  • Recording sound for your video with a dedicated audio recorder can help you get much better sound. In this video, we talk through how to sync that sound with your video. You can do this with any good video editing software.

    By far the best explanation I've seen on TH-cam. You've touched on the sample rate issue which is best to prepare for ahead of time; no one else mentioned it.

    @erezbens This is a new mic: Giant Squid Audio Mono Omnidirectional Lav. I'll have a review up in the next couple of weeks on it but I can say right now that I like this new mic quite a lot better than the Audio Technica.

    @erezbens It does not have power--the Zoom H1 takes care of that. I was skeptical at first but amazingly, even without power, it sounds better and requires less EQ in post production than the Audio Technica. Part of the reason this works is that the Giant Squid Audio's cable is much shorter and is better shielded. That seems to make a huge difference.

    @SparkieWaller2009 Yes, that's my opinion. And of course you can get the H2 a lot closer to your talent which is very important in getting a good final result.

  • @curtisjudd
    @curtisjudd  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @jackychanelectronics I looked at the specs on the sony voice recorder and the major limitation is that it only records in mp3 format which is a compressed/lossy format. I'd avoid that. The Zoom H1 records in WAV format which is uncompressed so that you have more room to edit it before compressing it in your final video. I'd save up for the Zoom or one of the new Tascam recorders. In any case, you'll probably need to spend at least $90+ to get a decent sounding recorder.

    Tip #2 (at 1:02 and 1:34): Make sure your external audio recorder records at the same sampling rate as the camera (usually 48 KHz) to prevent audio drift! That was an eye-opener for me, thanks a lot!
    Big mystery solved! :)

    Wow, you have all the tough questions! ;-)
    This may be a case where you might try a different editor to see if it is an issue with the Lightworks.
    More likely it is the camera. Which camera are you using? Some tend to drift more than others. I have found my Zoom H1 to stay pretty well in sync with both my Nikon D600 and Canon 60D.
    I hope this helps a little. Good luck! Sync issues can be quite frustrating...

  • @curtisjudd
    @curtisjudd  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    @stanrose2 I would set the Zoom H4n to 48khz so that you can sync to the scratch audio you capture with the camera. That should avoid the drift issues.

  • @curtisjudd
    @curtisjudd  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @jackychanelectronics It depends on two main factors: The room that you're shooting in and how close you get the mic to your talent. I would NOT suggest recording into a camera without XLR connectors or a laptop--they both typically have very noisy audio circuitry and you end up with a messy, fuzzy sound. You're better off just getting the Zoom H1 within 12 inches of your talent. If the room has a lot of echo, then the lav definitely helps by getting the mic even closer to your talent.

  • @curtisjudd
    @curtisjudd  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    @sonicblast2404 I'm not sure but most software licenses allow that as long as you only use one at a time. You may need to wade through the license agreement.

    Hi! I haven't yet done any chroma-key with other cameras but my sense is that pretty much anything in the $1,000 USD and higher range will do pretty well. That isn't always an option, of course. I think that getting the lighting right is at least as important, possibly more important for good chroma-key work. Soon I'll have a review of a new lighting kit and I'll have to include a part on how it impacts green screen work.

    Can someone help? I have audio track extracted by a video. It´s a presentation. I want to dubb the entire presentation by replacing his voce by mine in another language . The point is: I do not want to open a new parallel audio track to record my voice. Instead of that, I want enjoy the same current track by only replacing phrase by phrase by my voice to keep the current sync with his mounth and lips moviments and silence parts. How can I do that?pls

  • @CIRCLEOFTONE
    @CIRCLEOFTONE 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is there a way to stop the time increments snapping to each frame? I’m trying to synchronize audio but when I drag wave file left or right it shifts to the next time frame. I think it’s every 10th of a second and I need at least 40th of a second to match wave files (external audio). I've removed the snap option and zoom in as far as I can. Great channel btw.

    I have two Sony A6300 for a multicam shoot. They have timecode on them. Timecode isn't good enough on it's own to sync audio on two cams but I use a Rodelink wireless system to send clean audio from the boom to my main cam1. And use the timecode to sync cam2 with cam1 which has the good audio from the boom. I then use 'sync using audio' in resolve to get a better match and fine tune manually. It works well and is a great way of syncing three bits of kit.

