I love getting rid of clutter and things that just don't bring joy, good for you! My motto is, "life is too short to wear an itchy sweater" and this is the perfect representation of that :)
This was the video we needed! Love how it was filmed and edited. Not to mention everyone needs to be reminded it’s ok to throw plants away! Plant keeping is about enjoyment not stress!
I’m so glad you said this! I live out in rural Illinois, 45 minutes from anything. Any time I’ve had plants to sell or give away on Facebook, people don’t want to come out here! I’ve even said, like, “come to this Walmart at 1pm if you want these plants” and still people say, “oh but can you come meet me here Tuesday at 5pm?” Etc. like nooo I can not spend $125 in gas to run crappy $5 plants all over the countryside. Lol! Sometimes it’s more sustainable to throw them out.
I agree. I take to work and leave in the break room. They go quickly. It’s quit a workout to walk with plants and a lunch bag. Just glad someone else will be happy.🪴💚
I have people meet me in a store parking lot, not only to save gas $ but for safety reasons. Plant people or not, it's safer to meet in a public and busy parking lot than someone's private home.
The side camera, very nice little detail you've added for that bit of Nick spice we love! Your energy is contagious, I'll be carrying it with me through the day. What a great video ❤
I gave away 150 healthy beautiful plants last year, babies, doubles, plants that just didn't make my heart sing any longer - Now it's go time, I'm chucking what ever is left that doesn't make me smile or is giving me problems. I need to help the landfill trash decompose with more organic materials! 😘
Thank you for sharing this. I have a bunch of plants waiting for me to finally let them go and I’ve been avoiding it because of guilt. Gonna tackle this today!
Thoroughly enjoyed this video. I'm doing the same thing with my plant collection and feel good about it. In the past I've always felt sad and guilty throwing away my babies. I am able to compost mine so that makes it a little easier. I can't for the life of me grow philodendrens of any kind so today out they go! Last summer I got rid of half of my hoya collection due to mealy bug infestation. I fought the good battle for 3 years and surrendered. It's very freeing to get rid of the ones that don't bring you joy. Thanks for making me feel better about purging. Love your sense of humor!
You have motivated me to look through my plants today to purge those sad, half dead ones as well as those that just don’t excite me anymore. I like the idea of having fewer plants that I will give better care to and appreciate more. Happy New Year!
Crotons have to be the worst plant to have indoors. I took one in when a friend was going to compost it. It looked stupid and leggy, but I held onto it for over a year out of guilt. Finally threw it out after it got spider mites for the third time.
Sometimes after throwing away a plant, I feel bad about it but after two days I’ve already forgotten it. Lol. I guess I wasn’t as attached as I thought.
I've been downsizing as well as focusing on the plants that bring me joy. Dracaena + snake plants, oxalis, kalanchoe, aglaonema Siam Red, and orchids bring me the most joy. I spend most of my time in my bedroom, so it's filled with blooming orchids, my biggest snake plant bloomed 2x in 2023, and my Ishida have been in bloom nonstop for a year. I also have my indoor tomato plant that is over a year old and has never stopped producing new leaves and fruit. Purging is hard, but it does open up space and planters.
Gurl yasssss!! Saying the stuff no one else admits to! I've been getting rid of stuff that depresses me or makes me anxious, asking the same questions you're asking, "does this spark joy?". No, it makes me sad and anxious and I just don't need that. Thank you so much for making this video!
Yay! So I'm not the only one with dying & dead plants. I think we hang on to them for so long because we feel bad that they died or are dying in our care. We keep hoping to perform a miracle and bring them back to life, but it never happens. I have learned that when a plant doesn't make me smile anymore it has got to go. That just leaves room for those that do. Thank you for this video! You have my upmost respect for your honesty. To be truthful, others need to know that some plants are going to thrive, and some are going to perish. You just deal with it cause you love plants. Anytime you deal with any living thing you take the good with the bad. No matter what profession you're in. Doctor, farmer, and so on. You can't let the sadness take away the joy of loving what you do. It's that simple!
