I was 11 years old in November of 1991 when I went with my dad to buy a 1992 4wd model, ruby mica was the color and he was the first person in the area with one and boy people were jealous. Having a Mazda mpv back then was just like owning a range rover or Toyota land Cruiser because that how popular and sought after they were. Good times man good effing times. I wish I could go back.

Mazda needs to bring these back. Part time 4 wheel drive, good ground clearance, and like WuTang every week we make 40 G's. I had a 1996 MPV 4WD and it was great

I've always liked minivans. If I were in the market back then, I'd probably have cross-shopped it with an Astro, GM Dustbuster vans, Aerostar, Toyota van or Caravan. The Mazda MPV was definitely unique among minivans. I appreciate it more now than when it was new.

I don't like sliding doors. The MPV was one of the greatest vehicles ever conceived. I wish there was one in 2024. I would make it about 11 inches longer than the original or 186 inches. Then the wheelbase about 4 inches longer, from 110 inches to 114 inches long. I would definitely keep the door configuration as having no backdoor behind the driver added strength to the overall structure of the vehicle, reduced weight and added safety as rearseat passengers had to exit onto the sidewalk and not into moving traffic: brilliant! Mazda's current 2.5L and 6 speed automatic transmission would make for a slightly quicker vehicle while at the same time 30% more economical. The original MPV was so versatile. Great for taking kids to school, roomy enough for most of the basketball team, road trips, off road trips and overnight camping. Ingress and egress was much better than today's oversized SUVs. Lastly, Mazda listens to their customers more than nearly any automotive company. 😊

My father had a 4wd model and I hated it b/c I was young and stupid. Now I realize this was the best mini van at the time. It had 4wd that could be engaged on the fly while driving and seated 8.
This would be a great van if they made it again. That 3 door model made it solid. Plus the 4wd system was simple to work and had a differential setting to get a 50/50 traction drive from the front and rear wheels.

My mom had one when I was growing up, the whole family loved every minute of owning it, and we had it for a very long time.
We even towed with it on a regular basis. We'd have the van packed with people and a trailer packed full of camping gear, and it did great.

Have you noticed that MotorWeek attempts to not piss off the car makers that sponsor them bye not rating the cars equally? Some of the car's braking tests are from 0 to 50 mph and some are 0 255. Mazda must not have greased enough Palms cuz they were judged from 0 to 60 mph

Ugh, had one of these as my mom's car in the 1990s. I'm convinced now that we had a lemon but as information wasn't as available back then as it is now we didn't know.
Constant transmission leakage and the car never wore the tires evenly require many many wheel alignments. Battery never could last over a year because probably had alternator problems and the lack of power was just silly. The engine sounded like a tank above 3k RPM and provided no actual acceleration.
Still it served us for about 8 years before we switched to the 2000 honda odyssey and that's still running fine to this day.
