    Sam's having waaaay more fun in the $350 Hobie than 99.9% of the million dollar marina cats. 👍

    I'm amazed to see this video, since I also bought many cats for cheap. The last one, was a Hobie 18, I got for $400., with a nice trailer. I now have 8 cats, and was overwhelmed with fixing them up, and storing them. So last year, I started watching your videos, and thinking about getting just one boat, like your mono hull ! And to see you and your friend sail it, was inspirational. You made it look so simple. I learned a lot about that, and the attitude needed for sailing, in general. Also, last year, I tried to get a friend of mine, to go sailing in the Fla. Keys, for a week of sailing and camping, but he declined. So I'm very interested in watching your next videos. I live in Miami, and know how good the sailing is in the Keys. Thanks for the videos. And if anyone reading this needs a catamaran or windsurfer, in South Fla., let me know.

      After reading "I now have 8 cats...", my first thought was " so he's a crazy cat lady... but not a lady". All of my envy, dear sir! I hope you're enjoying them and find a good mate in your region who'll join you on your trip to the keys.

      @@mcouture8169 Thanks. Coincidentally, I just got a phone call from my sister. She married a guy, who sailed around the Caribbean, for two years, on his sailboat. I am hoping to sail soon, but my vehicle is broken down, and I can't get to the water. I'm having time to work on them, at least.

    Love Hobbies. Sailed an 18 in San Francisco. Often 25 kts plus. Screaming accross the bay and even under the Golden Gate. What kick ass boats they are. And amazingly seaworthy. Wow, sail to Hawaii on a 23 foot sailboat, sail accross the Atlantic and up to Norway in a Cape Dory 28. Get your Sailplane Certification and do some acrobatics; and what next? Off course an adventure on a Hobby Cat! Love it.

    I’ve been Hobie 16 sailing for 35 years and I still love it. I flying a hull is a blast. Once you get your proper jib, just remember when tacking, that you need to backwind the jib for a second before breaking the sheet. Have fun!!!

    I have been racing/sailing beach cats for a while now and this looks like a fun h16. Just to let you know, the trampoline is not on the boat correctly. the threading is meant to go up the center of the boat. this trampoline seems to have been put on at an angle. it will help with overall stiffness, speed, and make it easier to sit on if you remove it and redo it. Cant wait to see some Hobie cat camping. Lots of fun! Joseph Bennett has TONS of good videos on techniques for sailing these boats. I recommend checking out his videos on trapezing. It will make it a lot easier to get in and out of the boat in higher wind speeds if you use a better technique. Thanks for the video. Stay safe!

    • @Dlawler
      @Dlawler 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It looks like it a case of, the tramp is correctly on the way it was made to fit, you can't simply rotate a tramp 45degs and fit it. I'll personally replace it with a normal style one. But you can't exactly say it's fitted incorrectly and simply remove and refit it, as it simply wouldn't work that way

    Sam, I clean my sails by soaking them in a large sturdy garbage can with Tide and Oxyclean. Does a great job. DO NOT pour the contents out on the lawn, it will kill everything and you will need to replace the dirt to grow there again.

  • @markgallagher1376
    @markgallagher1376 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I always set my Hobie 16 up on the beach to avoid dropping that crucial piece in the water. Everyone does that at least once. If you don’t drop the pin you drop the split ring. Definitely get the correct jib if you can. You will go faster and it will help a lot with tacking. Just beware of the pitch pole down wind.

    I grew up with a Hobie 16 with a 1.5 turbo jib (genoa). Raced in Marine Stadium (Long Beach) as a kid. Whenever I'm in serious trouble on a sailboat I always revert back to those experiences and my gladiator days in the Stadium. Your sailing will improve immensely. Basically you sheet her in and stand on the flying hull moving forward and aft (while in the bucket) as needed to avoid pitchpole. You need a tiller extension to be able to do it solo. I went from Hobies as a kid to J-boats as an adult and am a MORC East Coast Champion (PHRF-C).
    I've watched you for years now and always think you would make a good glider pilot. You have the necessary mental calmness and some flight experience. Get your powered license (so you can tow) and then your glider license. You would make a fine glider pilot, I'm sure of it. Your friend Zoe is cute and sporty.

    A video I'd like to see would involve making a boat capable of long term remote camping. Maybe combining your Hobie 16 with the largest canoe you can find to make a quick to assemble camping trimaran. It could carry the weight of a lot of extra provisions and a small outboard and still be beachable and great for exploring. There's a ton of cheap hobie's and canoes and might make for a lot of fun for a lot of people for about $1000 and a couple days work.