I hear you, Nick! My plants know that they thrive/survive or they're off to the composter. Fussy plants don't even get a three strikes grace in my house. Happy New Year!
I threw away my staghorn fern and a goldfish plant after finding them infected with scale. I could have treated them but now that I have a little kiddo it's too much for me right now. It made me sad throwing them out but your video made me feel better.
I have had to do this and even though it’s hard I felt better afterwards. And it’s not always that easy to find people to take every frikin plant you need to get rid of. Especially when you need them to go away immediately for your mental health. I think the plant community needs to be more accepting in general.
I have a spot in my yard called survivor Island where I out all my plants that wither aren't making it no mater what. Some are still here some aren't and got voted off. 😅
1. I've had this dead begonia for 5 years. 2. Mealybugs ... eww. 3. Charlie Brown's Philodendron. 4. More dead plants and Thrips (eww ...). 5. Spider Mites ... eww. 6. No cursed plants. 7. Thank you! I really struggle with this. There was one plant I just hated, but instead of tossing it, I snipped it into 4 cuttings and put them in water. And guess what…I ended up with 4 rooted cuttings I hated!
It's a challenge, a point of pride for me to provide the best conditions possible to get a plant to thrive but sometimes no matter how hard you try you fail. It happens to the best of us. I for one appreciate your honesty.
I've thrown out plants that have severe scale and mealy bug infestations. 1 to stop the spread to my other plants, and 2 because I don't have the space to isolate them. I usually chuck them into the green wheelie bin for compost.
OMG, I literally just posted this same sentiment this morning and your video came up in my feed. Confirmation. I'm convinced there is universal energy of empowerment to purge the things that are not serving you well. I always enjoy your videos. Happy New Year.
Absolutely LOVED your video. Missed Nick’s when he posted, but caught yours. It is definitely this year’s energy to purge stress. Thanks for your support, Nick & Yvette!
I never feel guilty purging whether its plants, clothes, shoes, my own drawings anything. Part of having peace in my life is to make life easier. I am definitely not someone that goes out of their way to do anything. Thanks for this video. 😅
Thank you, I have also being feeling stress about a few of my plants and now I think I will purge them instead of trying to find another home for them.
This is giving me life!!!! Best thing I've seen in a long time. Always struggling to get rid of nearly dead or no longer-in-love plants is so affecting my mental health. Not worth the struggle. Thanks thanks thanks for this content. Just brilliant!!!
I fully support this. I'm no nursemaid. A plant must be in pristine condition to enter my home. I don't "save" plants. And while they're in my care and get sick or have trouble, I do tend to them and change what needs changing. But if they insist on being struggle, they're gone. And I'm not rehoming them to someone else to have to struggle with or to infest a new home. And YES no matter where a plant goes (even a landfill) it will break down organically so there's no ethical issue about that. Reuse the plastic planter or recycle. That's my take. ❤
I am absolutely loving this type of video. I don’t understand why ppl are upset about purging plants we fall out of love with our clothes, bags shoes even our partners 😅 I went through a crazy phase of succulents addiction now I don’t even want one near me 😂
I’ve started doing the same! I often take cuttings (if there is anything viable) but I don’t hang on to strugglers as long as I used to. Thank you for showing even the professionals have struggles!!
Loving the new camera angles and how upbeat the video is. Yes, it is absolutely therapeutic to purge all your dead/dying plants to make space for healthy ones 😊
I literally gave more than half my plants away, the ones folks didn’t want I threw out. I have less than 60 now and feel so FREE! CONGRATS on doing it!
I just got rid of a few Alocasias that had spidermites and they kept coming back... I just got so tired of the constant battle and the leaves were starting to look very sad. It felt so good afterwards, like a breath of fresh air, and I collected lots of corms!
I LOVE THIS ❤️ I had a begonia that I struggled with for far longer than was good for my mental health, and when I finally decided to just chuck it in the trash, the giant rush of relief I felt for finally getting rid of it was unbelievable 😊😊😊. If it's more trouble than it's worth...trash it! Thank you!
