@@zman8340 both to be honest. If I could only choose one it would no doubt be the socom 16 due to its versatility pertaining to roles it could play in various operations(cqb, long range, etc.)
Yes!! Mine is a SOCOM 16 with a camo polymer stock. I put an Eotech on it and it is my truck gun for when pistols are not enough! Completely reliable and 2 MOA at 100 yds!
He talks about carrying the Scar into Afghanistan. Believe it or not I carried the M-14 into Afghanistan. I thought it funny when he said that. We pulled them out of the Arms room before deploying in 2004. We equipped them with Leopold scopes, gave them a desert tan camo paint job, and made them our designated marksman rifle. They served us well in Afghanistan but ironically before that they hadn’t been used since being turned in at the end of of Vietnam. Then we brought them with us once again on our next tour to Iraq. Once again served us flawlessly. Sometimes good old Army equipment still does the job even if it is half a century later in another land far, far away. Good review as usual, and God Bless!!!
The M14 was used in Vietnam all the way till 1973. It had been Dismissed as the military's prime weapon. But they were still used. And they were better than any 16 that was on the field. They did not file up. They always shot. And they were very accurate.
@TheWaldtige. I forgot to mention this part. They were collected and stored after Nam. The reason I know this I had to turn mine in. The best shooting weapon I have ever had. I bought a civilian model M14. It's got a tripod and a extremely good scope on it. 800 yd is not a problem with the M14. At least I thought it was 800 yards. The sergeant above me said it was a 1000 or 1100 yd. I don't think it was but I did not argue with him. He was a E7. I was a E5 at the time.
Civilian model is the M1a, yet you made that clear, but still called said weapon a M14. Huge difference in wordage. Btw: I do not believe your post. These were used only as designated marksman rifles as I stated earlier. We only had 1 in a Sage Chassis the rest were in the original stocks which were painted desert camo. I have pictures if you want to see them. Just post your email address and I can send them to you.
@@davidholder-oe1oe I heard that brother, I liked shooting ours every time I got the chance and yes they are a very accurate rifle!!! I know you guy’s had a lot of problems with the new M16’s when they first came out. Since both of them in the beginning of Nam had 20 round magazines I would have definitely picked the stopping power of the 7.62 nato over a .556 any day for the same amount of rounds. Even if having to hump it around was a little heavier. I think it would be worth the trade off. Unfortunately I never got to shoot ours on full auto. The armorer’s took out the selector switch when they turned them into our designated marksman rifle. Guess they were going for accuracy more then suppressive fire. I could imagine that would be a handful to hold onto though !!!
I own this rifle on the synthetic stock and I'm absolutely in love with it. While serving in Iraq I watched our company sniper hit a target from an incredibly long distance, since that day I wanted one badly. I saved my pennies and bought the scout. This year I had a house built on 10 acres and dropped my first deer with it. Incredible rifle, well worth every penny
I have been debating on selling my bolt action .308 to buy one of these M1A. I really like the Scout Squad but also like the M1A loaded. Decisions, Decisions. 😄 Thank you for your service. RAH!!!
Im a new gun owner and am considering this as my 3rd purchase. Us folk in NYC Socialist Republic could only buy one rifle every 90 days.Thank you for your service, Mark.
When I was maybe 15 years old, I didn't know this gun at all at my grandparents house. My grandpa had a lot of guns and I just thought this was an M1 Garand or something. He had one of those too. He took me out to our own gun range to shoot it and I wasn't comfortable with anything 308 because of bolt action recoil. They scared me cause it hurt. He shot this a few times then let me try it. I was nervous. We set out a paper target at a little over 100 yards. Maybe 110ish. First shot kind of scared me but I realized it didn't kick hardly at all! Took another round and it was just loud. Finished off 5 rounds and I was in love. We took our golf cart down and I blew the black out of the bull's-eye. All bullets touching and I couldn't fricken believe it. That's the only gun I did that with, with a peep sight no less. I'm out here watching videos now because I just bought a new M1A yesterday. My grandfather passed away and gave his to my uncle. I need one in my collection to remember my grandfather by. I'll never forget that day at our range.