  • @curtisjudd
    @curtisjudd  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @jackychanelectronics You're not doing anything wrong--that is expected. Next you need to use an audio editing application to split the stereo track into two mono tracks and just keep the one with your voice. Audicity is free and do that for you. Then you bring your new mono track into your video editor and sync with your video. Best wishes!

    Thank you very much for giving us these editing tips for beginner, I am confused about one of the points, that is why the audio and video should maintain the same sampling rate, what if the audio is higher than the video sampling rate?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Technically it shouldn't matter. The reality is that some devices have clocks which drift quite quickly so even if the start of the clip is in sync, later in the clip, things can be out of sync.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      William De Vital I haven't done that before but I would try syncing and then exporting the new merged clips to a lossless format, perhaps using the "Match Source High Bitrate" preset. I'm not sure what that will do to the quality of the video--you will need to test that and tweak the bit rate settings but that would then allow you to delete the source files once you are happy with the quality of the exported, merged clip.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark, the first thing I would try (assuming you have Premiere Pro CC?) is to just highlight the audio tracks, right click, and choose merge. If you don't have Premiere Pro CC, I think this is a manual job. In Audition's multitrack view, I'd zoom way in and then nudge the tracks until their waveforms are aligned.
      By the way, what is recorded to the separate recorders? Different microphones for different people?

    Question: You say to sync the sample rates (48K) between the audio recorder and the video camera to avoid "audio drift". Would I be safe to assume that exact multiples of 48K (such as 96K or 192K) would work equally well? I like to use higher rates for my source recordings. Thanks.

    ie. camera has file name e.g. DC4_1234 and Zoom has audio track STE 003.
    I'm ending up with lots of files and I don't know which one belongs to which ?

      +MyPhotosForever Great question! This is really a workflow consideration. What I do is for longer pieces where I'm likely to end up with more than 10 or 15 clips of video and audio, I will usually keep a log (on an iPad or just paper). Then when I download all of the clips to my edit computer, I put all of the audio clips in one folder and all of the video clips in another. I then rename each file. I generally name them like this: 01 Intro, 02 Main for my primary footage and sound clips (i.e., the video clip and audio clip for the first clip both get the same name - 01 Intro). Then for B-roll or secondary footage that I will lay atop the primary footage, I'll usually start at 50. For pieces that will be longer with more than 100 clips, I'll number them 001, 002, etc. I'll plan to cover this in an upcoming episode because it is a great question!

    Hi Curtis;TY for your quick reply... even with 32mb memory, PP gives me an "out of memory" error message when I attempt to merge/sync the whole 1 hour tracks... (works great with a few seconds though)... Should have mentioned this.... I don't know why the memory is such a problem.... It's never been an issue before with PP or any other program...just this one function.... Am I doing something wrong?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm, I assume you mean 32GB. There are ways to allocate more RAM for Premiere under preferences but I'm not an expert on how that all works. May be best to contact Adobe for help on that. Sorry I couldn't help more.

    You are a life saver, did you record 2 separate audios of you clapping and then you recording the actual audio? Or did you do it all on one Audio and just cut them to separate them? I’m very new to this I understood the whole syncing part but did not understand where the audio of the clap came from. Please respond I appreciate it! Great content by the way!

    Hi Curtis, I have a problem with this, trying to sync recorded wav file in Premiere pro cc 2017 with audio from canon 6D, both are 48.000khz 16bit, but I can't get aligned the exact start frames for both, there is a one or two frame difference between these two audio files when I turn on both sources I hear two claps (or one and half) I tried to do this with all zoomed in timeline and snap turned off, anyways can't get to same line the both audios as you show here in 3:47 any tricks? ideas pls?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I got a little bit lucky here that they lined up so perfectly. There are many cases in Premiere where you cannot align them perfectly but should be able to get close enough (within one frame) so that when you mute the camera audio track, it should appear to be in sync. If the difference is more than one frame then there's something else going on.

      try multicam feature in premier pro cc. select both video and audio than rightclick and click on "creat multicam sequence". it sync well for videos from different cameras shot simultenously. i haven't tried it yet but might work for audio file and video file as well.
      sorry for my english :)

    Thanks Curtis great tutorial. I use DaVinci Resolve for video editing. My davinci tutor once mentioned using a time code generator for recorder and you should be able to sync video and audio easily. But I still have no idea how to embed time code into an audio recording using a device other than the recorder itself. Hey Curtis what is you opinion about using time code workflow for audio-video sync? Thanks

    • @curtisjudd

      @@gabrieldillaine2079 Not universally, no. If you're working on Multicam projects or you film 10s to 100s of takes in a single filming session, that's when timecode starts to make more sense.