This was new way of filming/editing, is cracking me up! Love it! I also love how calm you are about a pest infestation. I would be freaking out from mealy bugs or spider mites. Not you, just cool, calm and collected. Another great video Nick 👍🏽
This was an awesome video! I love a good purge of anything!! Its very therapeutic! And i for sure have some plants that no longer bring me joy and should meet the trash!! I felt the weight lift off your shoulders in this video!! Love it!❤
Sweat away king! Of course we don't notice and if we did whomever has nothing nice to say should keep their mouth shut. You're amazing and deserve nothing but joy and kindness! Great video.
I have the 3x rule too! If I can’t keep it alive, try to salvage it, I’ll buy another if I really like it. But if that one dies I’m done with it. And trying to reroot it helps slow me down from impulse buying.
I agree, I do it. No plant is worth keeping if I have to pamper it. A friend of mine had over 100 beautiful plants and was downsizing to a warmer climate a couple thousand miles away. She placed all her plants outside knowing that it was going to be way below freezing at night and told them goodbye. A few days later she put all of them in the trash and put the pots at the curb to give away.
Love this. I just tossed a pilea and it's daughter over the bank just because they grew weird, dropping leaves constantly, and I felt really good about it. Go Nick! Don't feel like you need to justify anything!
This video was fun to watch. You were a riot! Glad you did what you wanted to do and not worry about others criticizing! Thanks for always showing all sides to plant care, and that sometimes you just are done with some…
Love the purge! Recently did the same and it felt so good...even freed up a few Berg pots as well. How about as a followup video tell us your current favs and the ones that are least susceptible to pests. Simplifying my plant collection brought me joy!
I love the motivation given with the beginning dialogue (Instant subscription lol) And cleaning out old plants to make room for the new ones for the new year!! Thanks so much and Keep planting!!! 🙌🍃🪴🙏🌱
Nick I'm traumatized. 😅 I purge plants, just not all at once like that. I'm glad you've eased your stress and can now enjoy the plants that you're loving on. 💚😊
I have a few plants waiting for people to pick up. One friend keeps saying I will be over soon. Not seen them in well over a year hehe. But I don't feel bad for for getting rid of plants if they don't do well. But my rule tends to be one strike and never again. You look way more chilled after each plant. It was nice to see
It can be frustrating, I had the same issue with people saying yes yes yes I want that it's mine don't give it to anyone else.. and then they never pick them up!
@meganwalker27 It really is a pain. I'd have so much room for new plants for me if they would just come get them!!! So glad it's not just me. Thank you
Happy for you Nick, must feel great when you look around now. Love your energy. Hope 2024 bring you good health and happiness. Can’t wait to see your next videos
I get into that situation too. My plants are in the garden. (My climate allows that and my house conditions are not suited - too dark when everyone is out and there is a load of furniture). My garden often looks cluttered if I'm not planning ahead of time where to put plants to be salvaged. Often plants remain in limbo long enough to say "Enough with all that clutter". Most of the time the garden looks fine, with the exception of few pots which lay in "temporary" locations on a permanent basis.
I usually skip your videos but now I won’t, you’re so funny and relatable. Thank you for the content, much appreciated. Sad seeing that gloriosum go in the trash
Love this. I have a croton stalk and 2 dracaenas that I keep telling, "Just die already." On the other hand, I have a pretty 2 inch pot with a with a winy green "string" and a small flattened pearl that I keep spritzing on occasion to see if my pearls will return. It doesn't take up much room and I find joy in the hope. LOL. Fun video, Nick.
Thanks so much for saying what we all needed to hear!! That said for plants with insect issues even pretty bad issues, neem oil works really well!for getting rid of them! You always make me laugh bc what you say is true! 😂
Nick I loved this so much. What you have done is reminded us all that it's ok to get rid of a plant if it's gone without feeling guilty about it. Thank you
What a great way to start the new year, Nick! Out with the old and tired. You are an inspiration. I use one of those same "decision-makers" when I toss out plants. If I can get a new one if I really want it, it's readily available, etc. then I don't feel as bad throwing it away. Sometimes it just has to be done!