Hickok is that cool uncle who lives in the middle of nowhere, has all kinds of cool toys like tractors, atvs, a bass boat, etc. and he’s full of all kinds of knowledge that men love & need.
Something about sitting home loading bullets on a cold maine November night with Hickok45 playing on the monitor is my favorite evening pass time. Thanks again for doing all you do, sir. Life is good!
Got the wood stove going,my 2 beagles sleeping on the floor as the wind comes in off the ocean in Boothbay Harbor. You can't beat Hickok45 and Maine....Ahuh.
mine did have a cast bolt. it broke. springfield obviously with their wonderful lifetime warranty replaced it with a forged one and head spaced it for a whopping total of $0.00
That is great to hear, jts1991. When I've spoken to them over the phone they have been helpful and professional. I had an odd quirk with my rifle (case separation) but it has not recurred. If it does, they want the rifle back for inspection.
I've call customer service at Springfield several times over the years for various things. The may have the best customer service I've ever had to deal with.
I was gonna say, its only a matter of time before a brittle cast bolt would snap. Forged metal is more flexible and durable for the long haul than cast metal universally. Tempering > case hardening. More expensive, but far better quality.
I carried the M-14 w/select fire in Vietnam and it never let me down, I also shot it with division rifle team with no scope at 600 yards I got 19 or 20 in the 10x
They are still used in the U.S. Army. 3rd Infantry Regiment. In the Old Guard we still use all current issue firearms but the M1A - M4 is unique. Extremely accurate....it's power is legendary...in well trained hands, it is to be feared, always.
I was issued my first M14 as an JROTC Cadet in my freshman year of high school. Joined the Navy at 17 and was again issued an M14 and a 1911. Carried my 1911 until retirement. The first firearm I bought after I retired from the Navy was an M1A.
I had an M24 when I first got to Vietnam in '66. but a month later I was huey crew chief, and they replaced it with the M16. I didn't have to use the 16 much, mostly fired the M60 on the aircraft, but I always wished I could have kept the M14...
Thanks for your service and your right wood will always be plastic and it don't matter if it's a Glock or an M16 plastic just seems like junk in the hand.
Love that rifle . I was in Army basic training in 1961 and we had M1's. They said that we had a do over and it was back to the rifle range with newly issued M14's . We loved them . Humped one around for three tours in the war .
The safety placement/ease of operation on the M1 and M14 rifles are in my opinion, perfect. The fact that one can determine the state of "safe" on a weapon simply by "feel" instead of putting your eyes on the weapon would be invaluable in night operations or a stressful situation, not to mention the speed at which you can bring your weapon to bear at the drop of a hat.
Hickok, darn it you sold me another gun! Yeah, I bought an M1A Scout Squad last Friday. I love it and keep telling myself that it was a smart buy since it replaces (for me) the M1A Loaded, M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, Mini-14, Mini-30, etc. Yeah, sure - but I have to keep telling myself that. I don't know why I waited so long to get an M1A but glad I finally did. The last ones I had were the ones Uncle Sam issued me from 1966-69. Great shooting and that's a beautiful rifle you've got. I suspect you sold yourself on it, too. I got the FDE composite stock but I do have a walnut GI M14 stock that drops right on. The GI stock weighs 7.5 oz more but oozes with character. Well thanks again for all your excellent videos, you are a hero to all of us older guys! I still can shoot iron sights but not like you.
+Andrew Quesenberry I used it in "68 after a dozen junky M-16's nearly got me killed. I always kept1 mag of tracers to mark for the gunships. Everyone would have carried them if they could have gotten them.
I was in the last platoon series in Marine Corps boot camp to qualify with the M14. Such a great rifle. The M16's we had after that totally sucked, as most were coming back from Vietnam as surplus. I love your M1A. Thanks for posting such a great video. Cheers.
I also was in the Corps in 69 and qualified expert with the M14 with iron sights and it was the first time I ever shot a high caliber rifle. Semper Fi.
