    It's funny all the hubbub about the AR15, when this rifle is far, far, more devastating.
    It grand ole gal for sure!!

    • @danksley
      @danksley 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AR15 has better handling, and the smaller cartridge is easier to squeeze off a lot of shots with, along with a better optics mount position.
      These are absolutely amazing, though. Especially for longer reach. Got to work with one and its my rifle goal for this summer.

    • @GrySgtBubba
      @GrySgtBubba 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@danksley Idk bout the easier to get more shots off part. The M1A is a Cadillac of rifles. Softest shooting 308 I've come across. You can easily mag dump ona target at 50yrds and get 20 hits. Everything else I pretty much agree with. But, I'll still always choose the M1A (Scout model anyway) over an AR15 any day. It's pros just far outweigh the cons IMO, and the cons aren't all that bad. Just a training issue.

      You guys apparently havent shot a tuned AR10… it spanks M1As in every way except the pretty wood stock which enemy combatants dont give a rats ass about.

      When I bought it in early ‘19, the MSRP was around $1800, but could be found pretty easily for $1600. Found the limited edition flag stick on Buds for $1200 and jumped on it. If I had the money I would have bought two! I saw a Socom in an oddball color stock on Buds a few months ago for around $1250. If you check often, they run great sales on there, but they go quick!

    Bought one a couple of years ago. Although I own some AR's, I wanted something with a bit more umph to it in a semi-auto. I have a 30-06 ( Ruger American ) for a mule deer rifle and having shot an M-14 in Vietnam, I settled on buying an M-1A, and opted for this same model. Shorter than the issue M-14, with an option for optics. Pushing 70 now, the old eyes ain't what they used to be.
    Even though the recoil is quite manageable, I opted for adding a butt pad, to soften recoil further.

Much much better but I couldn't see it either. Had fluorescent orange paint applied and it is a world of difference!!!!!!!!!!!!! Enjoyed the shooting as much as the tabletop. Like you, I have searched the internet for a replacement front sight that is thinner, brighter and night sights with no luck. Thank you! I got an m1a standard this past Christmas. New. Black plastic stock. Tried to get one in walnut for 2 years. First shot it jammed. Finally got charging handle to let go. 2shots later, jammed again. All this after lubing it before shooting. Sent back, 3 -4 weeks later went to range and it embarrassed the heck out of me again. Called S.A. said will send me a shipping label again to send it back. Costs me nothing to send or get back,but that's not good enough. I want something I can trust. My Viet. Name vet buddy said it is a cursed rifle. He would rather go to battle with a slingshot .!!!!! If it screws up again when I get it back I guarantee it will be collecting dust. I believe I will love this thing if it will work!

    Oh please. That's what, 20 yards?
    I just inherited the grand-daddy of the (late) COL Jeff Cooper scout rifle concept: The Remington 600 Mohawk in .308 (he got the idea from this rifle).
    I'm putting two round groups of Federal-brand ammo through the same hole at 100 yards.
    Even steel-cased Tula .308 was surprisingly accurate through this rifle: Grouped high and slightly to the right (WRT the Federal), but in a 1-1/2" three-round group with two of the holes on the paper touching. This was all done bipod supported on a bench, with a Vortex red-dot sight (no magnification).

    I’ve had the exact same M1A SS for a couple years now and love it. I initially put an Aimpoint on the rail then ended up using a Primary Arms 1-6 LPVO which gives me more precision at distance while still being able to engage closer targets quickly. The M1A is outclassed by medium to high end modern AR10’s in most classes. But I love the old school look and function of the M1A. I already have several AR’s so getting a .308 one didn’t really appeal to me.

      @@HammerK99 nope. I used a SADLAK Airborn mount with Warne Mountain Lite rings and a cheek riser (forget manufacturer). Mounting a scope on a M1A is a pain in the ass. In all reality, a AR10 would be a more practice choice but I just love the old school coolness. I did run a Aimpoint T2 micro on the scout rail for a while and that worked great but it obviously didn’t have any magnification.

    Personally a 16” barrel length for this rifle is too short. Too much wasted energy and muzzle flash, loss of velocity and is very LOUD. 18” barrels for 7.62X51 is as short as I would want. Love this rifle. A scout is in my future. Love the wood stock and butt plate but wanting the “plastic” for the weigh savings. Just can’t decide on the color yet. Black is a maybe and I don’t like tan.

    • @GrySgtBubba
      @GrySgtBubba 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eh, energy is mostly irrelevant. It's only bout 30-60+ difference depending what ammo you use. I've taken game no prob with a 14.5" pinned passed 500 just as easily as if I had a 20". With 308 anyways, as it's such a forgiving round, it's bout the only caliber I can think of that doesn't care too much bout barrel length. I've made good "combat" groups out to 1000 with the 14.5 pinned, 16", 18", 20 & 24, with groups only really gettin tighter. But personally, an 18" is the best I've found too. But if you're hunting, a Socom or Scout will do ya the exact same.
      Oh, I would advice gettin a threaded muzzle adapter and throwin ona flash hider to help with that super loudness of the Socom! I went with the Surefire WarComp.

Unfortunately not too much in the way of aftermarket triggers, all I hear is get a gunsmith job which is less than ideal. Matter of fact theres not too much aftermarket period, there's some but not everything. Id build one someday though, once I source enough parts to ARify it.

      1) Don't be afraid of the smoke coming from the barrel shroud the first few times you fire it.
      2) The normal cleaning instructions are sufficient. However, be prepared for the chamber brush to come apart when you try to remove it. Have a pair of needle nose pliers handy.
      3) Sometimes getting the op-rod out for the first time can be frustrating. Watch instruction videos very carefully for the exact position of the op-rod for removal.
      4) I had to zero my iron sights when i got mine. I just had to mess with the peep sight to get it zero'd, and it didn't take long.
      5) Have fun!

    Great video. I bought the scout squad a while back. Mine consistently shoots 5” high at 100 yards even though the rear sight is bottomed out. 10” high at 50 yards. I’ve read that you have to make sure you have the correct front sight for the shorter barrel scout squad model. Which mine does. Just curious on yours, how it shoots and which front sight do you have.

      Yes. It is louder than the 22” barreled version. It’s not really extra loud for the shooter but rather the blast is directed toward anyone off to the side of the shooter.

    It's a great rifle full size. . . .I like mine. . . .but the rifle is too big and hefty for a short barrel. . . you lose accuracy of a long barrel, and just get too much noise and flash . if you want a close combat design, there are better, lighter ones out there.

      @@JC-sj2pd to start it was the most inaccurate rifle I've ever owned 3 moa at best. Any scope mounting is a compromise and the cheekweld was like 4 inches high. The weight ,but that i expected.. running it suppressed would blast hot gas right in your face worse than any other gun on the planet.. price of parts were ridiculous. It was tempermental of mags and ammo and combinations of the two. Springfield customer service was top notch they replaced my bolt when it failed for free. The accuracy and the jams were the deal breaker. Sold it and bought a rem 700 AND paid for an aero 308 build. The aero never jams and about .5 mom scope fits well.