You know the same way I decide to throw out a lipstick is the same way I toss a plant. Holy Hoya h*ll that was like a space cruiser of Mealy's that was a Happy Mealy bug meal of a plant minus the toy. I had this moment myself in Nov. where I threw out 6 plants that just hated the conditions of my home. This video made me laugh :)
I absolutely love this! I'm so happy to see I'm not the only one that's over their philos. They don't make me happy looking at them, and nothing I do makes them happy.
Heya Nick. Here's to the New Year. May she be better than 2023! My depression finally got to a point it affected my collection. I'm giving a bunch away and selling some. I feel bad as I lost some, but such is life..doing my best. Thanks for a great video!
As I'm watching I'm looking at my plants saying who can I combine and who can I get rid of and who has pests. Ty Nick. I do feel guilty when a plant has unloved itself but it is life and just learn from the experience and either try again or don't. I think that's why majority of what I have is snake plants, variety of pothos and spider plants and orchids and monsters delicious and string of turtles and a micans. It's a lot to remember who needs what and when. Now that I mention it. I should write it done. Time to journal in the plant book.😊 Happy new year!!!!
Highly entertaining and thankful for the reason behind each plant purge; also unprompted medical advice: excessive sweating is often a sign of vitamin D deficiency I recommend you get some blood work done; I had this same issue in the past and since learning about the deficiency ( and dr recommended ) taking a daily supplement I feel a lot better… anyways, happy growing!
I'm about to do this! Also a thing no one talks about it's incredibly difficult to get rid of dirt in the city vs having a big yard to just dump. We had to dig up 6x20 plot in our yard when we moved in because the previous owners never walked their two giant dogs so the soil was urine soaked/nothing grew and it smelled like urea. I had 3 trash cans full, like hundreds of pounds. We had to rent a truck and take to a friend's house in the burbs because it would take years to toss via garbage bags
I started slowly purging last fall. I can't wait for warm weather so I can get in my greenhouse and get rid of some more! At 70, I can no longer deal with pampering and coddling uncooperative plants...or people, but that's a story for another day. 😂 My new goal is to have only the easy-care plants that work for me: orchids, hoyas, and sansevierias.
“If this does upset you, I’m sorry, feel free to leave a mean comment, I really don’t care.” Thank you Nick for my new motto for 2024. 👏🏼

I hadn’t tried fb. Why is it so hard to give plants away?
Yes! Too much stress AND gas 😪
I have people meet me in a store parking lot, not only to save gas $ but for safety reasons. Plant people or not, it's safer to meet in a public and busy parking lot than someone's private home.
This was so theraputic, Nick. thank you for giving me the courage to purge the sick plants!🥰🥰

Thank for sharing makes me feel better about the plants I have struggled with and lost
Of course! 😄🪴
This was an awesome video! I love a good purge of anything!! Its very therapeutic! And i for sure have some plants that no longer bring me joy and should meet the trash!!
I felt the weight lift off your shoulders in this video!! Love it!❤
Thanks so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed 😄 Toss those sad plants!!
Love this video-and the message! Clear out the dying plants and not feel guilty. Thanks, Nick!
Of course! Thanks for watching! 😄
Sweat away king! Of course we don't notice and if we did whomever has nothing nice to say should keep their mouth shut. You're amazing and deserve nothing but joy and kindness! Great video.
🤣💦 Lolll thanks!!
Thanks Nick, what a relief for you. I've done this now and then and it can be a renewal of the collection and ourselves. Happy New Year 2024!
Happy new year!
I have the 3x rule too! If I can’t keep it alive, try to salvage it, I’ll buy another if I really like it. But if that one dies I’m done with it. And trying to reroot it helps slow me down from impulse buying.