Are you kidding me? I was in Platoon 1059, summer of 1973. I joined June 18, 1973 and only because my Draft Number was 12 and I was certain I was going to get drafted, so I did the 9-month delay program. Small world, isn't it? I am also one of the Camp Lejeune Water Contamination victims. I was at Disbursements School at Camp Lejeune right after boot camp--was only there three months--but the frigging water gave me incurable/terminal cancer. I was diagnosed 15 years ago, got 100% disability from the VA 13 years ago, and am one of the first to file a claim with Parker Waichman. Instead of accepting a settlement offer, I am going for the full-blown lawsuit since I endured 6 years of experimental chemotherapy at the University of California, San Diego and my diagnosis cut my career there as a Chief Administrative Officer by 8 years. Hey, if you went to Camp Lejeune and got one of the cancers eligible, I would strongly urge you to contact Parker Waichman attorneys. Jerry Parker helped write the legislation that resulted in Congress passing the law so we can get compensation. The deadline for filing a claim is August 9 of this year, since Congress put a two-year limit on filing a claim. Thanks for responding to my post. I love Hickok 45's videos! Cheers

Hands down one of the best looking firearms ever produced bar none.
Fell in love with it in Basic, knew I wanted one. Many years later I had forgotten about wanting one until one of my friend at the range insisted I try his out. Told him if I shot it I would be buying one. Sure enough, shortly after that day at the range I had my own. Still regard it as a solid rifle, no matter the range.
I used one in the real with a selector switch. It was back up for my track's '60 and when I was dismounted I chose it over the '16. Once you are used to it the length and weight go away in favor of its reliability, accuracy, and hitting power. If the M-60 over heated or what ever I'd grab that M-14 and feed it magazines like no tomorrow. On selector switch, you really went through 'em! A pea bringer. Personally, I loved the weapon and that Scout is the balls.
In the Marine Corps from 1969-1973 the M14 was service rifle from boot camp thru my MOS of 1833. Never had a M16 issued to me. In 1980 I bought my first M1A National Match and used it in NRA High Power Service Rifle Matches for years at 200-600 yards. I screwed up a few times but the rifle never failed. I’ve owned 3 Springfield M1A at different times. 2 National Match and 1 Standard. Great rifles. I know that the Fulton M14 has a forged receiver and the Springfield has a machined cast receiver. Technically the forged receiver is stronger but I never read or heard of a Springfield M1A Receiver to ever fail. The Springfield Receiver is very strong and does a great job. One of my M1As had what was called the California Muzzle Brake. It does reduce recoil.
It’s a straight trade off. Free ownership of firearms and nearly 500 school shootings a year, or only being able to own shotguns and bolt action rifles and having No school shootings in a year.
No need to apologize for the M14/M1A there Hickock. Anyone who knows anything about firearms should understand the level of awesomeness of that rifle. Sure a SCAR, an AR10 or a REPR is more modern, but they fire they same round! Same effect downrange. It's nostalgic if anything, and we should always hold on to that, while still getting the job done!
In defense of my beloved M14, the Safety-on position is inside the Trigger Guard for a reason. Since you should not put your finger inside the Trigger Guard on any firearm and on the trigger until you are ready to pull the trigger, what a better place for the Safety-off position to be initiated. Place finger inside the Trigger Guard, flip finger forward to make ready to fire. When ready to fire breath deep hold breath squeeze trigger to fire. Think about it. Hickok45, I know you know this already. My comment is for those other good folks who are smart enough to watch your videos and learn from them. APSU Class of 71. :>)
Only tried air-soft M14's so no idea how accurate it is to the real steel for feel but have to say the safety on this guns is great for accurate shooting! I can keep my site line and disengage the safety without having to move anything but my finger forward and then back on to the trigger !
I learned on the M14, I qualified on the M14, and I carried the M14. Hands down my favorite rifle. But I have to disagree on the safety. I think the safety position and design is catered to the armorer, and not the shooter. I would much rather have a lever.
Totally agree. I recently purchased the Springfield Armory M1A and LOVE IT!!! I actually prefer having the safety where it's placed on the M1A for the same reason you do. We constantly reminded our Marines (back when I was a commissioned USMC artillery officer) that they should never put their finger on the trigger until just they actually aimed their weapon at a target they intended to shoot (I find that I have to remind my civilian shooting buddies of that same basic rule all the time.). Having that safety inside the trigger guard means the shooter has a tactile signal that the weapon is NOT ready to fire and allows them to disengage the safety with only minimal effort while keeping their finger inside the trigger guard.
