Great tips,i used a high temp plastic dowel ,(PTFE,) 4-500F°like what rob sells, similar to your dowel ,still have to bee careful, glad you mentioned full face sheild mask, good sturdy boots help protect your feet from any OA dripping off the nozzle
Fred, Rob will add the battery safety chip to your Instant Vap for $50. Mine was an original version so I took it to the Honey Bee show in January and gave it to him. He shipped it back to me in a week. He even cleaned it while it was apart.
Thanks! I'll just keep an eye on that Volt display. I've not hit that 15% mark in a treatment cycle with the batteries I use, but that's good to know :)
@@FrederickDunn Hey Fred it's not 15%. That would be 3 volts for a 20 volt battery. At 15Volts. you begin deep cycling a 20 volt battery and shortening it's life.
Great video Fred. I also had some eye issues after treating 25 hives. Had "gooey eyes" for a week. Not fun. I've gone from safety glasses to goggles. But my mite drop is looking scarily good. 😮
Great how to video. I worked under a guy on flour silo treatments that had no business being in charge of others for 10 years. He had us doing unsafe things the whole time. I moved on into a purchasing job and told them what he was doing, and he still kept his job. Read and follow the instructions on anything you use, one man's slacking isn't worth your long-term health! I had to fight for things that were just common sense in my mind under him, and that was in the late 90's to 2000's.
Safety first :) we all know those who didn't pay any attention to those precautions and we used to read the Darwin Awards aloud to the gang at quarters. :)
If you ever have questions about whether or not a 3M respirator/filter combo is correct, you can call them directly for advice on usage. This is free and excellent peace of mind. And when I did it and mentioned oxalic acid vapor, he immediately asked if I was a bee keeper.
For those using polystyrene hive. I cut to size a stainless steel straw. Drill a hole in the correct angle, then gorilla glue it in the right place. It gives you enough space to not melt the hives. Works well on the apamaye bottom boards as well. Just use a bolt long enough to plug the straw all the way through. Fred's cork is a good ideal as well.
Hey Fred, I am in Central Missouri. I have about 10 layens hives And have about 15 buff Orphington in Plymouth rock mixed chickens my question is how do you keep the chickens from going to the bathroom all over your porch and chairs that you keep outside also, can you elaborate on broodiness as I’ve had a couple go broody this summer?
My chickens don't go up on our deck thankfully. But in the past i've used a motion activated spray-away unit that you connect your hose to. When thickens or other animals come near whatever you're trying to protect, it spritzes them with water and you're watering your garden, bushes, or grass in the process.
My Lorrobe unit has to be plugged in, which means I have to use an extension cord. If I go to the furthest bee hive, I have to use two extension cords. Do you see a problem with this? I think it takes longer for it to get up to 400 degrees. I am not sure the power is enough to go higher.
You'll want to use heavy extension cords if you can. I used to use my ProVap also and it required 110 power also. I do like this battery powered InstantVap. You can use PowerStations like the DeWalt units and that removes the need for extension cords or powere on site.
Turn it off... let it cool all the way down, put distilled water in the bowl, close it up and turn it on... let the water steam and vape out through the brass tube.. and you're done. :) Janos said just a tablespoon of water, but I don't think it's very specific.
Thanks so much for this video. Very clear. I also appreciated seeing the battery operated fan. It should also help on those hot, humid, windless days.
Whoa, great idea on using a bar clamp to re-align the boxes.
Thanks :)
I like the idea for the Apimaye hives. Thx for sharing Fred.
You're welcome :)

Yes, I have that adapter tip also, but it really gets stuck on the brass sometimes, so I've gone back to the dowell.

This is the first year that happened to me! I'm extra safe now... not happy with what can happen.

0:35 watched just a week too late as I slightly melted my beesmart bottom board. Great suggestion, will be making one soon.

I'm not sure if Fred's device is hot at the front. But mine will melt it.
In the video he says it's a wooden dowel
Thank you Fred
You're very welcome :)

Is it safe to treat with Honey supers on? I’m from central Iowa. Thanks
Each State has their own restrictions, in my State it's approved. The label of the OA is also supposed to outline if it's safe for supers being on.
Hi Fred, how do you ckean it ?

Even a little OAV breathed in will remind you this stuff is dangerous. Be safe.
No joke... don't take any chances.