A few plants have even made it on to their fourth or fifth attempt.... which obviously never goes according to plan 😂
Thanks for always showing all sides to plant care, and that sometimes you just are done with some…
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed ! 😄
Love the purge! Recently did the same and it felt so good...even freed up a few Berg pots as well. How about as a followup video tell us your current favs and the ones that are least susceptible to pests. Simplifying my plant collection brought me joy!
I definitely want to make a video about plants that I find to be the most pest-free!
I love everything about this video, you can literally make anything entertaining 😂 Thanks for making me feel better about purging my plants! 😊
This made me really happy to read 🥹 I'm so glad!
@@NickPileggiPlants Awesome! 😄
I love the motivation given with the beginning dialogue (Instant subscription lol)
And cleaning out old plants to make room for the new ones for the new year!!
Thanks so much and Keep planting!!! 🙌🍃🪴🙏🌱
Nick I'm traumatized. 😅 I purge plants, just not all at once like that. I'm glad you've eased your stress and can now enjoy the plants that you're loving on. 💚😊
🤣🤣
Love this video. I don’t feel bad when a purge needs to happen with plants. Working on my own purging. Thanks for sharing
Thanks! 🪴💚
Thank you
One strike, dang! Not wasting any time here 😂 Plants, watch out with this one! 😝
Wonderful!!!
Best thing to do occasionally.
Goodbye plants that were diseased.😊
Totally agree! 🪴
Happy for you Nick, must feel great when you look around now. Love your energy. Hope 2024 bring you good health and happiness. Can’t wait to see your next videos
Thank you! 🥹 Lots more videos to come!
Best video ever!!!! You gave us all the guts to get rid of plants that aren’t bringing us joy or just stop trying to save them. Thank you!!!
Thanks for using my music! 🥰rest in peace plants
Oh I'm familiar with the permanent "temporary" 😂😂
One of your best videos! I love how real you were and you recorded it, the rest of us do the same thing but don’t tell anyone 😂
Aw thank you! 🥲💚
Do you spray the neem oil on the plant or water the plant with neem oil diluted in water?
Happy 2024! 💚💚💚🪴🪴🪴
ummm i can't stop staring at that absolutely GORGEOUS HARP you have behind you!!!! BEAUTIFUL
Thanks! She is purdy 🤗 and fun to play!
aww loved the double camera angle! this was fun :)
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed!
Nick I loved this so much. What you have done is reminded us all that it's ok to get rid of a plant if it's gone without feeling guilty about it. Thank you
Thanks! I'm glad to hear
Happy New Year, Nick 🎊✨️🙏💖 I wish you continued success in 2024!
Thank you! Happy new year!
Great video! If it doesn’t bring you joy, toss it!
Exactly!
Absolutely! Thanks for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed 🤗
😂😂 plant purge, so needed that. Happy New Year🎉🎉
Happy new year!
This video made me laugh :)
happy mealy bug meal... that's at least 1200 calories of mealy bug 😮😂
Best wishes to you this year!
I think lots of us can relate there. Wishing you a happy 2024! Remember the plant community always has your back 😉
Watching you get rid of plants that are not making it gives me strength to do the same without guilt!
I'm glad to hear!!
No need to feel guilty, but I fully understand that! It can be hard to get rid of them sometimes. Happy new year 🪴
Highly entertaining and thankful for the reason behind each plant purge; also unprompted medical advice: excessive sweating is often a sign of vitamin D deficiency I recommend you get some blood work done; I had this same issue in the past and since learning about the deficiency ( and dr recommended ) taking a daily supplement I feel a lot better… anyways, happy growing!
Love this ❤️ we all need to purge once in a while. Its very therapeutic
Always send my purges off with a quick “mmm…bye bye….so sorry dear…thanks for coming to my party “
Thanks Nick ❤
Lmaooo I love that 😂💅🏻
I started slowly purging last fall.
Ha, I did this! I’m over trying to keep some plants alive! Lots of work. Ha.
Right?! It's too much sometimes 😪
I just discovered you today Nick and I love your attitude! My house my plants go kick rocks!
Hahaha thanks for joining! 😄🪴