This was the rifle we used in basic training at Fort Campbell in 69-70. Have always wanted one. One of our instructors, an E-7, was going to Nam and fired it full auto. He had a steel helmet on and it was so funny because that helmet was rocking back and forth while he was firing.
Every time I see one of these shooting videos I want to just go outside and lay some lead then I remember I live on Long Island in New York and can’t have the same fun you guys can have so I sit my ass back down and wish & pray I can get the hell out of here before I die,I’m 66 yrs old and haven’t had all the fun knocked out of me yet, please help a old Veteran get his glory!!Even if for a day!!Thank You All!!
Love mine. Got the black synthetic because it won't ever swell and it is a little lighter. Best iron sights on any of my rifles. The balance is much better than the full size M1A. It handles better than a Cetme/G3. The trigger is very nice with a very crisp 5.5 lbs pull.
Looks like a blast. My favorite gun is my late grandpas 1895 30-40 krag. It was modified a long long time and everyone that shoots it loves it and can’t believe how old it is
I've had an M1A for five years (Socom 16) and if I had it do to do all over again, I'd still buy an M1A. Maybe the Scout version instead of the Socom 16. There are lighter and maybe better rifles out there, but as a history buff, having an M1A is like holding a piece of history in my hands. A hopped up Garand. Sometimes I take out my M1A just to stare at the receiver for a while.
I enjoy watching the videos you make. I love seeing your range change seasons. The only downside is I tend to want the guns you're showing knowing that I will never be able to afford them. I just need to contend watching you shoot those beautiful guns. Great work Sir!
I just had the opportunity to shoot this last week at the range.First time seeing one and shooting one. Aside from the total badass old school looks, it was AWESOME to shoot! While everyone around us was shooting AR-15s, EVERYONE stopped to look at this rifle! I’m already in the market for one now! Lol. Gotta love Hickok45!!
Jamie Clement my building inspector ( US ) building inspector is a 74 year old active army man. He said he hit the shores of Vietnam a week after turning 17 with a m14 battled his way inland for 2 tours with it . Then one day the Brass brought them some plastic 223 rifles saying they had to change . He said his whole unit sighed a letter stating the only way that would happen was over their dead bodies and every man had just volunteered anoither 2 years of life to the cause. He explained to me they needed the 308 when being charged by a large number so as to shot one time and take up to 4 enemy out . And to penetrate the trees and brush in the jungles. He said he would work till his body stopped permitting him to . Nice ol gent. Nobody questions his inspections!
@@johnwayne7476 So uhhh...couple things... 1 -Your 77 year old full-time building inspector is not Active Duty Army, unless I'm really not getting your meaning here. Maybe he's physically active and his time in the Army really defined him? At any rate, the last active duty Vietnam vet left service in 2014. 2 - only sniper sections used the M14 in Vietnam, anyone who says they got to choose is lying out their ass. 3 - .223 penetrates brush perfectly fine. 4 - Nobody may have questioned his inspections, but they should question his tall tales.

I carried an M-14 in Vietnam and found it to me wonderfully accurate, durable, reliable, easy to field strip and clean. I wouldn't have traded it for an M-16
For a while I was on a rifle team in the military. We had national match M-1's in .308. I loved that rifle. Then I was issued an additional rifle, a rack grade M-14 with a fiberglass stock. OMFG! I honestly couldn't tell any difference in accuracy between it and the M-1's. The only thing I did to it was replace the web sling with a leather one. When we got activated for deployment I showed up with that M-14, and nobody said "boo". Just issued me .308 ammo and extra magazines. The M-1A/M-14 is my favorite rifle. If it ever dropped in the pot that is the rifle I want.
I'm with You, Evan. Mine is glass bedded in a Fajen "midnight" stock. When I take it out of the case at the range I need a fly swatter to keep all of them away. Gorgeous rifle. Sweeeeeeet shooter. If the SHTF this IS the rifle I'll take.
I bought mine almost a couple years ago back in 2018 and I just love it! I have the black stock for it and I just bought myself a Eye Site for it. This would probably be my go-to if I were to go into battle! It's a very dependable extremely accurate and it can shoot 1000 yards out. At first before I got it I was debating whether to get the socom or the original version but I got the best for of Both Worlds and decided on my Scout Squad. This is the gun to choose in my opinion!