    Sir ,
    Thank you , Great video. I have couple of doubts....
    Does the voice recorder with a lavalier gives better sound than a wireless microphone (i.e) Boya wm8 or sennheiser ? I'm about to setup a youtube channel , but on a tight budget . It could really save some bucks which I can use for lighting.
    Also how does this help on your day to day editing ... can you manage without any hassle or re-takes ?
    Thank you :)

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Krishnan, the Zoom H1 and lavalier reduces the risk of RF interference so from that standpoint it reduces retakes. I would avoid wireless unless you have a compelling need for it (e.g. you are live streaming so you cannot sync in post)

    Curtis, how would this work with recording a lecture or seminar? The clap probably wouldn't get picked up by both mics from a distance.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      A few options that spring to mind: Turn up the gain on your camera mic--you'd be surprised at how likely it is to pick up hand claps. But if not, look for some point in the video where there's a strong correlation between a sound and visual cue of some sort and sync using those points.

    Hi, Curtis. Suppose we have the sample rates matched, can audio drift still occur in very long takes, for example, ones that goes on for 3-4 hours?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, absolutely, especially with consumer grade cameras and recorders. Usually drifting occurs well before that. For long-form video, I highly recommend feeding audio from the mixer/recorder to the camera to avoid drift issues.

    And what would you recommend when syncing multiple audio sources against multiple video takes? i.e. Audio post-production for a TV series or film, where different takes are at hand for both audio and video. Thanks. Great video btw!

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Two main choices - Pluraleyes from Red Giant is the more expensive option but works well when you have a lot of clips. Other option is to organize your footage and audio files and do them one by one in Premiere. Tedious and time consuming but technically possible.

      Curtis Judd One more question. How do you usually request file delivery for large projects such as films or TV series? I'm about to start working on the audio post for a TV series, the video editors are asking how do I want the project delivered to work on it (xml, aaf, omf, separate audio and video files). Also, does the audio have to be already in sync with the video? Or is that the audio post-producer's job? Thanks again!

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** great question! If they have not begun editing/cutting, I'd usually just require the broadcast wav files. But in this case it sounds like they may already have a cut as they're offering the exchange format files (XML, AAF, OMF). So it depends on what you'll be using to do the audio processing. I haven't done this a lot but here's a blog with some interesting insights on the difference between OMF and AAF: soundslikejoe.com/omf-aaf-tutorial/

    I currently record videos on my mobile device, the OnePlus 3. According to online sources, the OnePlus 3 records at bitrate 54mbps.
    That said, and forgive me if this is a stupidly worded question, is that the bitrate I would set the Zoom H1 to?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Edward Lamadrid not a stupid question at all. That bit rate refers to video compression and doesn't impact the audio settings. If in doubt, set the H1 to 24 bit, 48 kHz. Best wishes!

    This is a great video. Thanks for sharing the knowledge.
    I have an upcoming Church event "sermon"
    where i need to shoot video and capture the audio by connecting my laptop directly to the audio mixer in the media room.
    The laptop will take internal audio from the mixer directly (inside the media room)
    And
    The camera will be mounted on top of the tripod inside the church
    So my question is, how can i produce the clap to Sync ?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Emad Kamel This is a case where you'll probably need to rely on Premiere to sync. When shooting with the camera, make sure it is getting a good audio capture (set your gain so that the audio peaks hit somewhere around -12 to -10dB) and even without the clap, Premiere can usually automatically sync the laptop recording to the video. Best wishes!

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lee, I don't think it is possible to change the sample rate on your phone. iPhone 6 records the audio with video at 44.1 kHz (same for all iPhones, I believe) so what you may want to do is change the sample rate on your Zoom H1 to 44.1 kHz.
