As a potrait artist for 40 yrs I can tell you that your process is your own. Do it how you want to. There is no right or wrong. I love the finished piece. Absolutely beautiful. Keep up the great work.
10:13 “I’m learning to be much kinder to myself and I’m becoming kinder to other people. I’m not comparing myself to others.” Exactly! Love it. I’m not an artist but I happened to see this TH-cam as I was searching around this morning for something interesting to watch. You have a beautiful attitude and your artwork is spectacular.
I've known a lot of quietly courageous people in my life (I'm 66). From soldiers and sailors to physicians who have literally held someone's life in their hands. I sometimes wonder whether artists are in some ways the bravest of them all. Every original artwork is a first time experience; by definition no one has ever done that before. So every time you step up to a clean canvas (or a blank page or an empty screen in your word processor,) you are starting over. In a very real sense you don't know what you are doing but you have a faith that you'll figure it out as you go. It takes a lot of courage (and some madness,) to do that over and over again, knowing all that and also knowing that your final intent is to show it to the world. There's a lot which is admirable in that and for what little it means from me, I admire your willingness to step once more into the breach. Congratulations on a fine portrait! It's time to start getting ready for next year's competition. Have you thought about a subject yet?
wonderful said... you kind of helped me break my creative block with these words. IT IS OKAY NOT TO KNOW WHAT WE ARE DOING BECAUSE IT IS ALWAYS A FIRST TRY =)
@@jadedjhypsi those individual whom get drunk or drugged and they get out of their minds and they do unbelievable things deal with problems that you can observe and say "they don't know what they are doing" an "artist" knows what they are doing and that's exactly the reason of those unexpected things that happen at the end! It is not always a first try; you are walking through a path as an artist and you "must" learn from the "path" good luck!
Hi Carly, For having a short painting career - your skill is fantastic! The one thing, I’d recommend for your figural compositions to become more life-like and hold a real visual weight, is work with a live model vs. referencing the image from your IPad or what have you. Doing this will give your figures; substance and a feeling of being grounded vs floating away and angelic-like. Keep going and looking forward to see your next creations! You got this!!❤ PS. Don’t be shy, on painting feet as they are just as important as the face! 😊 Yes, I’m an old master painter.
Gorgeous work. Thank you for sharing your months-long adventure. Your model is lovely and your loving attention to represent her brings more beauty to the world.
I truly APPRECIATE your genuine integrity about your process and you sharing it with us fellow artists! It takes a lot of GUTS to share your process knowing that each step is not your best work, but by sharing it we get to see a future master artist in the making!!!!!!! Continued success in your amazing journey of creativity!
I must admit that watercolours are my personal favorite but this truly is a work that you can be very proud of, it really is quite beautiful - thank you.
The destination almost becomes irrelevant in a journey of awakening and self discovery as challenging and wholesome as the one you shared here. It no doubt helps when the finished product is beautiful too. Well done Carly!
WHAT?! Your artwork completely blew that winning piece out of the water!! The judges were blind, BLIND I tell you!! I'm declaring shenanigans!! But seriously - that's an amazing portrait. Well done!! It's so easy for us viewers to watch you work and think "oh she knows EXACTLY what she's doing" never realizing the emotional roller coaster you were on while working on that piece. But that's what I sooo love about you and your channel, you're not afraid to show us and/or discuss with us your entire process, the good and the not-so-good. Well you may be afraid but you do it anyways. I'm truly fascinated by it all and grateful that you're letting us see more of your process. Thank you so much! Your videos are so relaxing and interesting and I can't get enough!!
I think your painting of Vera Blue is gorgeous and personally feel it should have been the winner. Not only was her skin, hair etc well done but I could almost feel the chiffon!✨👏🏻
I'll never understand art. When you look at some of the winners' art and then look at this, I think to myself, "How can it be". No disrespect to the other artists or children starting but some look like a very young child beginning has drawn them with no professionalism whatsoever.
Beautiful, beautiful work. I have recently started painting and watching many videos of people’s work. I am in awe when I see people’s work and I am so impressed. I feel such a peaceful vibe in your work. Beautiful!
I'm certain Angus has already told you: No artist embarks on a brand new work without feelings of trepidation. I've done many pieces (I'm 71) and each time I reach places where I just have to push past the fear and persevere. One instructor told me that from the first mark you make, the rest is a controlled accident. You did it brilliantly!
Truly beautiful piece of work , im glad you got through the other side of your confidence crisis Your an amazing artist, The portrait should always stay with you , it's your inspiration, and will be over the amount of years your going to be creating your pieces , great job ! ❤.
