The credits in the beginning say Produced and Directed by "Mick Rock"... He just passed away the other day. A great British photographer who took many iconic photographs of David Bowie Queen and pictures of Freddie alone. He did the cover for "Queen 2" that inspired the beginning of the well known "Bohemian Rhapsody" silhouette, and many other videos and album covers including "Sheer Heart Attack" too. Mick Rock was very friendly with Freddie and David on a personal level and worked with other rock stars of that era. Very much a Rock Star in his own right.
This song by David was his first hit to make it. Inspired by the iconic walk on the moon. And was the intro to "Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" Check out "Ashes to Ashes" Major Tom makes another appearance on that song and on David's last album "Black Star" David was and is a true legend ... Who will always have a special place in my heart. You should listen to the album "Station to Station" in it's entirety. "Wild is the Wind" and "Word on a Wing" are beautiful ballads. David's voice is outstanding and Dereck the title track will blow your mind completely.
      Rest Peacefully Starman...Miss you

2001 A Space Odyssey was an inspiration for this song, undoubtedly but an even bigger influence was the ongoing space programme and the upcoming Apollo 11 mission to the Moon. The song was released just before the Moon landing took place. :)

You have SO much to discover with Bowie! One of the true giants of modern popular music and one of the most innovative and influential music artists of all-time! When it comes to influence, probably only The Beatles rank higher than Bowie! An incredible artist, who'd change his stage persona every few years, to match his changes in musical style. So much incredible music, he's a hero and an icon to the disenfranchised and marginalised, to freaks, rebels and minorities. Through his art alone, he probably did more to advance the cause of lgbtq equality than most activist organisations. An incredibly intelligent, funny and thoughtful man, yet very private at the same time. We will never see his like again. His death caused shockwaves around the World. It was headline news and World leaders queued up to praise him, including both President Obama and the Pope. The British Parliament even paused official business to laud him and pay their respects. He's sorely missed!

What's nice on the video is you see agony in Bowie's face when he says "and I think my spaceship knows which way to go." It confirms my feeling that the crisis occurs in the character's mind before the spaceship goes offline. I always get the feeling that Major Tom's demise is a suicide. I know it's not the only interpretation, but that's always how the story feels to me.
Another song that gets overlooked is "Wild Eyed Boy from Freecloud." Nice to react to some deep tracks as well.

this was written in 1969. the other guy (I don't know who he is) was referring to this song. Bowie vocals were practically all first takes what you hear on the record is what he sang only once live in the studio and he was capable of singing two times the same vocal to double his vocal without noticeble difference his pitch was superhuman.

A lot of the instrumentation in this part of his career was arranged by Mick Ronson who was also the lead guitarist during his Ziggy Stardust phase.
Mick Ronson was also the guy that put all the instrumentation together on Lou Reeds breakthrough album, Transformer, that had the standout tracks Walk on the Wild Side and Perfect Day both of which are well worth checking out.

I remember when Space Oddity was first played on Radio 1 (in the UK). At that time Radio 1 was broadcast on 247m AM, so coupled with the fact that most of us were listening on tinny sounding transistor radios, it didn't sound anything like this. Mono record players were still prevalent in most teens bedrooms, so we didn't get to hear any of the stereo effects on the single either. For those whose parents had a stereo music centre, which were the rage then, you could get to hear the album version in stereo when they were out.

  • @retropian
    @retropian 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Loved your reaction. Bowie was peerless in the 70’s. Constantly changing and evolving when other artists, once they found success stuck with the sound that brought them success and were forever stuck in a rut. You never knew what Bowie’s next album was going to be like. Major Tom became an important talisman for Bowie. He revisited him in Ashes to Ashes from his 1980 album Scary Monsters and again on his final album Blackstar; not lyrically but Major Tom appears in the video for the title track.

Bowie was very experimental. You’ll hear lots of strange sounds that are sometimes haunting. He was a musical genius dating back to the late 60’s and remained relevant his entire career and beyond his death.

Also playing with David is his good friend, keyboard wizard Rick Wakeman, on Mellotron and Stylophone. Rick was offered a place in David Bowie's band but turned it down to join progressive rock band Yes.

Ooohhhh.... 2001 Space Odyssey. The best movie of all time. The kind of film you need to prepare for. Much more than just a film... It's cinematic philosophy. For an enhanced experience of Bowie from space, though not as Major Tom, see "The man who fell to earth".

Interesting bit of info, when astronaut Chris Hadfield was on the International Space Station he mimed along to this very song. Then he filmed himself singing it for real 🥰

He went to the US looking like a hippy in a kaftan, which had become sooo mainstream, so he shook it up a bit and returned a God.
He toured with Blondie and Iggy Pop.
Infact, I think Ziggy came from Iggy, or the other way around.
If you haven't reviewed Peter Schilling - Major Tom. Give it a blast. Its recorded in German and English versions.

I am an Atheist but I believe in the Gods of Rock and Bowie is one, period. He was truly from another world. Thank you for checking it out!
Fun Fact: German Singer/Producer Peter Schilling made an Epilog to Bowies Song in 1982 called "Major Tom (Völlig losgelöst)" ( th-cam.com/video/KQRaj1vcnrs/w-d-xo.html ) that tells the story how Maijor Tom drifts away in his Space Caspule leaving beahind everything earthly and surrenders to the vastness of the void of Space. The track went to number one in numerous countries and the english on the version "Major Tom (Coming Home)" ( th-cam.com/video/wO0A0XcWy88/w-d-xo.html ) hit the US on 14 and made number one in Canada in 1984.

David Bowie era un genio. Lo descubrí de pequeña Gracias a la película Labyrinth. Por el me encanta el glam rock. Está tiene un rollo muy psicodélico. Rock progresivo total. Nirvana tiene un cover de él the man who sold the world.

Tony Visconti produced most of Bowie's early work, including the album this track came from ("David Bowie," later retitled "Space Oddity"), but he didn't produce this particular track as he thought it was a novelty song Bowie wrote just to take advantage of the topical space programme at the time, so it was produced by Gus Dudgeon instead (he later did Elton John's biggest albums) who did an amazing job...
PS The character of Major Tom reappeared later in Bowie's songs "Ashes To Ashes" and "Hallo Spaceboy"

you need to react to Arcade Fire, dereck. David Bowie was a huge fan of them. Wake up or Tunnels (both in live) for an introduction to them would be perfect 😉
