    Hey Matt, great job on all of these tutorial videos! Other detailed topics you could cover that I think would benefit people are shooting with a vehicle that has various weapons when in engagement range with an enemy unit, and movements specific to units with the fly keyword including charging, piling in, consolidating, and heroically intervening. Keep these awesome videos coming 👍

    Ok so noob question here... in the example given for unit coherency, the unit has six models. Rules state that each model in such a unit must be within two inches of two other models in that unit. The question is, if both parts of the unit were in groups of three, then wasn’t each model within two inches of two other models?

      A unit that has more than one model must be set up and finish any sort of move as a single group, with all models within 2" horizontally and 5" vertically of at least one other model from their unit
      * Unit coherency: 2" horizontally + 5" vertically.
      * Each model must be in unit coherency with one other model from own unit.
      * While unit has 6+ models, each model must be in unit coherency with 2 other models from own unit.
      So, no, you cannot split your unit into groups of three and send them on other sides of the battlefield, they need to be one coherent group linked together with no more than 2" horizontal distance.

    The problem with just going through the different phases like this is that it doesn't answer one question: What happens when a melee is not resolved in one combat phase and extends to the following combat phase? Who attacks first if nobody gets to charge?
    If I got the rule book right, it works that way that in general always the player who's turn it is not gets to attack first, but the rule that charging units always attack first overrides that default.
    Meaning if I charge somebody I hit first. If the fight is not over after one combat phase, in the other player's combat phase, I hit first again, because it is not my turn. Then in the next (the 3rd) combat phase, the other guy attacks first, because then it isn't his turn?
    None of the tutorial videos I saw so far really addresses that.

    Say assault intercessors fire their bolters at the shooting phase. Then they charge. In the fight phase I am confused about pistols. I know pistols can be used in engagement range. Intercessors have pistols and chainswords. Does this mean they can use both the chainsword and pistols in the fight phase? Or do they have to use one or the other? If they shot pistols in the shooting phase can they still shoot in the fight phase on the same turn?

    I had two questions after watching this video. 1) In the example with the fast rolling for the shooting phase, the 3 attacks are allocated to the models in the back. Is there a limit to how many attacks a model can have against it, like no more than its wounds? on the flip side could you spread them out between 3 models? 2) does every model need like of sight to shoot like just needing to be able to see 1 model to shoot at the whole unit?

    • @wicrosoft8091
      @wicrosoft8091 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      1) you can allocate hits to one model until it has taken enougth wounds to kill it e.g. if I had three attacks dealing 2 damage each, and the enemy models had 3 wounds each, then 2 attacks would be allocated to one model (assuming it had not taken any damage yet) and the final would would be allocated to a second model. When choosing where to allocate hits, you have to start with damaged models before other models so you can't just spread out the damage.
      2) Eaxch model in a shooting unit needs line of sight on at least one enemy unit in a model to shoot at that entire unit. So even if 9 models in a 10 model unit were behind a wall, and only 1 model was in the open, that unit can still be targeted (and can loose more than just 1 model from the attack).

    I have a question about the Look out, sir! rule.
    I've got a Knight with a three ranged weapons. One with 12 shots, one with 5, and another with d6.
    If there is a Necron character surrounded by 5 Necron warriors, can I declare 12 shots from one weapon on the 5 warriors, and the shots from the other weapons onto the character?
    Only taking those shots from the other two weapons if the initial 12 shots manage to reduce the Necron warriors to 2 or less of course.
    Or am I just unable to shoot that character with my knight in that same turn?

    • @miniwargaming
      @miniwargaming  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You cannot choose to target the character until there are less than 3 models in the unit next to it, and you must declare all of your targets before starting to fire, so no, that would not work.

    I'm a little confused. If you have an ability that ignores wounds. Like catalyst in your example. Your saying that if a wound does 3 damage you roll 3 dice, you don't just roll 1 dice to see if you ignore the wound outright?
    The wording of catalyat states " each time that unit loses a wound, roll a D6; on a 5+ the damage is ignored. And the unit doea not lose that wound."
    The rules seem very vague about this is this cleared up somewhere?

    • @jadkins2444
      @jadkins2444 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You roll a dice for each damage. So if it were three damage, roll three dice. Commonly referred to as a "Feel No Pain" save.

    • @davidgantenbein9362
      @davidgantenbein9362 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Codeh The term wound is very specific in the rules. You have to understand that the wounding roll does not in fact generate the wounds, it only checks if the attack does wound. This is a bit of a wording problem as the two things are not the same in the rules.
      In general it goes like this: 1.) hit roll to check if the attack hits; 2.) wound roll to check if the attack wounds = harms the target; 3.) enemy player allocates the successful attack to a model within the unit; 4.) enemy player makes a saving throw to check if the armor saves the target; 5.) inflict damage to cause wounds on the target. The conversion from damage to wounds on the target happens in 5.). Each point of damage creates one wound. Say a weapon does d3 damage, then it causes d3 wounds on the target in step 5.). As catalyst can specifically only deny wounds (not the to wound roll!) it can only be applied on the individual wounds generated in step 5.).
      Again, the problem is one of wording as the rules use a „to wound“ roll for success in harming the target and they use „wounds“ for the hit points of the models.
      So back to the resolution mechanic: the wound roll does not generate any wounds, it is only there to check if the attack is successful in wounding the target. Wounds are generated later by inflicting the weapons damage in step 5.), hence catalyst can only take place then. A wound is equal to one point of damage, not to the wounding roll of the attack.
      Yes, the confusion is mainly due to the rules using similar wording for two very different things.

