I developed a dislike of most of the passengers, except maybe Jethro, so I had a tougher time investing in these characters. The first time I saw this episode, I would have been almost happy with most of them dying...I liked the development of the characters early on and grew to like them, but most became somewhat to very unlikable by the end. I've grown to appreciate the episode more over the years, but it can't be S tier for me. I'm glad we can all have different opinions in the Harbo Wholmes channel, though.🙂

Russell T. Davies is clearly a student of Rod Serling's work in order to write this powerful "Twilight Zone"-like story where the Doctor faces the greatest monster of all -- human nature. It's an ironic twist that Skye's despondency allows the entity access to her body, while the hostess's sacrifice cheats the entity of its victory and gives Skye what she wanted -- her death.

I always remember how chilling it was to see The Doctor overtaken by the entity but not fully enough so that he's unaware of what's going on - the fear in his eyes as he's dragged towards the door and unable to prevent his imminent death, and the relief in those same eyes when he catches his foot and cheek on a chair just by chance; the scene doesn't just weaponise fear, it philosophises it

    • @luke8801
      @luke8801 3 ปีที่แล้ว +60

It’s also like you can see his life flashing before his eyes - he’s had ten faces, lived for over 900 years, destroyed Skaro, sent the Daleks and Cybermen back to the void, faced Zygons, Sontarans, Silurians, Weeping Angels, Vashta Nerada, he won the fucking Time War, but was almost killed by a few humans.

This also had to be one of the cheapest episodes to make. It’s 11 actors total, and it takes place almost entirely in one unremarkable room. A high school theater club could put on a half-way decent production if they wanted to.
This is what writing with limitations can do: there was no room to hide behind fancy sets, cool monsters, flashy special effects, or fun action sequences, so RTD knew all the drama had to come straight from his words and his actors. It’s a really impressive feat to deliver such a riveting episode solely on the strength of the characters and their interactions

I think one of my favourite things about this episode is how it shows the Doctor interacting with people when he doesn't have a companion. It was a big thing about the 10th Doctor, him being lonely and not knowing what to do without someone. It shows how when the Doctor doesn't have someone to bridge the gap between strangers and himself he becomes even more alienated than usual.

A companion definitely humanizes him in both personality, but also in other people’s perspectives. Otherwise, he’s a stranger who seemingly knows everything and is enjoying the adventure, while those who don’t know are horrified.

this episode really hits hard rewatching it as a neurodivergent adult specifically because of the fear of trying to reason with angry people who will take any sign of 'unusual behaviour' to turn it against me or to imply that im a freak or theres something wrong with me (eg moving in a certain way, or not having 'the right' facial expression, or finding it difficult to talk. hell, repeating things (echolalia) is a common autistic trait).
i can absolutely see myself getting overwhelmed in public and then getting yelled at by someone who looks like jethro's dad, and then not being able to do anything because of not being able to talk properly (im not non verbal, its just hard to talk when overwhelmed). unlike almost every other situation in doctor who, this is scary because its something that can (and probably will, and kinda has) happen to me irl

Someone suggested "imagining them in their underwear, it makes everyone more "human" and less fearful". It worked and she got over her fears and got her licence. Dunno if it will help you. I have sort of done it a few times when stressed...nearly giggled myself into hiccups once! However, on a more serious note: Don't be shy about seeking help if you need it. 1) The Story doesn’t require any alien makeup or big effects to be pulled off.

One theory regarding the Entity that I came across somewhere (I wish I could remember where so that I could credit it but this was a while ago and I just saw it in passing) that I think is an interesting way of interpreting the episode is that the Entity itself was neither originally good nor bad in its intentions - its only initial goal being to learn in the only way it knew how - and its eventual malevolence was entirely influenced by everyone's fear of it. A sort of Frankenstein's Creature "since everyone treats me as evil, I guess I must be evil" situation. It absorbs the information via the character's voices that they believe it to be a threat to be destroyed so it essentially fulfils that role because it literally doesn't know any better.
I don't know whether I personally entirely believe that theory or not, but it's certainly a new way of looking at the episode and again raises some further interesting ideas about the nature of mob paranoia.

I was a medic in the USAF for 5 years. When I deployed, the convoy I went on was with a unit that had been hit hard a month or so back, when the medics we'd replaced had still been there. One of the drivers came right up to me and, somewhat aggressively, asked, "Are you going to freeze?" When I asked what she meant she pointed to the clamshell we were standing in front of, at the names above the entrance, "___ was my best friend. When we were hit, the medic just stood there, frozen. They didn't even do anything they were so scared."
Now I know a bit more about the incident, I know there was nothing that medic could have done to save her friend, but that medic also had absolutely no way of knowing that. They should have done more, but were unable to in the moment.
I eventually told that driver that I had no idea if I would freeze or not, but that she (and anyone else) had my full permission to slap tf out of me if I did to get me out of it. Unfortunately my own moment to do my job would come, and like the medic who came before me I wouldn't be able to do anything for the person, and I will also evaluate how I handled that moment for the rest of my life, but I didn't physically freeze. My body went on autopilot in a way it never had before, even with me having worked ambulance in some pretty fucked up situations state side, and I'm grateful every single day I trusted my training. Even with all of that though, I've never since criticized that other medic for freezing. Because I think we all panic and "freeze," it just presents differently with all of us.
You never know who you're going to be in moments like that. And yet it's so hard not to judge how everyone else acts in those moments.

I always felt like Skye knew what this thing was. The way she seemed more panicked than anyone else when everything started and the way she yelled its coming for me even though there really wasn't much evidence of it. It feels like Skye had this whole story we didn't get to know.

