    This movie is so ridiculously underrated. Daniel Von Bargen is absolutely menacing as Nix.

  •  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    Daniel von Bargen, the greatest Evil Wizard before Evil Wizards were a thing. The acting, the voice, the smirking, the quotes, nix is the ultimate personification of a twisted wizard.
    Even being an underrated movie, Lord of Illusions has a special place in my heart.
    It represents an era of the cinema that is long forgotten, everything now is made to be a blockbuster.
    Unpopular Opinion, Daniel as Nix, wearing some simple make up, lame vfx has a greater terrifying presence than Vecna, Voldemort, Sarumann and Darth Sidious together.
    Great actor, may his soul rest in peace after the ordeals he has endured during his last years. My be gone, but never forgotten

    My mom died when I was six , and my father would always be away or work over night. My sister also would be over her boyfriends house or upstairs sleep. This was one of a few movies that brought me comfort during those times alone at the age of 8..I always felt like Swan...I always felt like Swan.I never found this movie scary. It thought it was magical. It was just magical to me.Its like I horcrux to me. The first dream I could ever remember having was a nightmare. I just always felt like I existed in 2 different world's.

    • @crcurran
      @crcurran 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@captainunload The beauty of the cinematography, the attractive actors and their melodic voices, the beautiful prose even the ones with evil intent, the magic, the fight against evil and being victorious. It can easily be a movie of comfort to a horror fan.
      Nix speaks cryptically like he has a knowledge beyond our understanding. "“I was a man who wanted to be a god; and changed his mind.” "I wasn't born to show the people the error their ways; I was born to murder the world." Sinister to be sure but also beautiful.
      Horror can be quite comforting as you're distracted from the concerns of your own life and give the concern of others. Their victory of evil is your victory.

    At the end, as Nix shows whatever is inside of him, I wonder if perhaps his body is playing host to some sort of force from beyond. Maybe Nix isn't really Nix anymore but has been merged with something else. At the begging of the film, he gathers up followers and seems ready to reveal something to them. At the end, he kills them all without a second thought. Why bother gathering them and telling them about the fire (whatever it was) if he just intended to kill them all? Post resurrection, his personality goes from religious extremist to genocidal. There seems to have been something influencing him. Nix doesn't receive a lot of characterization but the change suggests to me some influence is exerting itself on Nix.

    • @i_accept_all_cookies
      @i_accept_all_cookies 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I just want to recap the story here, so you don't miss something. Nix is an evil guru, tells his followers about the fire speaking to him, proposes a sacrifice of a girl, some followers rebel, they kill him and bury him, years later he comes back to life, he kills all his followers for abandoning him. Ok, so let's take a breather here. This story is the antithesis to the story of Jesus (who obviously didn't kill his followers when he rose from the dead). Nix is a representation of the anti-Christ. His purpose is to "murder the world".

    Honestly surprised this hasn't had a remake. I always found it more interesting than Hellraiser, more so because everyone in the film is a character, including the villain, Pinhead is just more of an entity than anything else, whereas Nix is some kind of in-between, a human who ar some point became more than that and became more lonely as a result.

      Remember how he tells Swann to see flesh through the eyes of a god, then Swann freaks out and sees his friends as living piles of mud and shit and worms? That’s the price Nix paid for his power. That’s how he sees all life on Earth, now that he is on the brink of godhood, and he is so disgusted by it that he decides he must extinguish all of it. He is a child bringing his boot down upon an anthill. Easily one of my favorite horror movie villains because he is just so shamelessly pathetic and misanthropic.

    • @atklm1
      @atklm1 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Kafka779 I think we all have a pretty good idea of what's under human skin and inside bowels. Brink of godhood? With quick feat analysis and power scaling, he's just a man with mild telekinetic and even smaller pyrokinetic powers, maybe some meager matter manipulation tricks. Mental abilities below average. His philosophical viewpoints are below fridge magnet level. He dropped from a handgun bullet. Puny god.

    • @Kafka779
      @Kafka779 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@atklm1 I’m not talking about bowels or insides, I’m talking about how the essence of life itself has become disgusting to him. “The grave is lonely, but living is worse,” and all that. Also, I meant “brink of godhood” by his standards, not by anyone else’s. He’s delusional and megalomaniacal and misanthropic. Even at the height of his power, he gets tackled into a pit by a PI and explodes. Nix claims he wanted to be a god but changed his mind, but I think it is more likely he is so embittered by his failure to transcend and now he wants to make the world pay for his own hubris. You can honestly run with a few different interpretations, but it’s all there in the text.
      EDIT: Also! You’re absolutely right about his philosophy being shallow as hell. Nix has an impotent rage that puts him on par with most school shooters. Clive Barker himself said he wanted Nix to be deeply uncharismatic, and I think he nailed it.

    • @atklm1
      @atklm1 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Kafka779 Ah, I see, you are interpreting the feelings they portray. Like a painting, what feelings it "emanates". I was focusing in his words and logic behind them. But it's interesting you mentioned those shootings, because that reminds of psychological phenomenon that has persisted since ancient times. Those happening in schools is just one form of it. Familicides can be one too. Psychologist have some consensus of the mechanism behind it. Sometimes happens suddenly, like during recession, when very rich men became very poor very fast. It can also accumulate, stale rage cooking slowly, and when person increasingly hates oneself, they project it to other people; exceedingly despising the humanity itself. It showed when after resurrection Nix appeared also more repulsive. As they view themselves, they project the disgust of themselves to other people; a psychological defense mechanism.
      When they boil slowly down all the way, they are experiencing the apocalypse, so they want to create their apocalypse to other people, whom they despise and view as a reason of their own pain inside. Fueling even more hatred when they see the happiness of other people, which they themselves are incapable of even experiencing. It's an interesting viewpoint, maybe portraying the darker side of humanity from the shadows, that has become more frequent along the increasing stresses of modern society and rising expectations.