Have to agree with you Hickok, as far as battle rifles go I love the M1A design. I recently just purchased a Socom16 CQB and I simply love the thing. Paid a little more for it than I would have liked at a local big box store, but it is a sweet shooter for sure. Actually I think it is making my original M1A and my AR rifles jealous because they haven't seen the light of day much since bringing home the Socom!
The M-14 is still the issue battle rifle of the Marines. Has been since 1959. Most folks think that it is the M-16 but the Marines make the distinction between a rifle and a carbine. Like most "crusty" old combat Marines, I have something of a love, hate relationship with the 16. For the most part I am not a fan of the carbine, the rifle is much more versatile/dependable, in my not so humble opinion. As always YMMV;-)
I got out of the Navy in '99 and was a Gunner. I never saw an M-14 or 1911 fail and I was stationed on two different ships. They phased the 1911 out and introduced the only weapon that I personally saw fail--~~ the Beretta 9mm M9. I saw many jams, bent firing pins, etc.
I think it largely depends on how well the firearms are maintained. If they're shot a lot and poorly looked after it could happen to anything. I've never seen Berettas fail, but I never understood why that was the handgun chosen for military service.
To be completely honest, I just bought this gun. I think gun manufacturers need to start sending you some free gear for all your reviews uncle hickok. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and allowing us to be a part of all your amazing pew pew glory.
Thanks, but we work pretty hard NOT to accept stuff from gun companies. You wouldn't want us to be overly influenced by any specific gun companies, right? Next thing you know, we'd be editing out and hiding malfunctions if that company failed to give us stuff. :-)
Found a M1A and probably be buying her tomorrow. Lots of people trash on them but I love them, especially being America's last battle rifle has something to due with that.
my most accurate rifle position: prone. 2nd favorite: seated w/ elbows buried in the crook of my knees. Least favorite: offhand, which Hickok uses in his rifle vids. the offhand (standing in civilian jargon) without a doubt is the least stable rifle fire position and this guy uses it very successfully and while quickly changing target distances. blows me away
You and my Dad look alot alike, another reason why I love to watch your channel 🥲 He was a Vietnam Vet, died in 2018 from brain cancer. Hugh Wilkins 1945-2018🇺🇲
Hickok45 it was because of you that I have my M1A Scout Squad. I purchased the rifle in 2012 as a wedding gift to myself. It’s a nail driver and it’s dialed in at 100 yards.
I dont care what anyone says, this is by far my favorite semi-auto 7.62 rifle ever made besides the Garand. It is heavy but that lends to a smoother recoil in the shoulder and follow up shots. It is what it is. Only in my opinion.
It took me 3 years but I finally got the SOCOM16 . It’s an amazing weapon, down to the high pitched ring after firing a round. It’s predictable and reliable. What else do you need?
The M1A Super Match with a glass beaded rear luged receiver, super match bull barrel, & oversized walnut stock is the Cadillac. Best rifle ever produced. I've sent a 5 shot a group down range at 100 meters bench rest with hand loads Hornady 168 grain boat tail hollow points and am very proud to say the result was all 5 at 6/10 of an inch from center. AWSOME!!
***** I always refer my country as England, as there a different laws in UK, in Northern Ireland handguns are allowed. in Scotland all air weapons will require a UK type firearms cetificate, At least they haven`t banned kitchen knives and forks yet, our laws are a joke, can`t mail order a co2 gun or air weapon from a UK dealer, but can mail order from any EU gun dealer.
One major upgrade over the Garand is the ability to top-off the mag with 5 round stripper clips without removing the mag. Also; what bi-pod do you recommend ( if any) for the M1A ? IMO,, the biggest problem with these rifles is that they were developed too late for Korea, and they shot too far for most situations in Vietnam. The M16 was the compromise. A friend served in the first Gulf War as an Army MP. He told me that he saw US Marines fist-fighting over the very limited number of M-14's. We certainly understand why.
Waffled on this a while and kept watching this video. Finally got mine delivered to the store a few weeks ago and took it to the range. First 'oldschool' rifle I have and I love it.
