The saying is "use things, love people", but the Lisbon tram is one of the lasting loves of my life - and I'm so happy to make good use of it whenever I'm in town.

V good video. I spent 5 days in Lisbon last year much of it on the trams. My wife was not impressed! Lisbon in not flat but these agile 4 wheel trams go everywhere at some speed. Other cities could learn a lot from this amassing network.

Maravilhoso.

They were built in the 1930s and updated in the 1990s.
The pantograph is used when they are not in use in the narrow Alfama, i.e. on line 15 or on their way to the tram depot.

These trams where built between 1994 & 1994 reusing shells from older cars built between 1932 & 1940 (all else is new). The cars have both pantograph 6 trolly. In routes 12 & 28 only the trolley can be used becuase teher are parts where the aereal cables are not adapted for pantograph operation (in case of route 28 there's a veranda in the narrow section of single track that doesn't provide enoough clearence for the pantograph arches)

And I love them for doing that. Even when it comes to switching to new chassis to allow for near floor entrances (which is important for the elderly and mobility impaired), cities could easily maintain the appearance of their medieval and early modern city cores by designing the new chassis akin to the old style, but they almost always go with the futuristic UFO look (e.g. Combino). It's like plopping a concrete skyscraper into an old town. s:

And did you know that it isn't even an actual stop?
The tram drivers stop there because it's convenient, but there is no sign or anything... isn't that great?!

Cidade antiga é difícil de conservar. Haja tutu.
