    Rewatching this whole retrospective series, I'm once again struck by the depth of Chris Eccleston's integrity. He may come across as this very serious, brooding man in comparison to the bountiful energy of his successors when they're interviewed, but his words speak of a deep compassion for both every person he worked with, no matter how small their credit, and for the audience at home receiving his performances.
    I may have mentioned this anecdote before in this comment section, but I'm always reminded of his interview for an anti-bullying organization, where he admitted to having been a bully as a little boy, and when asked what he had done, he tearfully described how "he'd stolen another boy's crisps". And despite how minor an eight-year-old stealing another's potato chips seems, he sounded genuinely regretful that he apparently hadn't gotten the chance to apologize for his behavior. That's the kind of guy Chris Eccleston appears to be.

    I have some things to say about 9's regeneration, particularly how he talks to Rose before regenerating.
    First he says he "Sang a song and the Daleks ran away", shielding Rose from any kind of guilt or blame for his death.
    Next he cracks a joke about dogs with no noses, having two heads (or no head), lightening the mood to prepare Rose for the coming news.
    When the process starts, he clutches his chest in pain before immediately telling Rose to stay away, protecting her from what's about to happen.
    He begins to explain the process, carefully choosing his words and trying desperately to not scare her, cracking another reassuring joke about his "daft old face", before saying his goodbyes.
    He goes out with a smile and gracefully regenerates into 10, and his last word is "Barcelona", reassuring Rose (and by extension, the audience) that he's still the same man.
    Every. Single. Line. of his Regeneration scene is selfless and kind. Not once does he consider himself as he dies. He continued to protect Rose even after sacrificing himself for her to live and a perfect reflection of how he's changed during the season.

    • @ericstahmer720

      9's is definitely an underappreciated regeneration. I think 10 earned the right to be a little selfish after having so short a life and his is perfect in it's own way, but 9 will always have a special place in my heart.

    • @avery9076
      @avery9076 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @@ericstahmer720 The 10th doctor's regeneration just made Matt Smith's job of earning the audience's trust even harder than it already is by portraying almost entirely in a negative light. Not to mention the episode its tied to is kinda just bad. I love 10 but his regeneration was a misstep in my mind.

    • @nerce
      @nerce 2 ปีที่แล้ว +57

      Don’t forget how he spoke those lines until Rose smiled, too. He was holding that regeneration off until 9 saw her smile…one last time…as himself. Cried typing that.

    • @JV-xf9ry
      @JV-xf9ry 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      The best two regenerations were David tenent’s and Matt Smith’s. My kids were close to adulthood with Matt’s and they were moved to tears by it, so was I, even when I watch it over and over. Matt Smith was my favorite doctor and his stories with Amy and Rory and River Song were just brilliant. It’s fun to watch the serious sci-fi of Star Trek TNG or DS9 and follow that up with some episodes of Doctor Who reboot seasons 1 through 7.
      What I though was very clever on the part of the reboot writers was to introduce the Time War as a way to explain the gap between 1996 and 2005. Very good attention to detail. The very different but same characteristics they gave to doctors nine, ten, and eleven was very cool, while paying homage to doctor who canonicity. Love reboot seasons 1 through 9. Peter Capaldi brought a return to an older and wiser doctor, yet he fell short a bit from previous doctors by leaning on a human to guide his ethic? A bit odd for The Doctor’s established history, but it grew on me. Then the wheels fell off and the show lost its way. Terrible writing and story telling replaced ten solid seasons with over the top preachy shaming stories. Then culminating in the total rewrite of Doctor Who canon in season 12. No wonder the show lost its audience. But I still watch the classic series and the reboot seasons 1 through 10. Love them. And Chris E’s Doctor lands at the heart of it, and he is not forgotten!

    Watching polished, incredible documentaries like this makes me realize just how much I want Chris Eccleston to come back for the 60th. It’s a far more realistic prospect than back in 2013, since the man himself seems to warm up more to his past role. Thirteen and Nine would fly off each other brilliantly (and since Jodie and Chris have worked together before, their chemistry would only be stronger).

    In the 90s, as a teenager, I wrote to the BBC urging a return of Doctor Who. In the States, PBS used to play it, and I remember watching 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th Doctors. I was one of the few that watched 8th Doctor. So when the 9th told Rose to "run," I knew he was the Doctor. And as 9 grew over the course of the series, I was in awe. The "everybody lives" moment is still one of the greatest Who scenes.