Ive had my scout squad for probably 8-9 years now. Its never malfunctioned once. It might not be the latest and greatest modern rifle but its a hell of a fun gun, and very effective.
wiipimp32 Well I don't think the U.S./Allies used an M1 that shot garland out of it as you said. We weren't exactly in the Christmas spirit with the enemy back in the WWII days. You may have been confused with the Christmas truce of WWI, although, that involved England and Germany and not the U.S. But, even that event was probably false. Medal of Honor was incredible for its day for sure. Video games don't have to be 100% right all the time.
Dude.you're wrong. The m1 grand, Thompson smg and m1911 we the primarey armaments of the allies. Brits has the sten, Enfield and their anti tank rifles. The m1 shot 8 7.62 calibre rounds and was tweir primary battlerifle. The m1a didn't come around till the end of ww2 I'm prototype form. Perfected it became the m1a. Perfected further they made the m14 which made the m16. God almight close your face before you look more like an idiot. Medal of honor, world war two has nothing to do with this firearm.
For those of us in California, these things are great. AR-15, AR-10, SCAR-H, all illegal because they have a pistol grip. These? Buy all you want. Even the new tighter restrictions don't change that (as far as I know).
I really want to get one of these. I'm in college so I would need to keep it at my parent's house; but in the least I can shoot it on the weekends. I just want a great semi auto rifle that is reliable and doesn't require the dang rifle to be disassembled to remove the magazine. California is so bloody Communist they may try to outlaw these so I want to get one quick and deck it out.
So in CA doesn't require the crazy clip modifications that make you basically take the gun partially apart to reload????? Also mini 14 as well? Like to here. Thanks
In 2011, I bought a Springfield SOCOM 16 for $1800 in Sierra Vista, Arizona. I installed a bipod on it and had a scout scope for it. In 2013, I sold it to my buddy for the same price I bought it for with 10 mags from 10 to 30 rounds. I honest regret selling it and I will buy another. I can say the weapon is highly accurate. I was hitting steel targets 650 to 800 yards away in SV, AZ with minimal adjustments for windage. It is an excellent weapon and extremely well made and highly accurate.
I have to say the M1-a Scout Squad would be close to the 'perfect' rifle for me, and if I was allowed to get a license for one (I live in Australia and it is very difficult to obtain a semi auto rifle license) the M1-a Scout Squad would be the rifle I would buy.
***** I doubt you could fit much more stupid into one statement....come back when you actually grow a brain. I wonder what you would have done in my place when your Government turned on you, an all of the civilian firearm owners (which BTW are still in minority in Australian society)?????
Goin to smith and Wesson’s old range was one the greatest experiences I’ve ever had. When it was open you could rent any handgun they made it was amazing
9 years later im still watching Hickock 45's videos on the M1A. Is anyone else watching them aside from me???
Yep I still want one , socom or scout ?
Both. No joke. 🎯@@zman8340

They served us well in Afghanistan but ironically before that they hadn’t been used since being turned in at the end of of Vietnam. Then we brought them with us once again on our next tour to Iraq.
Incredible rifle, well worth every penny
that is fantastic. nice going with the property too.
I have been debating on selling my bolt action .308 to buy one of these M1A. I really like the Scout Squad but also like the M1A loaded.
Decisions, Decisions.

@@princesbay1878 it's a fantastic rifle, you won't regret it. From defending your family, or hunting large game it can do it all.
I would like one myself but keep up the good work.
Late reply, but my condolences
That sucks about your grandfather and him giving that to your uncle. But at least you replaced it.
My first gun is shot was a double barrel shotgun, didn’t even use ear protection
Thanks for that gay story that went no where

Filling some mags and/or clips?
mine did have a cast bolt. it broke. springfield obviously with their wonderful lifetime warranty replaced it with a forged one and head spaced it for a whopping total of $0.00
That is great to hear, jts1991.
More expensive, but far better quality.
as it should be.
Thanks shooter, I like springfield, and hearing good things about them. Their TRP is worth the money, by the way. Full length guide rod
I personally love wood on guns. It just looks right.
Hey, Black guns matter!