I feel like you have been able to pull back the veil and lift this beautiful woman out of another dimension. Imagine if you had loved and lost someone like this, but still had this sublime image as your ongoing connection. There could be no greater gift!
Just here to show my appreciaton. What I saw from your process... it impressed and inspired me. What struck me the most... the inextricable togetherness of subject matter and muse. In your case it is very clear, but what, to me at least, is also clear that your commitment to those... man... you've grown! The powerful and at the same time delicate manner you render your subject... the love, the dedication... the desire, yearning maybe... to penetrate the essence of your subject... All that. I've never saw such beautiful paintings as yours. I really do respect your commitment to your art.
If you could make longer videos like this, that would be great . It is no exaggeration that you will be known, when all is said and done years from now, the great artist of our time.
Congratulations! You did an amazing job on this portrait. Kudos to you for sticking with it and working through your failures and turning them into successes. Learning to Persevere is a skill we all need to work on if we want to be successful at whatever we hope to achieve. Winners generally fail more often than they succeed. But it is the people who persevere, that ultimately turn their many failures into their greatest achievements.
Such a powerful and moving story behind this artwork! 🎨✨ I’m truly inspired by your journey and the dedication you put into painting Vera Blue for the Archibald Prize. Your passion and perseverance shine through in every brushstroke. Thank you for sharing this incredible experience with us-looking forward to seeing more of your work in the future! 🌟👏
Your work ethic and determination is amazing and will continue to make you even more successful! Please keep giving video updates of your artistic progress.
Absolutely stunning. The emotions I felt when you discussed transitioning from the comfort of a pencil to the vibrancy of paint were indescribable. I've been self-teaching myself to paint for years now, primarily focusing on watercolors as a pencil and pen artist. Working with color has been incredibly challenging, and hearing you talk about the frustrations of color theory, how it shifts on the canvas/paper, and reacts to surrounding colors, almost brought tears to my eyes. Your progress is truly remarkable, and it's reassuring to know that struggles lead to growth. I've made a conscious effort to keep even my less polished work, using it as a visual diary to track my development. Your journey is inspiring, and your artistic endeavors are truly invaluable.
Literally painting yourself elbow, face, etc.) should be part of the fun, pleasure of painting. It is inspirational for more inexperienced artists to see artists like you show their studies-pieces they have worked on, struggled with and made many mistakes on.
As is usual in your videos, this is an excellent work, a most inspiring and a very beautiful insight into your processes. Absolutely inspiring, thank you!
This took my breath away…….. You are incredibly talented. I used to paint years ago ( started as a child) I have been feeling the itch to start back, but I am so nervous. I know it’s like starting over. You give me the inspiration to try.
I came across your video and I couldn’t stop watching you and how you grew through this… You’re amazing….. A fan of yours….. Receiving a gift that you have should be shared….
Great peice of work, Carly. Really respect your perseverance on your journey to complete this artwork. We can all, as artists, learn from your example.
Thankyou for sharing your process, I’ve been following your beautiful charcoal journey and watching you develop is incredible and inspiring. Your hard work is definitely paying off, your love shows in your work ❤
Oh wow Carly it’s amazing, I don’t know the model musician but oh my gosh it’s beautiful you should be so happy another successful masterpiece. You don’t know how much you have inspired me over the last couple of years. I’m 65 now and started drawing/charcoal/watercolour/acrylic painting two years ago just because I watched some of your many amazing post on YT, I try to do a piece once a week more if I can and my ability is getting better and better, thank you so much please keep going never give up❤
Was so excited for you as you talked us through your journey of self taught Artist ! Wow and wow… what a beautiful piece ❤ thank you for sharing your story and inspiring us newbies ❤
A gorgeous work of art by a gorgeous artist. The effort and emotion you put into this piece is evident and your dedication comes through in a truly stunning way. I will definitely follow your future compositions.
The universe has guided me to you to inspire me in my own process. . 👉YOU 👈are such an inspiration! Thank you so much for sharing the vulnerabilities , process., and most of all your courage. 🙏🙌
oh my gosh i love it, i love your work. I am a beginner and i love watching your videos. You inspire me so much to pick up my pencil and paint brush every day. Thank you so much for showing your work. ^_^
The painting came out beautifully. I think you gained so much more than the prize as it pushed you out of your comfort zone and gave you the opportunity to create something that you might not have done without this specific goal. Thank you for sharing your process to as it is good for other artists to see that even those with a lot of experience still struggle with anxiety and stress about their work.
As a fellow self-taught artist, gosh you're so skilled. Your art has such a special elegance to it. If I ever had the opportunity to study oil painting under your guidance for even 2 hours, that would be a true treat.