    My parents werent huge fans of Sci-fi so while I was born in 88, I never grew up watching Doctor Who. When it was brought back with Eccleston, we were already fans of him in other movies such as Gone in 60 Seconds so we sat down to watch him. My mom and I fell in love with him and the series so hard that we would make it a weekly event to get munchies and watch Doctor Who. Im super glad he was the Doctor and still think he did the weary and sad Doctor extremely well. He had a sadness and rough edge to him that other Doctors havent matched.

      Still wish when they brought the show back they'd carried it on with Paul mcgann and given him a series he never got back in the 90s it would've felt like more of a proper continuation as he was still the official doctor who hadn't regenerated wanted more of mcgann he was great as the 8th time Lord he was robbed twice of a full series.and just starting it with a new doctor without an on screen regeneration didn't look right but I still loved Christopher eccestons 9th doctor he was and all ways will be my favourite new who doctor. a spin off tv series with mcganns 8th doctor would be brilliant.

      Paul McGann is really The Doctor of a special case, I guess. Despite how I really like him, and how amazing he is in the audio, I don't think the show could be revived as successful as it now if it wasn't Christopher Ecclestone, RTD's and 2005. The timing was perfect.
      Also honestly, the Big Finish scripts, as well as the EDAs novels, are really good it could bring out the best for the swashbuckling steampunk romantic Doctor, and I don't think television script-with a lot of demand to please "general" audience-could do that.

It so strange to learn of how the show would later completely undo everything that happened here, with the Time War being undone, with the Dareks running rampant again and the Timelords brought back to do nothing. What was the point of doing that? And worse of all Eccleston wasn't there for the big anniversary episode. I sort of regret becoming a Doctor Who fan with the reboot, I ended up getting attached universe that was such a mess.

It really could have if they hadn't also dialled back everything the doctor learns and grows during 9th. Hbomberguy brings it up in his sherlock video but every series since has constantly been trying to redo that scene where the doctor shows how horrifying he can be. The episode where he snaps at a Dalek and begins taking glee in telling it to kill itself, torturing it, the look of horror and shame on the doctors face when it says he would make a good Dalek is chilling. The way by the end of the episode he is on a path to becoming a better person. YET EVERY SEASON AFTER, THE DALEKS SHOW UP AND SAY LOOK YOU GOT ISSUES LOL. He was meant to have grown

    Finally, we have come to the 'NuWho' era. Great work as always mate, always look forward to these! I started with 9 although I had seen quite a few reruns of the classic series on weekend afternoons on BBC two during the 90s. I can not say I had become a fan as I was only between 9 and 12 at that time. But I did discover or maybe already knew I was a fan of sci-fi and honestly TNG was super awesome at the time. But then came the reboot, I honestly was really ready to love it (even when mates were like isn't that a kids show mate, like really cheesy and whatnot), I loved 9's character, yes it was never fully developed, that is hard to do with a single season, not to mention the problems the show had as you have outlined them. But he was the doctor and a good one at that and even if Eccleston himself is not too bothered by it (for which he might have very good reasons) he goes down in history as 9 and will be loved and remembered as such for all time.
    So next time we can look forward to talking about such greats as; "The Girl in the Fireplace", "The Family of Blood", "Blink" and Donna Noble! Looking forward to it.

    I genuinely hope that Chris will someday return to the role, because I feel his Doctor is so underrated. He certainly got the intensity right as well as some proper funny moments. Take for example the scene with the auton hand choking him in Rose, his starting episode, that's some proper comedy, considering that it was probably shot with Chris wielding the hand himself and pretend that it was choking him. Also the way that scene is cut, with Rose not noticing something being wrong, only adds to the comedy, before getting serious again. That scene and his restaurant scene with Margaret Blaine are two great examples of Chris pulling of comedy rather well and I think that is what the Doctor needs, both a sense of comedy and a sense of seriousness, something which I feel all actors so far have been able to put into the role.

