I can steel remember that clean city where roads and footpath were washed with high force water supplied from Hoogly river's through countless hydrants at 04-30 to 05-00 am by Calcutta Corporation people, everyday. By the time vehicle movement starts at 06-00 am roads are dried up. I am talking about entire southern Calcutta & Saheb para, means Esplanade, New Market surroundings, Dalhousie(BBD Bag), Park Street, Theatre road, Central Avenue etc. There was no hawkers encroachment at footpath. It was unthinkable then. The deteriorations starts after Partition, true but started actually with moderate force at mid late 70's with the political patronage & collection system. Slowly but steadily they engulfed all the footpaths by 2000. Now the appearance of Kolkata is a city with it's ugly black plastic sheet top covered hawkers shop covering 80% of foot path,20% is left for customers not foe pedestrians. Gone all the grass topped boulevard between road and footpath of south Calcutta and other areas. Gone those Single & Double Dekker red & blue colour Govt. buses. Good old Trams, they runs over there separate high from road Tram ways with good speed. We learnt scooter riding on good old Lambretta scooter in early 70's & the traffic of those days were so less compare to present day, it was dream. Car on late 70's on good old Ambassador car with steering mounted gear lever. Petrol was 3-00 to 3-50 rupees per liter from SHELL pumps. There was no HP, BP, IOL pumps. Paradise lost .

They are also deliberately create obstruction in front of tax paying genuine traders shop. But who cares so long daily collections are coming. That is the game.

In the name of poor’s welfare the world class city was turned to trash and filthy city by allowing footpaths encroachment. Food items are cooked on footpaths, dishes are washed, clothes are hung in the partitions of the roads. Spitting is a regular occurrence. Honking and shouting screaming are absolutely necessity by all the drivers. The whole city looks 3rd grade, with tarpaulins. And Mamta Banerjee was will not do anything.
Kolkata has changed from that time. Now you will see less rented cars, less buses, more traffic jams, polices collecting money at signals to meet their target to be donated to local party office

These tin clad private buses have been biggest eyesores on Kolkata road transport history. Worst on comfort, worst on design, travelling in one of these used to one of the most repulsive experiences I could ever imagine. Although not a big fan of Dr Manmohan Singh's policies, he at least made one thing correct. After the introduction of JNNURM in 2007-08, gradually Kolkata roads were able to shred off these awful public carriers. Among many other changes, this is one change that as a Kolkatan, I welcomed wholeheartedly.
There's been a lot of changes on the roads in Kolkata other than those red and gold colored mini busses which haven't changed in more than 35 years. Furthermore, the roads in 1989 looked more dusty and congested than now.
Striking are everything. The orange color S buses, tata 1210 public buses, hindustan truck, maruti 800, large headed maruti van and the evergreen amby taxies.

Even knowing that, - only because of the foolish the then red bulls' unionism, Hind Motors failed in Darwin's fitness - hence as usual got extinct. Myself alongwith my boosom school friends were taking our by-cycle rides seldom inside the factory premises ( outer part ). Had seen many times that 400 / 500 new cars were there in the ramp for despatch. Gradually the ramp became empty. And probably around 1995 /96 we were able to take our bycycle rides to the inside vast premises too. . The ghostly unit was beholding its own skeletons of the giant machinearis. And the history repeated by the predecessor in 2009 with Tata in the seed stage. Alas ! We are no where in the progress. We are 100 years behind.

Seeing this, traffic situation has improved now is what I feel.
