      I assume it takes about $100 per hour to cover all that. But, how the dealerships justify their exorbitant charges is beyond me!

    • @utidjian
      @utidjian ปีที่แล้ว

      @@0rnery Most dealerships I have been into have all sorts of extra employees and a grander looking place than most brick-n-mortar or mom-n-pop type repair facility. All those extra people and amenities cost money and you, me, the customer pays for it. The taxes and mortgage or rent on the property is all paid for by the customer. There is not much magic or mystery to it if you have ever run something as simple as a lemonade stand at the end of your driveway or girl scout cookies or whatever. One might think that more people should understand this... (Business and Marketing have been the top college major in the USA for decades) but they don't or they forgot.

    • @0rnery
      @0rnery ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@utidjian Hah! It would be one thing if the exotic Dealership experience yielded competent diagnosis & repairs. But, we see all too often, mom & pop shops get the job done correctly after Dealership fails, despite having specific tools and knowledge of how to repair their own products. And, they get it done for a fraction of the Dealership's price.
      Dealerships ought to be paying for their exorbitant overhead with car sales, not when their customers are between a rock and a hard place at the mercy of their shop.

I know some places it would of been 1 hour diag each concern for diag easy or not and can't blame those places either as they all need to be profitable to stay in business. Running a shop is far from cheap and easy. And we all know the government likes there chunk of anything made. Very reasonable SMA

    When I was first in business fixing RVs and mobile homes, I had a lot of people asking me to justify my hourly rate.
    They didn't want to hear that they were paying for experience or that I have bills to pay or that I'm in business to make a profit.
    Eventually, I just told them that if they didn't like it, that they didn't have to have me work on their units and they were free to look for someone else to do the job.
    After that, I never heard anything more about justifying costs!
    Apparently, there wasn't anyone else competent enough to do that kind of work.

      I think many people underestimate the time a proper diagnosis takes, the expertise is what you are paying for. Anyone can write up a BS estimate that doesn't address the actual problems, or "Parts-Cannon" the customer with things they don't actually need. In fact that wheel bearing - most shops would have said "you need all four wheels done" and not bother with quoting just the one that is the problem.

    The nickel part is fine when you do it yourself, because you can replace it again later when it fails. When it is your livelihood, the time involved doing it again free of charge under warranty isn't worth it.
    I got a parts cannon break. For some reason the parts catalogs got changed, and the listed part no longer fits. With no replacement, I had to find the actual problem. 😊
    I know back in 2009 the right part was in the books since I had to buy the relay back then, and it fit. It was the same symptom, but was the fan connector, not the relay this time.

    Excellent upload! I'm always impressed with your methodical and patient diagnostic work. 🧐
    The way you narrate as you go through the process really drives home the massive amount of experience and knowledge you have. This can only come through years of hands-on work combined with constant study and research of the ever-changing operations of modern automotive systems.
    There is no shortcut to this level of service. It takes 10's of thousands of hours of your life...
    And what is your time worth? It is TRULY our most valuable and precious commodity, as we have an ever-dwindling amount of it and it cannot be replaced once it is spent. NO ONE has the right to ask you to JUSTIFY your price for your time. If they do, then they have determined that your time has no value unless it can be 'justified '. That's arrogance and ignorance of the highest degree. I don't work for, or do work for, those kind of people anymore. My life and work has been the better for it ever since. 🙂
    My motto:
    "This is the 'price' (estimate) I have put on my time. You are free to take it or leave it, but I will not 'give' you anymore of it explaining why."
    Thank you again for sharing. 🙏

    Long time viewer here from England and this is one of my favourite so far as not only does it show off your excellence in well thought through diagnostic....
    But it shows the other side of what most customers only see..... the invoice...
    Absolutely nothing wrong with any of your prices or rates etc.
    Love the clearness of the invoice.
    Sod the haters in the comments, those People forget that you can source stuff cheap on the internet, but they forget you'll be waiting for it to arrive and that vehicle will be taking up space and time. And if it's wrong you'll be waiting again for the correct part.
    Your local supplier may be dearer but the customer service they offer you is what you're paying for.

    It's very interesting to me to see the costs associated with this kind of diagnosis and repair. Thanks for sharing that info! The ''missing' fuse did seem a bit like a setup at first, but it all made more sense when it was disclosed that she'd had the thing at the dealer before bringing it to you. No doubt the previous diagnostician removed the horn fuse in order to test the security system and simply forgot to reinstall it. It would be very interesting to see a written quote from the dealer!

    A customer can always say no to an estimate and go to another shop, which is apparently what this customer did after getting the dealer's estimate. Eric's labor prices seem fair, he uses quality parts because he has to back them if they fail. He's upfront about diagnostic costs. I would love to have such an honest and fair mechanic to rely on.

    This is why I watch your videos Eric. You do a great job, yes it comes at a cost but you are not like most shops, for example in Arkansas where i live i had a shop replace wiper motor on a 1988 GMC c1500 it blew the fuse they replaced it it blew again, i asked then to fix it not just change the fuse, again they changed the fuse and it blew, but 141 dollars and change later just to change the fuse i gave up. this was supposed to be the best mechanic team in my town, less than 11000 folks here... so watching you , I went to auto mechanics vo tech but am disabled , amputee and in wheelchair, I bought the switch with harness and no one here wants to put it in lol i will be doing it myself. I bought a new one of these when they first came out, Tiger Woods drove the same brown Enclave as me. Should have known as a technician not to buy first year models. This thing fell apart in my hands over the course of a year. It was in the Buick shop seven times. My salesman encouraged me to seek lemon law protection. I patiently let them fix it and then traded it in for a GMC truck (didn't want them to pass the problem to someone unsuspecting).It was better but now I am firmly a Toyota and Lexus only fan.

    Eric I ran across something a few months ago I had never saw, I'm a full auto tech in a manufacturing plant so if I get it in my bays it was never good to begin with. Ac wasnt cooling on an acadia, checked all the fuse and relay was blowing but compressor wasnt kicking on ohmed all the wiring from the compressor back to the fuse box and climate control mod and found nothing. As I was looking at the dic the temp outside was showing -34 degrees and I thought that was strange because I'm inside a plant so got out the trusty MDI and a laptop to check codes found nothing, went into ambient air temp sensor and it had a recalibrate function so recalibrated it and wallahh, didnt know if you had saw that before in the field but I hadnt in the plant. It thought it was too cold to kick the compressor on, wierd man. but getting parts is pretty easy for me, usually have plenty of them and the cars are clean and that makes thing alot easier too, good vids man I watch them all the time, keep up the good work.

Ur work is impeccable and probably the best I've seen on TH-cam. I was surprised when you have said in the past that some vehicles that come into your shop go elsewhere to get the work done after you diagnose the problem and said maybe it was because you were too expensive. I was expecting your labor rate would be in the neighborhood of $140+. I really enjoy your channel and thank you for doing the quality of work you do. Most shops here just don't measure up. If they can do it cheaper let them. Every now and then I get one of them. They want me to diagnose and then they go home and do it themselves. The best ones do this and then they call you how do I get something out. They usually go buy the parts and find out it usually costs more than for me to get and even do. I am always willing to help someone if they are willing to help and learn something. My labor is usually just tools I only take money for the parts and buy me some tools and that’s my labor. I don’t have a building or experience equipment to pay for so I really have no overhead and I like helping people.
