What are the strengths to having say alot of tanks vs having alot of fast attack? Is it good to have a balance? I know this might go into tactics but I struggle with knowing what I should be putting in my list! Great videos guys, very helpful and I hope to see more in the future! It's been very welcoming and very thorough and i appreciate it. I have no idea what to add to my Idomitus box and theres a ton of options !
Well, if you have an indominus box, then you have access to space Marines and necrons. Either way, indominus only gives you one troops choice for each army, so you'll want to get 2 more troop choices. Space Marines have a ton of troop choices available, though if you're looking to be very competitive, you should stick with intercessors. Keep in mind that you can run 5 man squads of intercessors, so one box gets you all the troops you'll need.
If you're building up necrons, you only have one troop choice other than warriors (gw really favors space Marines in terms of new models) which would be Immortals. I'm not a necron player, but I believe you can run two squads of 5 immortals, which again means you only need 1 box to get there.
The reason why I'm suggesting you get 2 more troop choices is so that you can make a battalion, which is the most flexible detachment available. However, from there, you can really do whatever you want. Battalions have 3 slots for fast attack and heavy support, and 6 slots for elites. Just get models you like and want to build/paint, and you shouldn't have much trouble working them into your army.
I'm not really the best person to ask if you want to be super competitive, bit if you're just playing pickup games with your friends, this advice should serve you well. If you want to know which models are "good", I would urge you to check out 1d4 chan or reddit, as I'm sure they could help you better than I can.
Having a lot of fast attack can help with contesting and holding objectives early game whereas running a lot of tanks can help with getting a lot of firepower at the expense of pushing objectives so a balance of both is good
Loved this series! Keep coming back to it, specially when I'm not sure if I got something right.
You explained this so well! THANK YOU
I finally found a guide on list building that helped. Thanks MWG team!
I'm still confused with battle forged in match play... mainly for unaligned stuff... Like fortifications there are a lot unaligned so as they don't have my faction key word I'll get no Command points...??? as I would like at somepoint use something for my Eldar/Tau that isn't the main ones... Or adding something like Spindle drones to an army.
Great video coming back to the game after playing 2nd and 3rd as a kid. Was looking for a good explanation of detachments
Great video, made rereading the the rules make a lot more sense.
This video was perfectly concise and informative! Thank you!
Great video right noob here was wondering where do you actual go to find out the point cost of the models? I have looked in the main book and on the data sheets it just has the power level for e ample how many points its is a space marine. I have most probably missed it but cant find the point cost anywhere 🙃
Found out about the blood pact and was thinking about getting into the hobby
I entered the hobby late last year and I was collecting nids in blue with a black and yellow carapace and green eyes BUT. Then I got know no fear(great boxset) and I am sooooo happy that I did because that box let me find my calling in warhammer I am now going to collect death-guard to make display bases/dioramas/tests for my primaris and even then I may just use my current primaris army as the same thing as my death-guard and create a melee space marine army(black templars maybe)
I am really happy I got into the hobby when I did so I don't have to upgrade all of my models with primaris
Hey! Thank you for the tutorial! I have a question: So I have two models that I love and want to build a up to ~1000pt army around them. Magnus the red, and Keeper of secrets. So I am thinking about doing a supreme command detachment and a patrol detachment. My supreme command would only include Magnus, (because I can not add anything else, right?) and Keeper of secrets would be an HQ of the Patrol. I'd just buy two units of daemonettes and maybe throw in something else worth 180 pts. Would that count as a battleforged/viable army?
9:50 I know we are already at tenth, but as a 3rd edition player browsing the new rules at ninth, the way these (very core) rules were phrases confused me to no end. It was obvious what was intended, but despite the verbosity of the rules, it still left them open to the very weird interpretation that you could take almost any model with in almost any detachment a SM tactical squad within your IG army, for example. This couldn't be right... but I also heard GW wanted to make 40k army lists very "open". Why GW left this (very central) rule so open to this very general interpretation baffles me.
Thank you for clearing this up, but it still leaves me puzzled: where is this clarification written down? Or is it people just agreed to because the other interpretation is just a bit silly?
For dedicated transport could I take a razorback with a unit of intercessors? As it doesn't necessarily say that the transport has to transport the corresponding infantry unit
That is correct. You could run 4 units of intercessors and bring 4 rhinos, if you wanted to.
For each unit with the infantry keyword, you can bring 1 dedicated transport
As someone who hasn't played since 4th this video is a godsend
Thank you for this how to play video’s MWG, I just getting back in to 40k and the new rules got me confused
Check the FAQ for chaos space marines on the Warhammer community site. Sadly I don't think it does, I've really wanted to do this with mortarion but alas not been able to.
