Short Helloween singer history: First was Kai Hansen (here on guitar, left '88) second was Michael Kiske (bald one, left '93), third singer was Andy Derris. This is the united tour (reunion) with the guitarist and first singer of Helloween Kai Hansen & Michael Kiske joining Helloween again.
The mere fact all those egos got balanced is remarkable. The power metal version as if Roth and. Hagar teamed up for Van Halen
Those bands you think are better, ask them who inspired them. They're gonna say Helloween.
It's worth it, David. The original guitarists are the older two: Hansen & Weikath. One shredder and one more melodic soulful guitarist. The grandfathers of speed metal. The younger guitarist joined later when Hansen were still with his band.
The second vocalist joined the band (1994) when the first vocalist left the band. Now they're reunited. The drummer now is the fourth. The original died, the second is Haruna's favorite drummer, the third was a temporary drummer: Mötörhead's Mikkey Dee

The 5 greats of power metal, in any case it would be: helloween, Avantasia, Stratovarius Blind guardian and Gamma ray.... maybe Rhapsody, Angra, Sonata arctica, Kamelot, Hamerfall will follow...
Michael Kiske (the bald singer) was the original singer from 86 to 93 before lefting the band,second singer is Andy Deris who took the job from 94 until today...from 2017 Helloween have both in their line up.
I listen to thrash mostly, plus three or four other bands nowadays. I haven't listened to power metal in over 20 years, but I loved Helloween and Gammy Ray (Kai Hansen's band after he left Helloween), Blind Guardian, Primal Fear, Edguy and Angra. And now watching this I got goosebumps and I could sing along to the lyrics, they immediatelly popped in my head as the music went on.
There are so many bands nowadays, so much exposure, but back then there were very few that did this. Helloween basically invented and developped european power metal.
I am glad people are different. I actually think that Helloween writes much better long songs than DT. I would not take away a single Guitar Solo from this as I feel that every solo tells a story, the last harmony is one of my favorite solos of all time. But glad your honest, would not be much of a reaction if you wasn't, but people like different stuff :)
michael kiske(the bald one) was 49 here and andi deris(the one with the long hair) was 53 this concert was done like 6 yrs ago in madrid spain and this was like 3 hrs into the concert

Studio version is less than 14 minutes. The solos are appropriate considering the song has story: the keeper. It's more like present day Lovebites. 1st guitar solo, 2nd, twin guitars. But they done it twice following the story
Forgot one thing: this was written in 1988 when Dream Theater still struggle writing a long song, The Killing Hand, for their debut 🤘
Marcus Grosskopf the bass player is always heard in Helloween stuff. I would cringe at the idea of playing under 3 guitars but Marcus pulls it off live. You did react to Lovebites dead on cover of one of their other songs, Eagle Fly Free, so much of their other work is shorter. Bear in mind this is a 35 year old song that influenced many bands who have come after them. This is their Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
This song hits my nostalgia bigtime. I personally loved it back in the day and thought it was the challenger to my first true love (Iron Maiden), but I am a big power metal fan. Also, I was that D&D kid so it all was just synchronicity. I couldn't actually score this because its too personal to me and I would give a higher score than it deserves (Same with Iron Maiden actually...I would give them 9s on songs that would be at best a 7 or even 6). I miss well done power metal. Babymetal does some (they need more), Dragonforce does it in spades but for some reason they come off slightly...hokey..to me quite often. Anyhow, your score makes sense. Your score actually shows you rate fair even if you're not a huge fan of what you're hearing. Makes your reviews worthwhile to hear. I think overall this songs length is focused on the storytelling (gotta hit all 7 keys discussions one by one). A bit like Iron Maiden's Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner...no easy way to shorten that and do the concept any justice. This is Helloween trying to do their RotAM moment.

