do u mean wicked or just the best she's sounded in general? if it's the second, id disagree bc she sounded pretty damn great in frozen. but as for singing specifically as elphaba i completely agree, def the best in a long time.
I think it’s a bit of a combination of the two, she can still go quite high into the 5th octave as she mix belts upper 5th octave notes now since she can’t pure chest belt them any more (really the mixed belt is the healthier technique so I guess that’s a good thing ) but I think she’s definitely much more comfortable with the lower version
I’m sure she sings more often than I do, but I’m a first soprano. My vocal range was higher in high school and college as I sang and warmed up my vocal chords daily. Now, 20 years after high school, my range isn’t as high. I only sing, with a choir, once a year for Messiah and even the Hallelujah chorus can strain me, so I really have to warmed up properly. You don’t use it, you lose it, but I’m sure the fact that I’m 20 years older does change things.
Still kind of surprised they went with this version for the anniversary show, I get that Idina sings this version exclusively live (to my knowledge) because the orignal is difficult on her voice, but that's with singing it multiple times a week along with the rest of a set, I feel like it wouldn't have taken that much prep for her to nail the orignal version, even if just for this show
This was actually amazing, I’m not trying to be rude, because I could never have her talent, but I was actually pretty surprised because 85% of her live performances that I’ve seen have been pretty bad, but I’m sure that’s because of her vocal damage throughout the years.
I really don't know if this song has this studio album version or not but the show version is a lot better and it looks like they lowered the key of the song and change the melody a bit in some parts or she sings some parts differently which make me feel it s not defying gravity anymore.
@@ragazzopigro97 She wanted the audience to sing it. She actually did this song twice, because the orchestra screwed up the first time, and she did the same thing the second time. It was intentional.
this is her current tour version of the song. she changes it up a little for each tour---check various recordings through the past decade. most of the artists who tour with the song change it up a little. biggest changes are in kerry ellis's version. i think the last time idina sang the stage version was in 2014, but i'm not positive. great recording of it on youtube.
This just shows how improper techniques during Wicked days destroyed her voice. Even in this slower version, after so many years, she is still pushing and straining, instead of investing in learning how to use her voice in a healthy way. No wonder it gets worse and worse. I actually really like her tone and her songs. But the more I learn about singing, i realize this is not the way to hit high notes.
I actually learned all about from vocal damage, and how age can effect the voice from actual ENTs, voice/music teachers, and singing vocal therapists with work with actual professionals from Chicago (mostly opera singers). You are way off base in what you are saying
@@elizabethkhouri3366 hm that’s interesting. Could you elaborate a bit more? I’d love to understand how im way off. New perspective is always welcomed. From what i have observed, singers whom have kept the quality of their voice as they age such as Lea salonga have used good techniques, and the most common reason for losing the longevity of singing voice is damaging the vocal cords. So good technique is vital to maintaining your voice as you age. It would be interesting to hear what you have learned
@@chaudang3749 it’s hard for me to put into words because I’m still learning, but the most obvious thing is the fact she can use her vibrato (meaning she clearly has good breath support and it’s impossible to have vibrato and strain anyway). She is able to hold notes for very long periods of time and with great volume. Also professional microphones will not sound as clear as it did in the video when you lack resonance (I’ve worked in technical theatre) Also you need to know the fact she is a mezzo soprano so her high notes are lower than that of any of the other types of sopranos, such as dynamic, lyric, coloratura (type with the highest notes), etc. also mezzos have a darker quality to the voice. also you have to remember that you have to have build and trained strong low notes in order to even have high notes. Plus you can just hear how she passes though the passaggio. As well as the vocal twang and resonance she has. Especially in how that resonance is really forward and just the the way she opens her jaw.
There’s lots of other reasons I could go on about, but I’m not what I’d consider a professional yet so I don’t feel I can explain them well enough at this point in time. I’m still learning, training, and perfecting my craft. And on top of that there are some things you have to learn literally by ear (like with your hearing) to understand completely
Did u see her on Rent movie? Like quickly? As in very quickly? Well, let me tell this to you. Watch this: th-cam.com/video/L4GgaJzu7Zw/w-d-xo.html This is after Wicked and tell me her singing got weaker after her early Broadway days.
Want something recent? Here... th-cam.com/video/jE1BOd35zCM/w-d-xo.html. She knew what's going on, she's a professional. We all knew her technique was so...y'know what I mean. But her technique got better now, tbh. It's a big improvement for her. Idk if the bashers were really ignoring it or what...
She is inconsistent. But we´re talking about a professional "elite" singer, so, of course we´re not saying she sucks when compared to karaoke singers. The video of the studio recording, she´s singing mostly well within her range, so it´s easier to sound good. The other video is ok, but we can´t rule out that she indeed had more chance/time to recover and even improve her method (compared to those days in Broadway when she had to perform too often, too loudly, actually physically damaging herself). But, nonetheless, I personally don't like her voice anyway, there are thousands of other much better singers.

I did some research and I saw someone say, “I know I’ll get some hate for this, but am I the only person who doesn’t like Idina Menzel’s voice? Like she was fine in Rent but from Wicked on (especially in Frozen) she sounds like a whiny little kid and I can’t enjoy her stuff because of it” like he/she is stating his/her own opinion. I love Wicked I really do, but sometimes people need to get educated (me for some reason) and I love Broadway show tunes. Someone pls educate me on why Idina messed up her voice. Please?
I 1000% recommended searching up Hannah Bayles on youtube, she's a vocal coach and specifically focuses on musical theatre (she's adorable and funny). but she did a video on Idina, I think she reacted to a "best vocals" type video of Idina. really great video and educational too, Hannah is just so brilliant at what she does :)))
here, I decided to just search it up and link it for easy access for ya :) th-cam.com/video/8yi8_y0bFfU/w-d-xo.html she has a ton of great videos, I highly recommend browsing her channel if you're curious about learned more about the voice and stuff. she does even does musical episode reactions of shows and stuff like that.
The song that made me fall in love with Idina..... Proud to be an OG Fanzel when WICKED came out.... PRE-ADELE DAZEEM DAYS!!!
Why does everyone get her name wrong
@@1984GatorGirl it's a meme at this point. Everyone is poking fun at the time John Travolta introduced her as Adele Dazeem at the Oscars
Wow, she sounds so good singing Live!
I love Idina so much! I ❤️ this version as much as the original soundtrack.
Oracle 😃✨🐞🎧🍕🎤
This is the best she has sounded since early in her Broadway run as far as the song goes

Omg can some people shut up they got Idina there because she’s a beautiful singer a
And is the original cast
Thanks for posting!
Thank you for this epic video!!!!!! I'm so glad you shared it!!!!! She will always be my favorite!
That was sad not hearing her hit the F5 at 3:05 but she rarely hit it before
I've heard once she broke a rib her injury prevented her from being able to hit that note again :(
@Tanger999_YT it's also not live
@@olwenpuralena4576 that’s not true cause she hit it perfectly many times in the West End which was after her accident
@@Riah-bw5tk guess she's just inconsistent then
She just hit that note perfectly this year from carpool karaoke
I saw her live in 2008 in Detroit and it was AMAZING we had to help her cuz she forgot the next line in No Day But Today when she was singing it 💚
Stunning!
i just love idina
Have they lowered the key of the song because it's more comfortable for her or can she really not hit the high notes like the high F now?
I see. Would that be due to vocal damage or her just getting older?

Gilles Tompkins it’s only down a semi tone, so just a high E like the “team” in the wizard i :)

Watch her performances of Barefoot at the Symphony. She does absolutely amazing there.

Kristen Chenoweth has certainly maintained her voice not so sure about Idina