I'm new to this and have Warlord questions. 1. Are you only allowed 1 warlord per army, meaning can I have 2 detachment vs, each with a warlord? ANY model can be a warlord or does it need to be like a Sergeant?
Just 1 warlord per army with the character keyword e.g. space marine apothecary, chaos lord, ork warboss, Tyranid broodlord, necron overlord
So yes
This was fkn awsome ! Finally a video that really helped
Bois I gotta question: Can warptime be cast on a unit after a unit enters from reserve. In the movement part of core rules it doesn't forbid it.
AFAIK yes you can do that and in fact *SHOULD* do that.
The only issue I can find is possibly the way the rules for reinforcements are worded, "Reinforcement units cannot make a Normal Move, Advance, Fall Back or Remain Stationary in the *turn* they arrive for *any reason* ..." Warptime is worded "That unit can immediately move *as if it were its Movement phase* ." And the out-of-phase rules state "If such a rule explicitly mentions to do so *as if it were a different phase* than the current one, then any rules that are normally used in that phase apply..."
It is a bit vague the way they worded all of that but I still think that you can do it.
In 8th edition this was FAQ'd that a unit couldn't move at all after arriving from reserves, as far as I'm aware the intention is for this to remain the same
@@Headywon Based on that wording, I'd say you can't do that. Warptime would make it act like the Movement phase, so the Movement phase rules apply, which means you can't do anything, because the Normal Move, Advance, Fall Back and Remain Stationary actions can't be used in that turn.
New to the hobby and very confused what's a warlord can it be any model
thank you for clearing that up, epic description 🤟
So with Auxiliary Support Detachment, you are allowed to bring under strength units, does this mean that if I want to bring some Necron Warrions, but only 9 of them, when normally the squad size is 10-20 that is possible with this??
Based on what he said in the video, yes. You do give up 2 command points to do so, however
Yes
Sorry new to the game, but for the rule of three. Say for instance i want to take 6 primaris intercessors, they can't all be the same right? But if I equipped 3 one way and another 3 differently does that work? Or am I misunderstanding the whole rule lol
The rule is that you can only include the same unit 3 times per army list with the exceptions of troops e.g. assault intercessors, and dedicated transports e.g. a rhino
Question, for the dice re roll stratagem. Do you reroll all dice or just the ones you want?
That depends. If it is a roll that requires 2 dice, such as charge rolls, psychic tests, or deny the witch, you must reroll both dice. Otherwise you can only reroll one hit, wound, or saving throw.
The easiest way to remember this is that all rules are written assuming you’ll resolve attacks one at a time. If you roll 50 attacks together and then use the stratagem, you only get to reroll one of those because they are 50 individual hit rolls, not one hit roll that is 50 dice.
Oh crap! This whole time I thought you can only include the red in the detachment sheet. Now I know I can use a patrol, get my co back and put in my elites and heavy!
So I've got two questions;
1) Are custom war lords a thing? Like could I take a nob boss, call him Zimbo Grimbo, and make him my army warlord and that's like legal and viable? Or do I always have to grab Grazghul for a legal ork list?
2) When it says troop units, it means the one model, and not a squad coorrect? So my ork patrol detatch will at most have only 6 boys in it correct?
So can I have 2 primaris captains or do they have to be different like a captain and a lieutenant.
Hello, I'm fairly new to War hammer and I'm just starting to assemble my team. Can you please list how many of each squad member and what I good point limit is?
Matt greying is making me feel old. Matt you are supposed to be immortal like your necrons 😭
Do you have a video like this for crusade / narratives play?
Perhaps height gameplay, shooting from 3 story buildings, charging a 2nd story squad... and um... line of sight. Like shooting through terrain. Shooting through squads. Do weapons counts? I always get so picky with LOS.
just a question ,I'm a bit confused, at what point in time do you introduce your in the detachment in the game, is it the command phase?
Pick the Chaos Space Beastmen and never look back
Yes we have very few units. But we have everything that matters.
Spam Chaos Beastmen as your troop choice.
Use Tzeengors on flying disks as your fast attack.
Pestigors for your tanky option.
Khorngors for your elite anti-infantry choice.
And my personal favorites Slangors as your big boys.
Your opponent will surrender before the might of the beasts, knowing you are the Superior man.
Alternatively, convert a entire army of CSM into Beastmen. If you want that competitive edge.
Auxiliary detachment seems best suited for factions like Orks, who might need an extra HQ to fill out their utility.
Late to the party, my question in a battalion are the dedicated transports free ( included with the cost of the troop squads) or are they an additional cost?
Maybe a stupid question
When it says 1, does it mean one model or one group of models (squad I guess?)
It means 1 squad. Sometimes the size of the squad will be only one model, like if it's a tank or a big monster, but it usually will tell you on the unit's datasheet how many models are included in one unit.
@@aaronsilva1960 thanks! The army stuff is the most daunting and confusing part for me lol.
If I bring 2 of the same detachment am I allowed to have the max battlefield role for each detachment? i.e. can I have max 3 hq choices for each detachment? Or are you only allowed max 3 for the whole army list?
If you were running 2 patrol detachments, you could run 2 hqs in each detachment, not just throughout the army

