K20 Swapped Honda Del Sol Review - 9500rpm INSANITY

- This is the craziest Honda I have ever driven, bar none. DeeJay's 1997 Honda Del Sol is a Frankenstein "sleeper" build, featuring a JDM DC5 Integra Type R K20A motor at its heart. VTEC kicks in at just 4000 rpm. It wails like a banshee to 9500 rpm. And with ultra short gearing, there's no CHANCE you'll ever fall out of VTEC. Marry the engine/drivetrain to a short wheelbase, manual steering, and a huge list of supporting mods, and the result is one INSANE FWD beast.

Bruh I expected this man to have a deep voice.
Mo-ron
So did I
That k20swap does all the taking boy
This was a treat seeing a nicely setup Del Sol in person. it was a pleasure meeting you guys too! -guy with the same jacket 😂
Dude.. you gotta rebuild your suspension 😂 that steering had more slop than a bathroom at a brothel 😳
Its a dx rack thats how they are its not the suspension
@@lollol-xp4mc cap that's on the suspension
first few seconds sold me on the k20 engine, I want
James Fonda gatta love k series..but you can make the same amount of power for cheaper with a b20vtec setup or h2b setup.
dannyb20 vtec I don't care about the power it's the rpm range that matters
James Fonda my F20 makes powet till 8750 reliably. Hows that for rev range.
preludeF20Bking that's pretty darn good lol about 3000 more than my car will do but yeah when you get into those rpms it doesn't matter about power to me. my car has around 220 and basically tops out at 5500-6000 and it cares so much about tempurature
dannyb20 vtec fuck that j35 swap
Rich Chigga driving a K20 Del Sol lol
Yo im weak 😂
Yes ive been waiting for this review!
beautifully built del sol, owner seems like a cool guy too
5k in a Honda will put you around 500-800 hp he puts 30k in a Honda and gets a little over 200hp 🤦🏽♂️
T AND A FAM exactly what I was thinking.
Ya I dunno what happened. Literally just bought a 95 si. For $1000 and it runs and drives fineeeeee
Not hard when he has more money than sense and mechanical ability. He's paying a shop to do everything for him. People try and buy their way into scenes every day.
What are those upgrades for 5k? Im new lol
Hes a real driver and goes to the track with it 500hp doesnt get you far at the track with a honda plus cooling issues. 5k into a turbo car wouldnt even last a lap on track this car is a true track car not a lame drag car
Del Sol would be an all time legend, if only it was RWD with lsd. Such a shame
mr2 :-p
$30,000??!!! and then as I watched the video I realized I couldn't stop smiling at how dope this thing must be.
K series engine in these cars are tooo much! Great car and owner!
the del sol frame was reinforced in certain areas because it is built like a rwd roadster.
Sick build and Im totally with the whole underdog statement when it comes to Hondas.
I see calaveras, felter, and sierra summit! bay area represent! 👍🏽👍🏽
bad ass that he's revving to 9500 rpm, but with a proper tune he should be able to make the same amount of power at a lower rpm with a much more useable power band.. also depends on his cam profile and compression too..for example my buddy had a type R setup revving to 9k and made 230+ HP ...then he got a re tune by church automotive and made the same power at 79k rpm..much more reliable and efficient..great video and car, just my 2 cents..also idk if I missed it, but if you have crazy torque steer, remove power steering it helps a lot! and moving VTEC to a lower rpm will not always make more power..you want to put VTEC right after peak torque.. people think the lower you put it,the better..not true..
Yeah for K20 usually after a good tune it seems the best rpm for VTEC usually around 4800rpm. Any lower than 4500rpm starts having a negative effect on power band.
@@AnonX-jk3zu i think 4500 is the sweet spot even when force induction
That´s what I call some serious torque steer :), gotta love that sound though. No I keep my B16.
buddys so right on and cool about u ripping his car ! awesome review and sick delsol
Sleeper Honda! What's good!
Such a humble owner 👌
Most fun you can have in a FWD car right there! Great video and car!
