      Perhaps other channels think it's a risk making Vids on oddworld because it won't bring in the views. Am I wrong in thinking it is a cult classic? I was in highschool when it came out and I don't remember anyone talking about it.

      @@thegrimpeeper8865 I'd describe it as a cult classic. And you're probably right in that the others feel it wont bring in many views, but what's a small amount for them is a large amount for me, so it puts me in a good and unique position. At least that's my assessment.

    The ending comment, "there is too much of a stress on realism". I think its very true. I hope video games find a way to prove that they can be artwork again and not part of the media binge machine.

    • @hawkticus_history_corner
      @hawkticus_history_corner 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      And most "realism" isn't that anyway. So many games like to say they are, but are complete fiction anyway. They last few CoDs have all been that way. And while I like some level of grounded design, I also love when people just go crazy and have fun like Oddworld does.
      Are these designs realistic? No, but everything still looks like it's from the same planet which is great

    • @tonts5329
      @tonts5329 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I dunno, I feel like the rebooted Oddworld games kept plenty of the original aesthetics and didn't go too hyper-realistic. Such as the design of the Glukkon trains or the fancy suits the glukkons wear. The sligs and animals still look as good as ever, but with a little more variation, especially in the Slig outfits. And a lot of the nearly identical Mudokuns and Glukkons have more differences/variations in appearance, especially the named ones. I'm looking forward to seeing what the future redesigns of the other races look like, such as Munch and the Gabbits or the Vykkers, Clakkerz and Steef.

      Probably a cultural thing. Glukkons are sort of simple-minded and ego-centric, so it wouldn't be shocking if they didn't get new legs because doing so would require them acknowledging that their own are inadequate.

    • @hyenaholicproductions9033
      @hyenaholicproductions9033 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ironically it implies that at least part of the Mudokon's enslavement was down to the Mudokons themselves. Glukkons want everybody to forget that Mudokons were ever free, (because that might inspire rebellion) while Mudokons want everybody to forget that their downfall was at least partly caused by their own arrogance (because that would mean they're not 'pure'). However if it is forgotten, it will only happen again.

    Yoo Stranger's Wrath stuff coming up? Stranger's Wrath, out of all 4 titles, is still my most beloved, with its wacky Wild West-ian setting and truly colourful characters, from our protagonist to each and every outlaw we face and capture for bounty. And so, so many both cute and bizarre animals to meet, especially those we use as projectiles. Can't wait for that video to come out c:

    A very nice coverage of Oddworld's worldbuilding, and I also prefer the original games by far. I don't agree that the remakes are more realistic though, I don't think that's their problem. New 'n' Tasty had overly simplistic character models imo, and Soulstorm made the mudokons' eyes huge like a cartoon. SS did have a lot of flat desert plains like what occurs in the real world, but I actually find the original PS1 games more realistic, because they combined their very alien environments and forms with a movie-quality/lifelike sensibility

    • @davidfrancisco3502
      @davidfrancisco3502 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The "appealing to realism" that is infesting the gaming industry has turned into the excuse to gaslighting us to accept intentionally ugly designs made either due to laziness, lack of creativity or subversive & malicious ideological agendas.

    In your final thoughts, you hit the nail on the head with the lack of atmosphere in the new games. The original games still play well enough, but the reboots do control a bit slicker which is welcome. They absolutely killed the atmosphere of the originals though, it's extremely noticeable in Rupture Farms. In the original games, Rupture Farms is cold and industrial, there's occasionally the red of blood and the orange of rust, but most of the environment is grey metal and smog, with that cold green text that scrolls by on those monitors suspended from ceilings or the background. In the remakes, they went with a far warmer colour palette with lots of orange and yellow, and emphasised a greater amount of natural textures like wood in the environment. There's also a lot more lighting which is bright and warm in colour. It makes the meat plant feel inviting and cozy, which it absolutely shouldn't. It should feel unnatural and cold, not a place you want to hang around for long, and a miserable place to work for the slave workers who inhabit it. The reboot totally dropped this vibe and I cannot understand why these choices were made. Rupture farms should be bleak, not inviting.
    Despite the improvements to the controls and gameplay, I still far prefer the originals over the reboots.

    Thank you for this video! I remember playing this game as a kid on PSone. I didn’t get far. This game was too hard for me 😅
    But I LOVED atmosphere and gameplay. I didn’t know there’s been such cool lore and world building.

    I just found your channel. I was happy before when I saw you made a video on Oddworld, but then when you said “some sapient, others not so” that’s when I subscribed.
    I know that sounds weird, but I’ve always had a pet peeve about people using “sentient” to describe aliens with similar intelligence to humans when they mean “sapient”. It’s a really dumb nitpick, I know, but it always bugs me whenever it happens in Sci-fi stuff and when people discuss sci-fi creatures/races. So it’s refreshing hearing a sci-fi commentator who actually knows the difference.

    • @TheGLaDOSvideoCore
      @TheGLaDOSvideoCore 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, same. animals are sentient, humans are sapient. that's why the distinction is important in sci-fi

    Neat to know.

    I do wish you would give the newer ones a try.
    Munch's Oddysee was one of the first games I ever played,
    and Stranger's Wrath is one of my favorite underrated games of all time.
    I really wouldn't say either of those games have a "polish" either, they were both still very weird in my opinion, and not popular for the time at all.
    Their lore is so fascinating, thank you for the deep dive! Can't wait for part 2

    I used to love playing the coverdisc demos of the first two games, back in the day. My cousin had the full games and we used to stay up to 2-3 in the morning at sleepovers, working out how to get past sections.
    I wonder if those games were related to Another World and Flasback, for the Megadrive, SNES and Amiga? Those had very similar gameplay, and good worldbuilding, considering the limitations they had to work with. Maybe they are even set in another part of Oddworld?

    I totally agree with your final statement. Not enough emphasis on atmosphere and sound design nowadays. This is why I prefer Starcraft over Starcraft 2. Devs often put all their eggs on graphic fidelity and not enough on sound and music design.

    I kinda miss the old slightly visor mask.
    It made more sense for a creature with eyes on the side of its face, required to shoot a gun, to have a visor designed for front facing vision.
    The pilot masks made more shooters for the flying sligs
