RisingStart It was a crumbling city. Before 1946 it was considered best Asian city. With great universities, well managed society and many great scholars. This city produced 6 Nobel prize winners and 2 great scientist didn't get their due recognition - like Jagdish Chandra Bose, satyendra Nath Bose. In 1946 when British decided to give India freedom Muslims in India wanted a new nation for themselves. To force their demand in august 1946, 6000 Hindus were slaughtered in Kolkata. Roads were filled with dead bodies. As a result India was divided and Pakistan was formed. Due to this Kolkata lost it's charm. Most of the Bengali intellectual Hindus left India and migrated to other countries or in other cities in India. Now a days this city is growing and slowly coming to its previous glory days. This video is around 10 years old and as someone who grew up in Kolkata I can say that modern Kolkata is really resurrecting itself. PS : another mistake we made in1970 is we elected a communist govt. That cost us a lot development wise.

At that time, roads were full of trams.. And 90% of the trafic was made by the yellow taxis.. Trams were so regular at that time..
