I have seen this great city since I born in late 50's. I can steel remember that clean city where roads and footpath were washed with high force water supplied from Hoogly river's through countless hydrants at 04-30 to 05-00 am by Calcutta Corporation people, everyday. By the time vehicle movement starts at 06-00 am roads are dried up. I am talking about entire southern Calcutta & Saheb para, means Esplanade, New Market surroundings, Dalhousie(BBD Bag), Park Street, Theatre road, Central Avenue etc.
There was no hawkers encroachment at footpath. It was unthinkable then. The deteriorations starts after Partition, true but started actually with moderate force at mid late 70's with the political patronage & collection system. Slowly but steadily they engulfed all the footpaths by 2000. Now the appearance of Kolkata is a city with it's ugly black plastic sheet top covered
hawkers shop covering 80% of foot path,20% is left for customers not foe pedestrians. Gone all the grass topped boulevard between road and footpath of south Calcutta and other areas. Gone those Single & Double Dekker red & blue colour Govt. buses. Good old Trams, they runs over there separate high from road Tram ways with good speed.
We learnt scooter riding on good old Lambretta scooter in early 70's & the traffic of those days were so less compare to present day, it was dream. Car on late 70's on good old Ambassador car with steering mounted gear lever. Petrol was 3-00 to 3-50 rupees per liter from SHELL pumps. There was no HP, BP, IOL pumps. Paradise lost .

In the name of poor’s welfare the world class city was turned to trash and filthy city by allowing footpaths encroachment. Food items are cooked on footpaths, dishes are washed, clothes are hung in the partitions of the roads. Spitting is a regular occurrence. Honking and shouting screaming are absolutely necessity by all the drivers. The whole city looks 3rd grade, with tarpaulins. And Mamta Banerjee was will not do anything.

These tin clad private buses have been biggest eyesores on Kolkata road transport history. Worst on comfort, worst on design, travelling in one of these used to one of the most repulsive experiences I could ever imagine.
Although not a big fan of Dr Manmohan Singh's policies, he at least made one thing correct. After the introduction of JNNURM in 2007-08, gradually Kolkata roads were able to shred off these awful public carriers. Among many other changes, this is one change that as a Kolkatan, I welcomed wholeheartedly.

At that time Ambassador car used to be the king of the Indian roads and then only few car in India used to be seen like Ambassador, Fiat, Contessa, Maruti 800, Maruti van and Maruti jeepsee.
However, at that time our country had been much backward in all respects but many businesses used to be in good condition.

@@ranjittyagi9354 yes very much. I am not one who is blindly nostalgic. I was born and brought up in Kolkata. The late 1980s Kolkata traffic was horrible. Looked ugly with those ramshackle ambassadors and buses. Yes there were more quality public figures (Satyajit Ray was still alive) but the city was already in decadence. Kolkata is a much cleaner city today.

. . . And the Maruti 800 was gradually sucking the pie. Even knowing that, - only because of the foolish the then red bulls' unionism, Hind Motors failed in Darwin's fitness - hence as usual got extinct.
Myself alongwith my boosom school friends were taking our by-cycle rides seldom inside the factory premises ( outer part ). Had seen many times that 400 / 500 new cars were there in the ramp for despatch.
Gradually the ramp became empty. And probably around 1995 /96 we were able to take our bycycle rides to the inside vast premises too. . The ghostly unit was beholding its own skeletons of the giant machinearis.
And the history repeated by the predecessor in 2009 with Tata in the seed stage.
Alas ! We are no where in the progress. We are 100 years behind.

pathetic, if you want to see how the world was in 80s see videos of NYC 🇺🇸 or london not kolkata or Calcutta yuck 🤢😂