Worth every penny. 😎👍
Is a K20 swap possible into the base model D15 del sol? It's 200+ lbs lighter, stock, than the B16 trim.
OF COURSE DUDE....WHY WOULD YOU THINK OTHERWISE
LSX KING LOL
of course it's possible, it'll just be a lot more involved than d or b swap
Awesome car and awesome owner. Might end up in one of these in the future. Something about them...
Diarmuid Marsden agreed. owner was a cool dude
That car is insane
That thing is nuts.
Cool car and owner.
What has been done for 9.5k rev limit? Engine doesn't seem to have been touched.
Thank you for not using the go pro strapped to your head. Much better video 👍👍
Some people like it, some don't. Can't please em all... :)
David Cobb I like the head cam!
Neat.
I want to buy this sol
I love this man ❤
My crvtec del sol has crazy torque steer like that too. Really sucks sometimes.
Looks like it needs something done with the TPS or TB, maybe even tuning related, my RSX had this issue sometimes to the point of my gas pedal not working, the jerkiness caused me to break motor mounts even. Other than that, sweet car.
The homie deejay!
What kinda shifter is that? Looks kool
Zygrene, did DJ ever got that steering problem (steering likes to wonder) fixed? id like to know if he did because my delsol likes to wonder ALOT just like his lol. Thanks!
AWESOME.
Are these the Calveras back roads?
nice this is a car that's done right
Nice!!!
Beast
9,500 RPM of JDM V-Tech insanity... Orgasmic! To do it justice though, please dial out that torque steer a bit and control that beast. ;o) I know, easier said than done. Love this car.
Thanks dude!
SleeperHonda. I know with a car like yours, there is no such thing as "finished". That's the fun of it, and also the hell of it. My cheeks involuntarily twitched into a smile when you said, "This car means everything to me." Also when you mentioned the underdog thing and said "I kinda like make'n people upset." No better drug on the planet than seeing that WTF look on someones face who thought their car was fast. God speed brother.
Thanks brother!
DeeJay, Datsun510zen is the owner of the "Fully Built 330hp Datsun 510" I reviewed a while back. Check out that video, you'll enjoy it. :)
I wonder if his Del Sol K20A can beat his NSX on the track?!
If the NSX stays stock, I would think the del sol wins!
where did he get that bar behind the seats/
I'mma stick with my 245k mile $1000 del sol
Bought one at 201k miles and told the wife when the engine goes I'm gonna swap it. Drove it like a rented mule and finally gave it to a friend at 421k 2 years ago - engine never died. Still on the road btw. Just bought the wife an auto del sol and thinking of the b18c swap for her as a present :)
Take that man to a class about sticky tires
Awesome👍🏾
Currently have this cars targa sitting on my sol
Daaaaaaam!
He sounds like the gay man on family guy who says ‘Ohh Nooo’
Bruce?
To each their own
Any stock Del Sols anywhere?
I have one 😳🤫 204k miles on the d16. Probably wont be stock for much longer. Maybe another year or so.😊
30 grand for 220whp? I'm doubting it
Trust me the car has seen about 30k go in and out of it. I didn't build this car to make crazy numbers. Its all build from OEM and Custom parts.
SleeperHonda awesome car man
babyjoker360 the wheels alone are like 3500 bucks
Lol, yeah. it doesn't take long before you realize how much you've spent...
SleeperHonda I'm not bashing on his build. I can see how he took a different route instead of making it a drag car. Nonetheless it's a sweet ride, looks hella fun and the owner seems like a cool dude. Can't wait to see the nsx though
$30k? did you take a mortgage out on this thing?
Must be loaded
He said he just bought an NSX. I'm sure he's well-off.
Vopal orale homie gee
👤👥...................🤗
What year is that sol
It doesn't sound like real 9500rpm, at all......
Looks like the motor was being babied on the pulls.
what is that for exhaust ?
*Eurobeat intensifies*
Hey Zygrene, nice video!
