    Just curious, how much of your day is spent doing work? Do you have a lot of free time and are you basically allowed to wander anywhere you feel like?

      Yes I can wander around basically anywhere and her work days are 8 hours each day and overtime is available as well but not mandatory

    What is the strangest thing you've seen in the middle of the ocean.

    • @jefferyb.3406
      @jefferyb.3406 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well if I have to think about it probably a long time ago I saw a few strange things in the night sky because I always go outside at night and watch the Stars and I've seen a couple different things that are definitely not conventional aircraft but exactly what it is there's no way to say but it was not an airplane or a shooting star or a meteor that's for sure..... one time I saw this big streak in the sky I don't know how to explain it it wasn't like a bright light it almost looked like you took a paint brush and brush 2 stroke in the sky but it was sort of curved and it was not a cloud I have no idea what it could have been

    My dad worked in shipping all his life and arranged for me to work on Hapag Lloyd's Main Express as a deck hand when I was 18 years old. We sailed between Oakland, via Long Beach, Panama, to Felixstowe on a trip that took just under a month. Your videos bring back some amazing memories so thank you for sharing.

    How long does it take your ship to cross the Atlantic?
    In land measurements, what speed does the ship cruise at? I guess 30 mph?

    Imagine crossing that ocean in a wooden sailboat , and not knowing what is on the other side , or how far it is. 250 years ago.

    I know I'm going to get the safety sally label here, but I would think a Union trade would have more safety awareness than that. Especially on the high seas where medical and fire rescue is not available. You need to wear safety glasses under your helmet as sparks can rebound around inside your helmet. Also when you clean hot slag off your welds. You should also have a fire watch with you with an extinguisher in hand. You had a lot of flammables near you, especially that rope. Also, you are in a confined area, so ventilation is important.

    The scenes on the bridge reminded me when I finished my shift, closed down the club and after all it was late and I had something like 4 hours to go before docking and having a 2 week leave, instead have a few hours of sleep, I made myself a sandwich, settled down, got my uniform off, a shower and getting civilian clothe on and hung out at the bridge. Seeing the day break as we reached the argipelago of Stockholm was always a treat. As we reached the port, I grabbed my gear, drove home and sleep over the day. Funny, how the toassed time becomes a piece of nostalgia.

    shipmate, I heard that a merchant vessel has Deck and Engine departments....is there any equivalent of an Electronics Technician in the Navy, who concentrates on electronics? A lot of what you're doing here is the job of "A-Gang" on a submarine (I was on a submarine)...A-Gang because they are "Auxiliary Machinist Mate" (as opposed to nuclear machinist mate); they deal with all the non-nuclear machinery such as as the diesel backup engine, the high pressure air compressors, the ship service hydraulic system, etc. Whereas I was a STS, sonar technician submarines. I operated sonar as my main job (though I did many other things since there are only 120 people on the boat). So do you guys have specialties like that? Or is it really just Deck does everything forward of the Engine Room and Engine does everything in the Engine Room?

      well we have a 3 color card system...green, red, and yellow. Green is good weather, yellow is a little worse so need carry radio and red is off deck unless necessary and would need to call bridge to nitify when going out nd back in and also carry ships radio.

    Way too many random questions! You never mentioned just what your job title was, are you the chief engineer or something?For the electrical I'd like to know how the 480 gets broken down to 240 and 110. You showed great what the engine looked like but it'd also be interesting to know what the different components are since it's so different from a normal engine I can't recognize them all. You mentioned doing some overtime, what's the standard schedule without overtime and how often does it come up? Do you have to spend any money inside the ship ever and is alcohol banned? Do they move the clocks for the time zones too?

    • @jefferyb.3406
      @jefferyb.3406 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I am the qmed maintenance in the engineering department and yes we change the clocks frequently to get on the time schedule of where we are going to be in the next part. Yes alcohol is technically band I'm bored with my company and as far as overtime it is available but not mandatory
