    Quick tip- yarn needles make this process sooo much easier, I tie the end of the fishing line tightly to the eye of a plastic yarn needle and it just gives me a bit control and allows me to go through the moss and under roots I wouldn’t be able to as easily w my fingers. I like yarn needles for this over a regular needle bc they are blunt yet pointy so you are less likely to puncture roots instead it’ll just kinda force out of the way. I also have fumbly fingers thanks to carpal tunnel in my wrists. 🤷‍♀️☺️

    This made me think of doing this on a vintage tennis racket with the wooden protective cover.

    Fun fact about Phals; in the wild they grow hanging down from their trees; every Phal I've ever had eventually crawls out of the pot and starts falling over. It makes sense, as they're susceptible to crown rot (so never leave water in the crown). So Nick, when they do start leaning, you can just flip the whole frame upside down! 🙃Thanks for the fun video!

    I agree with Eka Marie! Yarn needles make it easier to go through the moss and the slots.

    Go to the craft store and buy a yarn needle. It’d make it super easy to weave the fishing line through

    Those are lovely! Could you show how you hang them in a future video? I purchased a slat mount after your video last year and never used it because I'm thoroughly confused about the hanging process. I thought they should hang from those coils but they're at a weird angle. Thanks. Great video :)

    Nick, this is just beautiful. I didn't know repotme had them and I have been a customer with them for 3 to 4 years I think. Lol. I have quite a collection mini orchids to this and some air plants. Nice job.

    have you used darning needles to help wrap the moss before? wondering if that will be easier?

    This makes me want to get my first orchid. I don't think you used the slat mount backward. The metal loops might keep it suspended off the wall to prevent moisture damage from having damp wood sitting against it after watering. Are there plants other than orchids and air plants that could benefit from this display?

    • @Korina42
      @Korina42 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably any epiphite that likes your conditions would work. And I totally agree about the loops.

    • @MaridanValor

      @@Korina42 I might have to try something with some Rhipsalis when I repot mine.

    That fishing line really did look a bit too thick for this project, but I'm sure it also made it easier to weave in through the roots because it acted more like a needle. Someone mentioned using a yarn needle to help thread through the moss, but maybe a toothpick taped to the end of the fishing line would work and be much cheaper (and easier to find without having to go to a specialty store to find a yarn needle.)
    I have a few larger (~4" pot) orchids that I'm trying to get to rebloom again, and I've been debating whether I should try to mount my most promising one on a frame like this just to have something different to look at. Now that I've seen how to do it, those wheels are churning in my head even faster! Thanks, Nick! Now maybe I won't have to go check out the Orchid display at Longwood next month for inspiration (but I still probably will anyway lol)

    This also works really cool w the watermelon pelleronia, I used a longer board and placed it at the bottom and it’s almost shingling like a dubia all over the board.
    This is kind of inspiring my to do this and add my jewel orchids. Like a background of jewel orchids around a flowering type and the random tiny lil air plant or 2 for texture. That way when the bigger orchid isn’t flowering you still get the color pop from the jewel orchids, I bet if they all flowered it’d look soo pretty. The tiny lil jewel orchid flowers w the typical large orchid flowers, could you imagine the air plants flowering w em too 😂😂 color explosion!

    I'd like to see how to water these. It's probably the only way I'll ever be able to keep air plants because my cat will never leave them alone when I display them on a shelf or counter. Same with the spider plants! She doesn't bother the others though. I don't know what it is about those two, but I've tried several times to have both, and she's just not having it! 🙄

    • @WhimsicalXay
      @WhimsicalXay ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Spider plants are a little hallucinogenic, like catnip, which is why some cats are attracted to them. Eating too much of it can cause upset stomach, even though spider plants are listed as non-toxic according to the ASPCA. I don't know if air plants have the same effects. Maybe cats like the air plants dangly leaves (another reason they may also go for spider plants).