I have seen a lot of Doctor Who videos talking about various episodes but never about this one and I was so disappointed, cause I remember seeing this for the first time and being completely blown away by it. The in-depth study of the human mind- the fears and anxiety- that this episode does so well makes it one of the best episodes.

Just look at the amazing acting from Lesley Sharp, and the whole cast. Stunning. It just goes to prove again how much the show has lost lately. This is clever Sci fi-horror. No hysterical spinning or gurning, no massive exposition dumps, it's all so brilliantly unfolded, adding to the tension. It's claustrophobic too, another thing many humans feel and fear. Brilliant TV.

One of my favourite moments from the show is when they raise the shield for the first time. The creepy/enchanting music, the reactions and the lighting is just absolutely fantastic.

I am so glad I found someone else who has Midnight as their favorite episode. I was ranting to my friend about it(obviously the abridged version because I can go on for hours) and she almost didn’t want to see it. This episode is truly a cinematic masterpiece.

This is an episode for me that when I first watched the show as a kid I didn’t really like that much but when I rewatched the show as an adult I realised how truly great this episode is, easily top 5 nu who episodes.

I am so glad I’m not the only one who has had a fascination with this episode for years.
I love discussing it and thinking about it almost more than I enjoy watching it. I end up gripped by the tension. Almost like I’ve been possessed by the creature too.
It’s incredible how much is conveyed by people talking in a room.
I also love the affirmation that some things aren’t meant to ever be understood. The universe is beautiful and terrifying. Tread carefully.
(That feeling of “letting things go unexplained” was lost over the next few seasons I think)
Great video!! You’ve got another subscriber.

Every single time I see this episode I get chills, without fail.
It's terrifying, not because of the monster/creature, but because of the people and how real their reactions are.

I've always believed that theory because of a few things she says in the episode. But I'm pretty sure Russel T Davies confirmed it somewhere.
1: "I'm on a schedule, this is completely unnecessary!" What was she planning to do?
2: "I found myself single recently, not by choice... She needed her own space as they say." Sounds like Sky was dumped and became depressed, or something worse happened but she won't elaborate.
3: BANGING ON DOOR "She said she'd get me!" Possibly on the run from her ex-girlfriend.
My theory is that Sky killed her girlfriend after a heated argument about needing time apart from each other. Sky's gf's dying words were "I'LL GET YOU, EVEN IF I'M DEAD." The police were obviously after Sky so she booked a last minute trip to a random resort planet so she could kill herself to end the torment and shame she was feeling. (This could be another possible reason why the entity chose Sky. She wanted to die, so it gave her what she wanted).

Apart of me will always be grateful to Doctor Who for sparking that curiosity and love for adventure and science, the need to ask questions and look for answers, and with Tennant being so lively and so welcoming it just makes you want to be as warm and open to making friends and sharing stories as him! It was such a unique experience that I really wish new Doctor Who fans can experience even if the episodes aired years ago. This whole episode so perfectly encapsulates why I adore the deep-sea, from the mystery and fear of how hostile the environment is and the impossibility of live to this surreal experience when you get to witness even just a snippet, like the three witnessing the site for the very first time. I can also very much confirm every single person is science will gladly give a presentation on their their topic at any given chance so the professor is spot on with his portrayal! Just a fantastic episode that I feel can never be replicated with its story and general feel, thank you so much for making this video and reminding me of how amazing it was!

It's my favourite also. Just the sheer brilliance of the writing and the acting. No gimmicks, no special effects, no monsters. Just perfect. It must be the most horrific episode yet due to what is not seen and the fears of our imagination. I hope Russell can repeat this with the fourteenth Doctor.

The interesting thing about the “Best Doctor Who Episodes Ever” is that they’re never standard Doctor Who episodes. Blink barely has the Doctor in it at all, Midnight is a bottle episode with no companion, no TARDIS and no visible monster, and Heaven Sent is the same except the Doctor is the only character in the entire episode.
None of the all time great episodes of Modern Who have featured the Doctor and his companion going on an adventure in the TARDIS.

This is a brilliant psychological study; I've read other comments that mention Classic Who's Edge of Destruction, which is set entirely in the Tardis control room and involves the slow disintegration of the crew's morale and team spirit.
This, however, is on a whole new level. I must have watched it oh, a dozen times; of course I'll never feel exactly the same way as I did the first time, when I didn't know what was going to happen, but it's still gripping.
I think it won an award, and, if it didn't, it should have.

Honestly, this episode terrified me. It definitely targeted one of my biggest of just being thrown out and being silenced. It's hard to say the exact fear, but the isolation the episode inspires and the paranoia is amazing being isolated with something unknown and dangerous. Makes my skin crawl in such a oddly satisfying and sickening way I love this episode.

It's worth pointing out - the professor might be right. It really might be impossible for anything to survive on the surface. It's a mark of how clever the episode is that we end up assuming something attacked Sky from outside the Crusader.

I've recently been rewatching NuWho for the first time since I was a kid, and oh my god this episode. I watched Midnight, Turn Left, and the two part finale all in the same night, and as much as I was sobbing over Donna in the finale, all I could think about the next day was this episode. Most of the tension of the show is lost on me as an adult because I know the stories so well, but this one was painful to watch.

This is my favorite episode too. I love how it's a descent into madness for the passengers, and near death for the Doctor. All his qualities and traits, which have usually been strengths, become evidence to the panic-stricken passengers that he is an outsider. It's very psychological in a very entertaining and easy-to-relate-to episode: I can even empathize with the panic the passengers go through, and the terrible decisions they make, in such a bizarre and frightening situation.