@David Heretic This Live album. that whole pupmkins united tour where this stems from, was more a celebration for the band and fans. it Reunited former Helloween member Guitarist/singer Kai Hansen( co founder off the band. left in december 1988 to form Gamma Ray with Ralf Scheepers created a band with Micheal Kiske in 2009 called Unisonic) And the Bald guy Mister Micheal Kiske ( joined in late 1986 got kicked in 1993 made solo records played with Avantasia,Kiske/Somerville and Unisonic. did lots of other stuff. ) they were joined this tour with all the current band members Guitarist Michael Weikath ( co founder off the band) bassist Markus Grosskopf ( co founder off the band) Andi deris vocals ( joined in 1994 came from the band called Pink cream 69 ) Guitarist Sascha Gerstner ( Joined in 2002. After Helloween producer Charlie Bauerfriend introduced Sasha to Micheal Weikath ) Drummer Daniel Löble ( Joined in 2005 came from a band called Rawhead Rexx ) One off the founders off the band Ingo Schwichtenberg was asked to leave the band in 1993. after the band noticed something was wrong with him. Passed away in 1995 due to having schizophrenic episodes. the Album The time off the oath 1996 was was dedicated to his memory.this Tour took 2 years with Holiday breaks. ( 2017 and 2018 ) somwhere in August 2018 the Label and the band announced they would stay together as a 7 piece band. that the pumpkins united live album would be released in 2019 and that they were making Progress of making a album wich should be released in 2020. Covid hit the wrold and they delayed the new album for a 2021 release simply called helloween. they toured the world in 2022 and 2023. and are now in the procces of making a new record. hope this give you some more details on why there are 3 guitar players and 2 singers on stage.
I recommend that you listen to the record. The live version is great if you are familiar with the song but you get a better feel for the song from the record 🎃🎃🎃
This song is kinda like Operation: mindcrime(the entire album) by Queensryche in that it can’t be taken out of context, the story telling is of course not as good as on mindcrime but still the case, it can’t be viewed in the same way as, for example Octavarium. It’s also very notable here that this live performance features two members that left the band 30 years ago, and this tour was their reunion, and like Maiden they didn’t kick their existing members

Comparing what Helloween did back in the 80's to dream theater is like comparing a Jaguar E-type to a Tesla and saying the Tesla is better.

The singer you don't know is Andy Deris, he was the second singer of Helloween from 94 to today, Kiske, the original singer joined Helloween again in 2017.

The second singer does not need an introduktion. It´s Andi Deris the third vocalist in the band. The guy with the red guitar is actually the original singer.

For me, each solo was kinda a part of his journey. The song is like a Monomyth. I just keep thinking about whats happening on the lyrics.

3 actually, don’t forget one of the founders Kai Hansen. He sang some parts on their newest album and sang the entire debut album Walls Of Jericho.
the problem with what you are saying is that those bands came after them, rush was power rock, then came queensryche took this to a heavy level, then helloween put the metal into power most of the bands you mentioned were influenced by this band in 1988 when this came out you must not have been listen to this music because the first keeper of the seven keys prt 1 in 1986 basically invented a new genre it was speed, nwobhm, and thrash combined sprinkle in lovecraft and no one knew what to do with it but thrash, heavy metal, and rock people all found something that they liked. If you listen to manowar, blind guardian, omen and even savatage after walls of jericho came out(that's helloweens first album with hanson singing) their music changed and followed helloweens lead, you are wearing a beast in black shirt all of the bands they talk about were influence by helloween witch they built on tarja even said with all her training helloween was one of the bands push her to sing metal

i think this is a fair score , i would probably have given more but to be honest rose tinted nostalgia would have a lot to do with it.
Haha, this is HAPPY Metal! Not some Shabbatish 'funeral' metal.... The 'bald gyu' told you in the beggining - it's 'an opera' kind of thing... This is THE SONG of all song, ever written. And all the 'symphonic' Nightwish-es learned from these guys and this song what to do... ;) And this mid-tempo piece is a kind of a ballada, not some banana 😁 The other 95% of their songs are pure heavy/power/happy metal. If you prefer more heavier and speedish metal, you should look for Kai Hansen's band Gamma Ray ;]

I’m not that familiar with this band. I bought their I Want Out EP years ago and enjoyed it well enough, but never went beyond that.
It's really a very long song. Helloween has great hits, for example If I could fly, but this so-called opera is an average piece for my taste.
Great reaction! Halloween has never really been my "thing." Did this song need to be so long? I'm not sure. I got bored by it.

Power metal hymn! And my personal favorite of all time! No one doesn't it better in powe metal. They are godfathers of power metal/1984/ and everyone was influenced by them. It's just your personal taste. In reality others sounds like them because they are fans
I'm a huge fan of helloween but the kiske era is by far my "less favorite" era of the band