    Although my first memories of Dr Who were of Tom Baker and that synthesized opening music my first true experience of the character was Eccleston and I was just throughly entertained by the show, his performance and the somewhat campy yet charming idea of mainstays like the Daleks and Cybermen
    I have to say I feel the 9th Doctor would have been more than welcome to stay longer but he did his part of reestablishing the character and leaving with such a strong foundation

    When I was around 14 in 2007, I saw that bbc America was marathoning Doctor Who. I had heard about it online from other sci-fi fans, and had no idea they were marathoning it in preparation for the third series’s finale a couple months later, but I set my dvr to record a handful of episodes so I could check it out. I was super lucky that I started from the beginning of the revival with Rose, and while I can certainly see now that the tone of the season is a bit all over the place, I still adore every episode of Nine’s season. This is a great retrospective, thank you for all the time and effort you’ve put into these videos!

But put the bolts on and there’s a tangibility to it that I can attack to in real life. Like the series 2 cyber man, it’s the tangibility that makes it feel real

Despised that the BBC wouldn't run his episodes, along with all the other Doctors' for so long. It was insulting to ignore his work. As ever, well done on the wonderful retrospective. I was 12 at the time of new who season 1 so of course Eccleston is my Doctor. I knew about Doctor Who, that multiple actors had played the role, but I assumed - like James Bond - other characters just pretended it was the same guy. At 12 I never kept up with the papers or forums, so the regeneration was a surprise in every fashion to me. That my new favourite character was changing and their was a in-universe reason for it was one of the few moments I was truly mind-blown. I credit that moment on that cold Saturday evening as the inspiration for my want to tell stories on some level. While I do wish Chris stayed for a while longer, Season 1 works as perfect introduction of Who to a new young audience like myself. Regeneration is a big part of the character so to see that book end season 1 I believe is well placed. It works that the Doctor becomes the man he needs to be to love Rose.
    And of course I loved Tennant who is also my doctor (I can have two!).

    I remember when I first saw Rose. New Who hadn't come to America yet, but I saw a pirated DVD of the series at a convention one summer, and I bought that first episode out of a sense of nostalgia. I didn't expect much; I was a big fan of DW when I was a teenager and when New Who started I was 40! But I bought one episode for nostalgia and watched it when I got home. I was blown away by it and kicked myself for not buying every episode available!!! But within the next year, the first two seasons were available in America and I've been watching it diligently ever since.

They happened to be walking through the living room when Eccleston held up the vial and said "anti-plastic" they sat right down and watched that episode on most of the rest for the next couple of years. Yes, but I think a regeneration after 1 series worked for The Doctor as a character. One of the best parts of Eccleston as The Doctor was the way he seemed to push people away. Aside from Rose, he didn't really let people get close to him.
      Tennant on the other hand was more open, which I interpret as Rose having changed The Doctor enough to make his personality do a complete 180. The regeneration wasn't just about him dying, but also about him changing

    "Everybody Lives" is my favorite moment from the entirety of Doctor Who. The moment of pure joy and relief after having experienced so much pain and anger was awesome. It's a great counterpoint to the moment when he saw the captured Dalek earlier in the season. That was a moment of pure rage and grief.

      For me my favorite moment is 12th's emotional speech about war. Where humans and zygons both have a big button and have to decide. The way he gets frustrated and hopeless when he screams that in the end they're just going to end up talking, why make millions suffer before you're going to end up doing the inevitable?

      He seems to have curated his roles to support the less privileged to. Like in "Let Him Have It" "Jude" "Hillsborough". Even in this theres a hint of standing up for Norveners by being the first Northern Doctor

    Christopher Eccleston to me was the working class doctor in an extremely good way. His portrayal bridged many of us that grew up the different doctors. 42:09 I was watching the episode with my mother who watched William Hartnell from the beginning, as soon as Rose says "If you're an alien, how come you sound as though you're from the North?" The Doctor's response was a classic. It made my mum spit out her coffee & she pissed herself laughing (Mum's a Mancunian).
    Eccleston's performance as The Doctor brought him more down to Earth & made the show more believable in sci-fi. The production values are out of this world.

      @@iusethisnameformygoogleacc1013 I see you're using a troll account and that your understanding of my post failed when you used the translator.
      Production values of New Who were far better than Classic Who in line of the 21st Century. The technology used was more inline with modern sci-fi movies rather than the days of cardboard sets & cheesy explosions of Classic Who. The writing of New Who was far better. My mother watched Who from the start & I grew up on it. Christopher Eccleston made the doctor more down to earth. it was a pity that he left the series due to a fallout with the team who brought New Who together.
