Anyone who wants to try this. Cool the sugar solution first. The moisture in the chamber condenses as the air is Evacuated. It’s also going into the vacuum pump. I know that because I did it and seized my pump with rust. Pump is ok now after I pulled it down and cleaned out the rust. Be careful.

I'm afraid I would be noodling every day. Do you have a video showing the cutting of one of these chunks of concrete?

Interesting video and I say hello to you from a not so cold Sweden! We have 8 degrees warm today with clouds ⛅ and the occasional ray of sun 🌞 peeking out as well as a bit of rain 🌧 who drizzle down too! Take care and I wish you good luck, Susanne.

G’day Susanne, a bit of sunshine is always good, we’ll be getting a bit too much soon but last few days have been awesome. Stay safe 🤪👍

@@theopalmills Hej ( G'day on Swedish)! Yes you have Summer there and we have Winter. In the southwest of Sweden we don't get a real Winter with snow very often but in the north of my elongated country they had -27,2 degrees a few nights ago. Up there they will have polar night too with no light at all and in the Summer they have the Midnight Sun 24/7. Take care, Susanne!👋😊❤👍

Nice play on cold chisel. You need some of the anti fog for glasses to put on that vacuum chamber lid

It didn’t click till after, but in the spirit of ribena, my dad bought some cheap cask wine to try, that would’ve been a better moment 🤣👍

Thanx for that Phil. There’s a lady close to me. She’s selling a chunk of concrete with nice bars running through it. I don’t know how to price it though. It probs weigh about 2/250g and a third of it is already totally black right through. And what is the difference between hard and concrete matrix? I love that piece with the awesome corner. I noticed that you hesitated when you did the before shot. I was keen to see how it turned out treated. Can not wait to see how it cuts! Please show us how it comes out when it is cut. Must be cool to know you’ll make something and get some really nice cut stones to the point that you’ll make a GOOD profit.

G’day Matthew, concrete can go from $0.10/g to$1-1.50/g in the rough, depending on the potential. The difference between concrete and hard matrix is the host rock, where concrete as a more coarse, granular make up giving it a higher porosity, making it harder to get a decent polish, hence it may require a resin treatment, as opposed to hard matrix where I’m not quite sure of the host rock, it may just be a finer grain, but it’s more saturated in opal yet still porous, the glassier it’s gets the harder it is to treat due to a finer porosity, though this makes for a higher polish. Creativity is a fantastic pass time. 🤪👍

I wonder why you can see the colour before the sugar has been carbonized (is that a word? You know what mean, Phil) Are you going to get anymore boulder on your web store, Phil, what about some untreated matrix so we can enjoy following your instructions and seeing these results for ourselves, all around the World. Your videos are the best and I think that andamooka matrix is the most bang for the buck that a poor opal lover could possibly get. I'd love to see more videos about different types of it. I'd also love to have access to it, in your store, (hint hint) I don't want any of the material being sold on Facebook that is full of blackened pebbles, it looks like man made concrete and I think that stuff is why some people don't appreciate matrix opal. Sorry, Phil. I tried not to comment anymore because I talk too much.....But that's what I have been thinking. ;)

Treated matrix will fluoresce under black light, in normal lighting it does look gray/graphite, I’m hoping it will treat darker next time, to make the colour contrast better. 🤪👍

Have u tried the old miners way, they got more colours out of the stones, u know what I'm talking about. Have fun.

Instead of using a hot water sugar solution to soak and treat the Opal have you tried heating up a Coca-Cola solution and vacuum sucking the air out to see if it makes any difference ??

I'm not sure what is going on here.what is the liquid

    • @theopalmills

G’day mate, in Andamooka we get what’s called a matrix opal, which means a (pre-existing) host rock was filled with opal. With Andamooka hard matrix, it’s a limestone host rock. For the most part these are quite porous, yet will take a great polish. Raw matrix is usually in a light coloured host rock and the colour of the opal may or may not even be seen when dry, but once you wet it the colour becomes visible/more visible. To help contrast the colour better, we figured out that we can darken the stone helping the colours to stand out more. We call this a treatment, which is to get carbon to fill in to the pores of the stone. Sugar has a high carbon content making it ideal to use (sugar water mix) in liquid form to boil the sugar into the stone. Sugar is comprised of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms arranged in a certain molecular structure, we now need to remove the hydrogen and oxygen, leaving the carbon behind. This can be done either with heat, to burn the sugars in the stone, I don’t like this method, or, by cooking it in sulphuric acid which will boil off the hydrogen and oxygen in a chemical reaction, leaving the carbon behind to blacken/darken the stone. I hope this helps. 🤪👍

Not sure how interested you are in showing the bubbling inside the vacuum chamber. But if you wanted to do it in the future, just get a couple of magnets. Put one inside the lid, and one outside the lid. They have to be strong enough magnets to attract one another through the glass. When the lid gets fogged up, just scrub the moisture away with the magnets. Like an aquarium scrubber.

For some reason only ever get one really good go at vacuuming this stuff down. Any interruption and for some reason the escape of air from the matrix doesn’t get really going again.
Pull it down to minus 1atm in one go and then leave for 30 minutes seems about the most effective 🌈👍

G’day Affan, both liquids start out clear, first is the sugar/water solution that goes black after a while, the next is sulphuric acid, this also turns black after a while. 🤪👍