Read page 280 under Muster Armies again. This is listed there.
@@WinterOrb Ah yeah, I was word blind between that and page 245 on detachments. Well that sucks. Rogue Traders leading armies just aren't viable, which is a shame. Just keep to open play then.

Can someone please explain to me what Battle Forged really means? I'm having some confusion with my friend.
Does every unit in every detachment need to share a Faction keyword in order for it to be battle forged? Or do you keep battle forged status if one of the detachments is unaligned?
The entire army has to share a faction keyword, and the units in any given detachment within your army must also share a faction keyword (which doesn’t have to be the same keyword being shared between detachments).
Example, I could have an army that is two Battalion detachments of Space Marines. So these two detachments will share the keyword “Adeptus Astartes” and share the “Imperium” keyword as well. But I could then have either specific Battalion detachment being their own Space Marine Chapter, ie: Ultramarines, Blood Angels, Iron Hands, etc., or I could even have both detachments being from the same Chapter. If I do that, I go from having an “Adeptus Astartes” army to being an army of a specific Space Marines Chapter, because all detachments in my army are of the same chapter.
@@Velnix21 Thank you that is very helpful. What does it mean when it says the Faction keyword in common cannot be Chaos, Imperium, Aeldary, Ynnari, or Tyranids? Does this mean if I have two detachments, one Imperial Guard and the other Space marines, that this is illegal because the only keyword they have in common is Imperium?
@@ssvishnov The "cannot be Imperium, Chaos, Tyranids, etc." rule is only for the specific detachments within your army. The detachments are allowed to share those keywords, like your example Imperial Guard and Space Marines are able to be ran as a "Imperium" army. The other thing is specifically for Space Marine Chapters, is that they have these other buffs called Doctrines that they can only use if the entire army is only Space Marines. On top of that, most of the Space Marines Chapters also have their own Chapter specific "Super Doctrines" that can only be used if the entire army is from the same specific Space Marines Chapter.
All units in your army have to share a keyword and all units must be in detachments

I mainly play daemons and this new way of building your army is not ideal for the way our codex handles detachments and the bonuses derived from them. I hope a new codex is coming soon, as mono god lists really isn't my jam :) Good video none-the-less!
I've got a friend who plays nurgle deamons and with blast rules he can't really do his usual list, I've reccomended more obscure ways i.e. Run mainly cavalry or vehicles.
The problem is that the rules in the codex gives out bonuses for detachments containing units from 1 specific god, so you can't mix and match your forces, thus you're forced to make several detachments, which will drain your cp. It's a rather big detriment to an army that is also hit hard by the blast rule and overall isn't very competitive :)
They've pretty much killed my army of mixed CSM and Chaos Renegades. No way I can make a detachment out of the Renegades.
That's a bummer

So why are points not displayed on datasheets but power is?
Is there a reason to not take a detachment of space wolves and a detachment of ultramarines?
Aside from the loss in command points for having to take 2 detachments? No. Just keep in mind that auras or stratagems from one faction won't affect the other.

I really enjoyed these videos, they have been super helpful. However, I do have one question. You say in the video "If your army is BattleForged", but you never say how to make an army BattleForged, is this something you just choose to do arbitrarily or do you have to meet some requirements to make your army BattleForged?

Play a few games borrowing some minis - most seasoned 40k players have more than 1 army. Make sure you like the game first before investing hundreds of dollars, and more importantly many hours building an army...
This. If you already know someone that plays, there's a good chance you can just play a few games with them using their armies before spending a lot of money just to find out if you like the game. Most people would be more then happy to introduce you to the game.
“It’s not as complicated as it might seem…”