Just a few things I wanted to mention, the owner talked about "the reinforced rear subframe giving it a better 50/50 weight ratio" at 5:00, wtf did he mean by that?
Also, you said it puts only 156 lbs ft of torque to the wheels, you kind of forgot about the gearing there!
For wheel torque, you always have to remember to multiply the engine torque by the total gear ratio, that means torque x gear ratio x final drive,
so 156 lbs ft x 3.266 x 4.764 = 2427.24 lbs ft in first gear,
1582.98 lbs ft in second gear and so on.
Stock NSX NA1 with its longer gearing puts down 210 lbs ft x 3.071 x 4.062 = 2619.62 lbs ft in first,
1473.17 lbs ft in second.
So you see, that Del Sol has higher wheel torque than an NSX in second gear, combine with that the lighter weight, narrow tires and fwd layout, and it is no wonder it spins its tires.
If you want to reduce torque steer on a FWD car, you have to go for a narrower front track width (use higher insert wheels), which in turn reduces front cornering grip - so that's a compromise you need to find for yourself there.
Its the biggest factor in why the 97 VTEC chassis is so much heavier then the 93 S. Its a thing bro!
I guess what he meant then is that weight distribution changed a bit, not that it became 50:50. I guess that's a thing, but are there any hard numbers on subframe weights though? Didn't find anything on the internet about that, only that the 97 VTEC is supposed to weigh 2522 lbs and the S 2277 lbs. I have not driven both kinds of Del Sol, but I doubt that a small difference in weight distribution makes a big difference in straight line stability, there are other factors like bushing health, toe settings, tires, aerodynamic lift and sway bar size which make a noticeable difference.
HolySteel I think your confused about wheel torque. Chassis dynos measure hp and torque at the wheels typically in 4th or 5th gear, whichever one is closest to 1:1 ratio. So for this car if it has 156 wheel tq in 5th for example then we divide 3.266 by .972 (fifth gear ratio) and get 3.36. So 3.36 times 156 is 524 max wheel tq in 1st gear.
Jonathan, you still need to consider final drive ratio, if your engine just had 156 at the wheels with .972 5th ratio, the engine itself would only have ~33 lbs ft of torque, which it doesn't.
220 to the wheels is great for a car that light I love the build but wheels rubbing is unexceptional to me especially with adjustable struts but other than that I'm in love
Amazing car but one thing I would like to say is that this is a K20A from a FD2 Civic Type R which comes with the RRC manifold. I personally own the K20A from the DC5 Integra Type R. It has a different style manifold called the PRC.
It's possible he could have gotten dc5 and swapped the manifold. K20a is the shit.
That steering wheel shaking is just TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!!!!! FIX THAT SHIT DUDE....YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF WITH THE LEVEL OF THAT BUILD TO HAVE IT SHAKE LIKE THAT!!!
Del sol owner wish I could get hold this guy
What size of tires are you running this beauties 😍
He spent $30,000 seems way to high swapped my civic for less then $4,000 with k20z1...unless he paid a shop to do all the work even then that's a high price tag.
Not 30k on just the swap. 30k on everything. There's hardly a part on the car that hasn't been touched.
Similar money went into my K20a2 swapped Sol but as mentioned above this includes full makeover including repaint, wire tuck, s2000 clocks, seats, forged wheels and a dozen of other parts. - all original no fakes.
car has expensive parts on it. the rims and tires alone goes for a few grand already.
expanse ek24 he did way back ..
Why does he keep saying torque steer, heaven forbid he drive something that actually torque steers.
there is a guy who swapped a k20a type r in his nsx. it is friggin sick. I'm not a huge fan of the del sol chasis, but this is a cool build.
Awesome, and he just bought my dream car NSX! Review that one at some point as well.
awesome package but needs a decent catback. sounds so rice
You should really do this videos on Highway 35
I envy this guy ill neve know what my car feels like as a passenger cause non of the people i trust have the money to replace it if they crash it 🤣
☠️
Mean azz del sol
no power steering or AC?