Did you shoot in the President's 100 at 600 yards? That was the only time I fired one at 600 yards.
They are still used in the U.S. Army. 3rd Infantry Regiment. In the Old Guard we still use all current issue firearms but the M1A - M4 is unique. Extremely accurate....it's power is legendary...in well trained hands, it is to be feared, always.
@trsptv4498 M1A Standard Issue 22"
@TRSPtv because it is bigger? 22" barrel vs 18.5"
I was issued my first M14 as an JROTC Cadet in my freshman year of high school. Joined the Navy at 17 and was again issued an M14 and a 1911. Carried my 1911 until retirement. The first firearm I bought after I retired from the Navy was an M1A.
Hickok45 is such a big guy that all the rifles and handguns he handles look small and light. I'm always amazed at that.
Carried the M-14 in Nam for my 12 month deployment. Just can't beat it. Never did care for the M-16. Wood is good.
But the M-16 was swell, made by Mattel!!!
I had an M24 when I first got to Vietnam in '66. but a month later I was huey crew chief, and they replaced it with the M16. I didn't have to use the 16 much, mostly fired the M60 on the aircraft, but I always wished I could have kept the M14...
thoughts on the safety?
QuentinQuatermass Yes, nice rifle; in fact, we just had the enjoyment of doing a Chapter 2 video with the thing a few minutes ago. :-)
Great news! Can't wait to see it. Sounds like you now have two M1As! That Scout Squad in walnut would be VERY hard to send back.
Lol it's a great rifle for sure. I've had mine for about 2 years and have yet to find a rifle I enjoy shooting more.
The M14/M1A is by far the prettiest gun I have ever seen. It's a shame we never really used it much in war.
Cheers.
did you stick napalm to kids?
I also was in the Corps in 69 and qualified expert with the M14 with iron sights and it was the first time I ever shot a high caliber rifle. Semper Fi.
God bless you ❤
When & where? I was in Platoon 1056, series 1053, summer '73. We were the last series to go through boot camp with the M14 in MCRD San Diego.

My socom is wonderful
I think that Springfield M1 Scout looks so much better than any AR or AK!
EXACTLY!!!!
True indeed!!!
Who else watches Hickok45 in morning while eating breakfast and sipping coffee?
Man, as a Brit it sucks I can't try that. I love American rifles!
The G3 series is a good trade off. We can't get those... Unless y'all can't get German rifles either
If you have the money you can have one of those in the UK but it wouldn't be semi auto it'd have to be a straight pull. Shame. They are beautiful.
Freedom would look good on you, come on over and try it.
Airsoft? V for Vendetta?
Keeper Oath Yeah, I don't really have a problem with the safety; I rather like it there.
Parris Island we were taught to use only our thumb to turn off safety! Anyone else?

Love mine. Got the black synthetic because it won't ever swell and it is a little lighter. Best iron sights on any of my rifles. The balance is much better than the full size M1A. It handles better than a Cetme/G3. The trigger is very nice with a very crisp 5.5 lbs pull.
Out of all the guns I've seen Hickok shoot, this is one of my favorites
When I was in basic training I was taught to take the the safety off of the weapon with my thumb to prevent accidental discharge. It became a habit
Well that view just cost me $1500. The older I get the more I appreciate the beauty of a wood stock rifle.

Wow, hickok you're my hero! Thanks for keeping the traditions alive, Jason from Canada.

Just a beautiful rifle. One to passed down to the next generation proudly. A 100 year gun all day....

Loffen NYR i agree totaly.
Get a little dirt or mud in them and they fail quite a bit when compared to a Kalashnikov
Tony Arnott
Didn't encounter much dirt onboard a ship. But I get your point.
I think it largely depends on how well the firearms are maintained. If they're shot a lot and poorly looked after it could happen to anything. I've never seen Berettas fail, but I never understood why that was the handgun chosen for military service.
Jake Celo
We had 2 dozen come to our ship(new), we sent 6 back. That's a 25% margin of error. And that was before we even shot them.
M9 is and was a POS

My uncle served in Vietnam and he loved this weapon over the m16 bc it was very powerful and accurate and it didn’t jam
I wish we could have that out here in Australia. We miss out on so much fun.