  • @stax6092
    @stax6092 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am a little confused, why would you get a save and an invulnerable save if only one could be used? Wouldn't it stand to reason that the invulnerable save exists to boost the chances of a unit that has had their normal save reduced even if it isn't reduced past maximum?
    As well, how is it that only one model in a unit can be allocated wounds if that unit is being targeted? I know it's the rule, but I simply don't understand how or why that would work.
    Sorry if this all sounds really stupid, I am still green in my understanding of 40K.

    • @annorgothica7771
      @annorgothica7771 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the reason why you get a save and an invulnerable save is to give specific models more durability. Invulnerable saves are kinda rare (unless you play chaos daemons), and only the most important units have them (like HQS) or special units (Maleceptor comes to mind). if you have, Lets say, a +3 regular save with a +5 invulnerable save and get hit with an attack with 0 Armor penetration (AP), you get to choose which save to take. since the AP is 0 you would take the +3 save because its a better save then your +5 invulnerable save. if you get hit with an attack that has -3 AP, your regular save gets worse by 3 so it becomes a +6 save. In this situation it would be best to use your +5 Invulnerable save because its better then the +6 regular save.
      To answer the second question you allocate wounds to one model because every individual model in the unit has their own wounds.if you look at a models status sheet and look under the "W" it will show you how many "wounds" or "hp' that MODEL has not how many wounds that UNIT has. So, when a unit is targeted for an attack you have to allocate one wound to one model in the targeted unit removing the models that have been reduced to 0 one by one until the unit is wiped out.
      Hope this helps.

      @stax6092 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@annorgothica7771 Thank you very much, that does clarify things for me quite a bit. 🙂

    • @davidgantenbein9362
      @davidgantenbein9362 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stax On the invulnerable save: this one basically creates a minimum save the model has against attacks. Let’s look at Terminators. They have an armor save of 2+ and an invulnerable save of 5+. If they are hit by a weapon with low armor penetration (AP), then they will use their 2+ armor save and get away easy. But if they are hit by a weapon with i.e. -5 AP, their armor save is gone, now is the time to use their 5+ invulnerable save as it cannot be modified by AP at all. Hence they always have at least a 5+ against normal attacks (not against mortal wounds though as they ignore all saves).

    • @davidgantenbein9362
      @davidgantenbein9362 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stax On allocating hits to models: Matt shows here how a single attack is resolved. Each successful attack (=successful hit and wound roll) needs to be allocated to a single model in order to define saves, wound characteristics and which model will actually be removed from game. As long as this model is surviving, new attacks in the same phase need to be allocated to that model. This is important as (a) different models in a unit can have different save characteristics and (b) wounds don’t spill over. Let’s say a model has 3 wounds and the first attack inflicts 2 damage. It has now lost 2 wounds, but is still alive. The next attack has to be allocated to this model as well and let’s say it takes another 5 damage from a las-cannon. It is now dead as it had only 1 wound left, but it tanks the full 5 damage as damage does not spill over to other models in the unit.
      Please note that some damage does spill over and can harm more then one model. This is all mortal wounds damage as well as some special gear/abilities (i.e. flail of corruption).
      So to recap: successful attacks are allocated to individual models in a unit by the enemy player and all damage of that individual attack is only applied to the selected model. If the selected model dies it is removed (not another, maybe more convenient one!) and the enemy player has to select another model for the next successful attack.

    One rule explanation seems inconsistent and confuses me. (Probably my fault)
    "Unmodified Hit and wound rolls of one always miss and 6's always succeed." 5:32
    Then these examples are given that confuse me.
    Example 1: BS/WS (2+) with BS/WS (+1) effect
    Natural roll of 1, +1 effect; still a miss.
    Example 2: BS/WS (6+) with BS/WS (-1) effect
    Natural roll of 6, -1 effect; still a miss.
    I am confused by this part due to the natural roll taking priority on the first, but not the second.

      I wish we could do more battle reports, but we are limited by the time it takes to make them. Making these how to play videos does not take away from how many battle reports we can make, because I film these by myself on days when I have no one else to play against.

    Speaking of practicality - you have three models and you’re demonstrating a single die... I’m already confused at this point... so that’s three models (one unit) and just one attack for that unit?... ???

      Ok... so I just looked up the rules in the rule book. Each model makes an attack - which means one die generated per attack.
      To leave out such a crucial rule and demonstrate the wrong number of dice with the number of units here defeats the whole purpose of a “how to attack” video in the first place! It’s no wonder people get confused!
      I should just stick to reading...

      I believe Matt explains that very clearly at the start and then at 8:15 explains fast dice rolling again very clearly. You may be very new to the hobby, so get playing and you'll pick it up!

      TheAnimaster The amount of attacks is defined by the models able to attack and their stats aka the attacks they have each available. BUT each attack is resolved individually aka one by one. And that is what he is showing here, how an individual attack is resolved.
      Please note that most people roll similar attacks all at once to spare some time, but based on the rules each attack would be resolved individually.
