This scene is like a different punch in the face every 7 seconds. "Didn't get much sleep last night"* Fleabag sideways smirk*. Her face when he says he's going to talk about love and for the rest of the speech is possibly as vulnerable as we ever see her "Makes you obsessed with your hair!" *Martin looking distraught cause Claire has changed her hair and he knows she's in love, and it isn't with him* "It takes strength to know what's right" and Fleabag's stricken face when she begins to realise he doesn't mean her The unspoken question she asks and he answers with the look that passes between them Claire leaving at the last minute "Be strong and take heart all you who hope", almost like he's telling her that they will both be okay because they know how to love, even if they can't have each other
Also when he said “when you find somebody that you love it feels like hope” he looked indecisive at Fleabag trying to stick to her glaze, but then he looked up secure, to God. There it’s when we understand that he chose God.
Love is awful. It's awful, It's painful, It's frightening. Makes you doubt yourself, judge yourself. Distance yourself from the other people in your life. Makes you selfish, makes you creepy, makes you obsessed with your hair, makes you cruel, makes you say and do things you never thought you would do. It's all any of us want, and It's hell when we get there. So no wonder It's something we don' want to do on our own. I was taught, if we're born with love. Then life is about choosing the right place to put it. People talk about that a lot, it feeling right. "When it feels right, It's easy." But I'm not sure that's true. It takes strength to know what's right. And love isn't something that weak people do. Being a romantic takes a hell of a lot of hope. I think what they mean is when you find somebody that you love, it feels like hope.
Have done some thinking. My interpretation: He's talking about how awful his love for God is making him feel. He's angry that it has made him be selfish and sacrifice the chance to be with Fleabag even though that's not what's best for her. In the end, he is strong enough to let Fleabag go because love is hope and he believes in the 'hope in the Lord'. Then upon hearing the speech, Claire is prompted to follow suit and go after what means the most to her :')
I like all the thought put into your ideas regarding behind the scenes character motivations, but I disagree. I relate to the speech perfectly as it simply is, but I am a 37 year old woman whose heart has been decimated and my identity shattered along with it several times over by loss of loves. I take it at face value. Love is awful. If you don’t know why or how then live and love a little longer, or otherwise count your blessings that a miraculous partnership situation has been your reality, at least for a time. Everything changes, it’s the 2nd law of thermodynamics (broadly speaking). A
I love you and forever miss you Natalee Damron. I don’t know why you left me with this. But I will think about it until we meet again. Rest in Peace. I love you.
This scene alone has so many hidden messages that explains the ending. The priest was ready to risk it all for Fleabag, he was about to do his love speech, looks at her, she has a disapproving look and realized she's not ready to commit. She was not ready for someone to leave everything behind just to be with her, she felt she's still not deserving of that type of love because of how broken she is. She needed to love herself first and I feel hopeful she's on that path since she didn't need us(audience) anymore depicted in the ending.
what 😂 that's a new one. He says that love is not something weak people do, referencing his issues with alcohol. He couldn't leave the church because he felt it's the only thing keeping him sober. They reference that throughout the season
That is totally not what he meant or how she feels. Lmao. Where did you get that from. Lol They were both ready for each other. It wasn't about her. She validated her feelings clearly at the end. But the fact remained. He is a priest. Simple, clear and shut.
i think i found my love, i have been with him for 14 months now. love is everything the priest says it is. everything. its painful, its awful, its amazing, its hope. everything seems a bit terrifying now and i'm so scared but i'm going to choose to hope. and i know i'm not alone.
Does the priest break the fourth wall here ? There’s several instances he seems to be looking directly into the camera but I can’t tell if he is looking at us or fleabag
I love the ending but also hate it at the same time sort of like the ending of season one of TEOTFW(when we thought it was going to be the last season) bittersweet. Ps he could also be talking about his love of God in this scene.
It's really fun, you should give it a try! But in case you don't mind knowing about the ending... [OBVIOUS SPOILER WARNING FROM NOW ON, just in case] Fleabag's sister Claire likes her finnish business partner (hilariously named Klare) who's flying back home soon. She had decided to not chase after him, but changes her mind after that speech.
I didn't feel like this was a good or poignant speech. I felt more like he was having a mental breakdown. Could've been I guess, knowing the character.

hi , that was so well put ?????? Thank you for writing this , im crying my eyes out
You missed when he said "makes you creepy" an the camera pointed to jake
This is amazing, thank you
Oh my god, thanks so much for that one!!
Also when he said “when you find somebody that you love it feels like hope” he looked indecisive at Fleabag trying to stick to her glaze, but then he looked up secure, to God. There it’s when we understand that he chose God.
"So no wonder it's something we don't want to do on our own". I love this interpretation of love.
This is the most accurate description of love I’ve ever heard !
Love is awful. It's awful, It's painful, It's frightening. Makes you doubt yourself, judge yourself. Distance yourself from the other people in your life. Loved this speech. And how Andrew Scott delivered it.
it is so brilliant...
Valentine’s Day, so of course I had to come back to this scene.
I burst into tears watching this. It was so dead on!
omg me too LOL I sobbed into my pint of ice cream
Ugly cry and then laugh and then cry
Oh fleabag I love you and it broke my heart when you said goodbye
And it really sucks when the only slice of hope you have left in life is the love you have for someone, and then they leave you hopeless.
Hope and happiness comes from within. One day at a time.
And it's the one of the most beautiful thing someone said about love.
its the way i watch this scene religiously
Someone like my comment please so i come back to this masterpiece of a scene ❤
i love how the stories connected this season was a masterpiece

Wow that's a nice interpretation
One of the best monologues in television history.
This show was absolutely heartbreaking and absolutely brilliant.
Not gonna lie- this made me realize a LOT about myself, and answered quite a few questions that had been bugging me-
It's all any of us want, and it's *_hell_* when we get there! 😂😂😅
His neck. His beautiful neck!
This episode was painful to watch . But I keep going back anyways.
PWB greatest writer ever
Phoebe (Fleabag) reaction when Andrew (Priest) says "Love is awful".
I love you and forever miss you Natalee Damron. I don’t know why you left me with this. But I will think about it until we meet again.
Rest in Peace. I love you.
Makes you obsessed with your hair
Hahahahaha yes!
Hair is everything

He doesn't, he's looking at fleabag
‘Love isn’t something weak people do’ wow
No weakies!

Fleabag and TEOTFW are my ultimate favorite shows!!
The same guy that played a psychopath that shot himself in the mouth.
That's fucking range.
¿Debería ver Fleabag por quinta vez? Debería ver Fleabag por quinta vez.
LOVE IS AWFUL

nrtrr Thank you very much!! You’re really sweet! 😊
I love how she ruined her stepmother's wedding, and made it about her. She had it coming!
yOuRs
Damn !! Now I have to write something better than this. 😭
I didn't feel like this was a good or poignant speech. I felt more like he was having a mental breakdown. Could've been I guess, knowing the character.
Why was he fingering that bible