It doesn't come with power steering
Jonas Martinez yes it does lmfao the fuck
Randolph Haber mine doesn’t
The torque and HP numbers seem really low. Surprising.
Higgy not to me. It ran 12s
I’m not British but the only word I can think of is “Mental”
I just bought one
I want the same motor but in a Sw20
fuck yes
Needs a better exhaust. But amazing swap love the rims.
Every time I thought about putting a b18 or k20 in a del sol I realized that it would be better to just get an S2000.
For all that money and headache yes. Its better to just get the s2000. But its also nice that everybody thinks that you have a d16
dude you spent 30 grand on a honda.... i would've dropped 30 grand into a dam supra mk4
Yea and it would be beat with plenty of miles. You can't touch a clean one without spending $50k.
Everyone has their passions
9500, doubt it makes any power on stock motor with boltons
these del sol dont looks awsome, but seems to be a pretty funny car. like a miata or a 1st gen mr2 but fwd.
They dont look awesome straight out the box, def takes a little work. Didnt help that I lost my front lip 2 weeks before this shoot. My car was lookin super stock.. haha..
SleeperHonda my brother had a civic with the d17 (em2 i think...). he puts couple of things like fogs lights and some plastics things over the side and rear windows. His car was nice after couple of mods, like your del sol.
Cebastien Larochelle i rather have this than most rwd cars
preludeF20Bking i totally agree with you!
front wheel drive beginner car instantly .
Is this a rip off of smoking tire one take?
9500RPM on stock bottom+top and oil pump? Lol glhf.
Isn't it sad that the guy didn't even get to drive his own car and just sat back while you cooked his mounts with your shocking pedal work lol you should be passenger man, no good.
that exhaust sounds horrible
30k in it and it drives like SHIT.....what a shame
-the owner said the guy drives the car good when the guy is terrible at driving it.
-i have never seen a car ride so rough (you would have serious back problems daily driving that car)
-the k series has a 2 stage vtec. 3000rpm and 6000rpm.
-its RPM! (revolutions per minute) not "rpms" (revolutions per minutes)
Bradley Hall a k series doesnt have 2 stage vtec. for 1 it has I vtec and 2 it has vtc and engagement of i-vtec at 5800rpm
Robert P and fyi it DOES have 2 stages. I might be wrong on the exact rpm in which it engages, but that's besides the point. it adjusts timing then engages. have you ever driven anything with a k series? you would know this if you have.
Bradley Hall ivtec is not the same as it has nothing to do with oil pressure or cam lobes. I have a jdm k20a 05 integra with ivtec under 2300 RPM it runs on 1 intake valve and 2 exhaust when "ivtec" kicks in it opens up another intake valve to 2 intake 2 exhaust. ivtec is a fuel economy version. this is a type r red top so it has the traditional oil pressure, VTEC solenoid system.
jcwat I think you need to look into it a bit more. I've installed cams and valvetrain in many ivtec heads and the majority runs off additional loabs (vtec loabs) when vtec engages....
jcwat the difference between ivtec and vtec is ivtec has an oil pressure system that allows the cam gears to adjust timing. That system with the addition of vtec is Ivtec
They keep bringing up Christ! Ps.. look up Gene kim n Chuck missler on TH-cam
That boss kit too long, and go find back the centre wheel cap lol
See Teck Seng - too long?....too long for who?
awful shifting there buddy. haha.
Yeah I botched the first 1-2 shift on the long straight. Shifter takes some getting used to.
you can't shift boi. terrible driving
Mai Le deadass this guy can’t drive for shit lmao
This exhaust sounds like shit...
30k for 220whp what a rip off
Not always about money to hp ratio...
GEAR HEAD 30k into the build. Paint and body work alone can easily be 6k and the wheels and tires another 4500 or more. Also in 2010 k swaps were very expensive.
30 g for a honda gtfo
That's one rich virgin right there.
Colin G savage
What color is that Del sol?