Sad, you lost them a few years ago. Pray and get active so it doesn't happen in the US.
Come to England we can`t even mail order a BB gun. and scotland are about to implement a firearms licence for all air weapons.
***** I always refer my country as England, as there a different laws in UK, in Northern Ireland handguns are allowed. in Scotland all air weapons will require a UK type firearms cetificate,
At least they haven`t banned kitchen knives and forks yet, our laws are a joke, can`t mail order a co2 gun or air weapon from a UK dealer, but can mail order from any EU gun dealer.
bmwnasher spoons will be banned soon here in the UK too. The only thing we can do is watch these great videos.
***** Don`t worry we have a Welsh parliment a Scottish one and a Northern Ireland assembly, does that sound united,
One major upgrade over the Garand is the ability to top-off the mag with 5 round stripper clips without removing the mag.
“Well, I like it” is the only verification I need from this man!
Waffled on this a while and kept watching this video. Finally got mine delivered to the store a few weeks ago and took it to the range. First 'oldschool' rifle I have and I love it.
The last great battle rifle. A nice wood stock with the pedigree of the garand.
My T/O weapon when I was in the Marine Corps was an M14.
Everybody should have one in there collection.
BigFun4Lif
Glock
Yes sir I agree
Yessir.
Indeed. Or 2!
Yes But not everybody has $2,000 to spend on a rifle.
"Oh well, the wife and Kids didn't need to eat anyway."
"Whatever 'better' means"
Thank you for saying this
Ive had my scout squad for probably 8-9 years now. Its never malfunctioned once. It might not be the latest and greatest modern rifle but its a hell of a fun gun, and very effective.
I swear this man has reviewed every gun in existence
Love this gun, and yes it reminds of the Playstation game Medal of Honor. Where's my 90's people at ?
tooootally different era tho... wouldnt you say that on the garand video -.-
Grew up playing Medal of Honor on PS2. Awesome game!
wiipimp32 well mainly the beginning of that game since the garand had 5 shots for it too. And plus any video game coinciding with WWII is awesome !
wiipimp32 Well I don't think the U.S./Allies used an M1 that shot garland out of it as you said.
I hope that 20 years from now Hickok45's trigger finger still works and he is still making these fine firearm videos.
I'm from the future, and he is! You wouldn't believe what he does in videos now...
True that. Lost interest in my ar with all the rules, keeping the sks and picking up an m1a
They'll come for these eventually
Mini 14, an sks, keltec AR or a m1a those are your options for new York and california shitholes
So in CA doesn't require the crazy clip modifications that make you basically take the gun partially apart to reload????? Also mini 14 as well? Like to here. Thanks
Springfield M1 rifles and the variants rock period! love this channel.
When he's holding an m1A, it looks like a ruger mini 14
Mini 14 is based off this rifle lmao
@@Nak3dPirat3 Duh. We know that. The OP is talking about how big Hickok45 is. When a man is 6'9" or so, he makes big guns look really small
Matt Gold this rifle but the more on the M1A standard
@@The_Big_Smoochie He is 6'8" but whatever
Such a beautiful rifle
This is such a fantastic video. You have more than convinced me that my want for this rifle was justified, and earned a new subscriber!
Mr. Hitchcock, after so many years you are still the best. Thanks for your posts.
I just bought me an m1a scout just like that and I'm in love with the quality.
I love the M1A Great video Hickok KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK ( :
I have to say the M1-a Scout Squad would be close to the 'perfect' rifle for me, and if I was allowed to get a license for one (I live in Australia and it is very difficult to obtain a semi auto rifle license) the M1-a Scout Squad would be the rifle I would buy.
***** I doubt you could fit much more stupid into one statement....come back when you actually grow a brain.
I wonder what you would have done in my place when your Government turned on you, an all of the civilian firearm owners (which BTW are still in minority in Australian society)?????
Man that's a beautiful weapon, saving up to buy one think I'll go with the Scout model
Mine had the polymer stock, but I changed it to walnut for the Vietnam look .Also I added the bayonet lug.Love it.
Goin to smith and Wesson’s old range was one the greatest experiences I’ve ever had. When it was open you could rent any handgun they made it was amazing