Being an accomplished draftsman with either charcoal or graphite is an essential tool to becoming a painter. I like that the next step you took was to paint a monochromatic study. This is very much InLine with the old masters technique. they first did a drawing, and then a Monic O-Matic study and paint, and then filled in with color. This then was called a cartoon. this enabled the artist to work on composition, shading, and establishing your color palette. Good job. My hat is off to your mentor.

RELAX. BREATHE. You ARE supremely talented; the artistic struggle is real- and necessary I think. Because in the end, the RESULT is worth it. Your stuff is gorgeous- and your mentor be damned, so are you. 😂
Absolutely incredible! So interesting to watch and listen as you have taken us through your thought process, your insecurities that I'm sure all of us have had with our own creative process, and to see the final result...just spectacular! Has Vera seen this? I'm curious about her reaction! I'm sure she would be overwhelmed!
Lots of hard comments, but they're a positive thing. Why paint, i.m.o.? You can get color with pastels, fix them, go over them...The only thing about pastel color is contrast, extreme darks & lights after fixative hits them. A good colored pencil over the pastels will give you that. Some of our oldest pieces of art that have survived are drawings! Dont think they dont hold comparative value to paintings, a good piece will demand price for the quality. & detailing the whole piece isn't always necessary. Look at j.s. sergeants portraits, the face, or other important focal points are only done in detail. The rest is put in loosely. Painting is fine..but do what you feel comfortable with. That way theres no stress about it. I've seen studies for paintings...drawn, and then paint was put here & there around the drawing. To me, they were beautiful! What youd think was unfinished, neither here nor there..were just striking images.
Such an impressive piece Carly and seeing all the video footage/work leading up to it was so interesting. I must try that Italian Pink in my own mixes. Anyway, the Archy can wait but you're definitely finalist material!
Fantastic documentation of the journey. I'm still too scared to try oils but I get the feeling it would be so much better when trying to blend colours etc. I have seen people put a neutral colour on their palettes to help with determining "true" colour value... not sure if that would be useful? The monochrome was lovely... but I do have to agree the colour just brought so much more warmth and life into it. Well done!
I love the detailing of your process. 15-16 studies? why not... get comfy with the work, the method... awesome. not fun watching you make yourself sick with anxiety getting through this... thirty years from now, after dozens of other amazing works, you will be able to look back on this and see it as the judging committee saw it, and still be proud of it. your critical eye will evolve, but so to will your rationale for pride. Look forward to more colour work. the algorithm brought you because just discovering Vera Blue's music. gonna subscribe for the artist Carly
As a potrait artist for 40 yrs I can tell you that your process is your own. Do it how you want to. There is no right or wrong. I love the finished piece. Absolutely beautiful. Keep up the great work.
Exactly, and by learning this way, you decide your style, either by accident, subconsciously or choice through the journey.
I like that style of advice, that is wisdom 😀

Bravo Carly! Persistence is the key element in achieving success.
Very nice of you to share your journey and the result is fabulous in my layman’s opinion.
Beautiful painting...you have put in so much effort in studying and understanding every layer which turned out to be a masterpiece. Great job 👍🏻👏🏻

I used to be an artist many many years ago painting or drawing the female nude which most were destroyed by norrow minded people especially women such as teachers.
In thos day's some well renowned artists would say your a great artist but you need to get out of your comfort zone to become better, Colour is best but very hard because of the millions od tones of light and dark which make the foundation of our interpretations in our work.
Good Luck Sweetheart your brilliant, I love your art and nudes even if youtube does not.
Congratulations from North East England
Very lovely work. You are a true artist.
Carly that is simply breath taking, best yet.
Hello, Carly Renee I really liked the work you shared 6 hours ago, I wish you success in your art lif. Thenk you, Goodbye.
When I was watching at the beginning, I thought the monochrome studies were self-portraits. Beautiful work and glad you decided to work in color.
Somehow my portraits always looking a little like me… not sure why 😂
Omg that was absolutely stunning
Stunning vision. be so proud.
RELAX. BREATHE. You ARE supremely talented; the artistic struggle is real- and necessary I think. Because in the end, the RESULT is worth it. Your stuff is gorgeous- and your mentor be damned, so are you. 😂

Once you added color, I feel it came alive
Such an impressive piece Carly and seeing all the video footage/work leading up to it was so interesting. I must try that Italian Pink in my own mixes. Anyway, the Archy can wait but you're definitely finalist material!
Your painting is beautiful love your tone selection greetings from Cape town
Stunning!
So beautiful . I am stuckt in mixing problems like you said
🙋Great work, bravo! Great video, too bad it's so short, good luck!👍👏👏👏👏😍🥰💞
You are an absolutely gorgeous woman and your art work is out of this world. Cheers!
first time in colors? ohhh was it a rewarding feeling? i would imagine so🎉
It really shows when someone loves the subject :)
You are beyond beauty and light up the room. Reminds me of Georgia O’keeffe .
You've even got an artists name, well sounds like it, this is amazing 👏🏼 🙌🏻
Fantastic documentation of the journey. I'm still too scared to try oils but I get the feeling it would be so much better when trying to blend colours etc. I have seen people put a neutral colour on their palettes to help with determining "true" colour value... not sure if that would be useful? The monochrome was lovely... but I do have to agree the colour just brought so much more warmth and life into it. Well done!
Beautiful work & she looks like you!
Beautiful!
Beautiful job🙏🏽
Beautiful work ❤
I love the detailing of your process.
Beautiful work
