    Important note....Joe is wearing a PFD despite the fact that there is pretty much a zero chance of capsizing. It's just a good habit to get used to.

      Personal Floatation Device ... Life vest even. Especially good when sailing a boat with a boom and you get bonked into unconsciousness by the boom on the way into the water 💧 🙌 👌 😀

      For sure, always a good plan.
      It should be automatic - going sailing? Put it on.

    • @patrickf4839
      @patrickf4839 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      First off, most people go over board because they fall off, not a capsize. Second, that boat can absolutely capsize

    • @stevenvachon9745
      @stevenvachon9745 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Umm, that is Joseph Bennett on the helm, he won't fall off and he won't capsize the boat.

    sorry I'm back just got back from my sailmaker/repair people and he said it's WAY cheaper for me to send in my sails without battens get analysis and likely repairs, and windows installed, then drive up to pick them up (because the length of the battens I need increases the cost of shipping). just thought I'd throw that in there for anyone thinking about replacing old sails. another good one, joe!

    Ive had a catalina 25 for 4 years and have fallen in love with sailing. I want to get a Hobie now. I think it'll be a blast and that I could learn about sailing from it as well.

      Yes, with the cat, I think you'd find it more directly related to the sea an wind (if that makes sense)
      Also, faster and more exciting!!

    good calm description, making a successful tack instead of getting into irons is nice, of course knowing how to sail a hobie a bit backwards is another skill to learn for a new sailor. (alumni of the 1992 Formosa Sailing Challenge series- fun times on boats/ Hobie 16)

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Backwards is definitely important!!! Thanks

    • @bradaltemeyer4472
      @bradaltemeyer4472 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      boomless is absolutely a safer trend, but with the boom it was easy enough to hold the boom against the wind and back the boat up (sailing backwards) but many leave the jib cleated to the ?upwind? side to help push the bow over if momentum alone is insufficient, or the helmsman stopped the boat by throwing the helm hard over.@@JoyriderTV

    Hi there. I just got a hobiecat catamaran. Upon travelling a long distance home, I realized there was no boom with it. Do cat's have/ need a boom? I have seen some with one and others without one. Thanks.

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi There,
      not all hobie cats need a boom.
      The Hobie 16 with the standard sail should have a boom, but if it's a 16 easy sail or a 15 then there's no boom required.

    What is the minimum age you recommend to take a kid hobie sailing? (Assuming he knows how to swim?). I am a father of 5 year old. I am know how sail Hobies (C class), but I am not sure if it might be too much for a 5 year old.

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As long as you feel in control of the boat, it's not too windy (sub 10 knots) and you have a life jacket for the child then I think that you're good to go.
      As long as it's warm enough too - you don't want to put your child off by it being too cold.

    Thanks Joe, well sorted out especially with the other guy inserted for focus and topic clarity. I see the trolley wheel markings along the hull from your launch video. What to you find removes this the easiest? At the beginning of a season I use Muriatic acid with a solid rinse, but I wouldn't want to use that stuff so close to the water. Oxalic acid products don't really have much effect.

      Hobie 15:
      more volume
      skeg hulls = easier manoeuvring
      smaller and less powerful
      no boom

      @@JoyriderTV Any kind of sport has rules which make the sport unique like soccer, baseball, and tennis, and sailing also has these rules that explain the sport from equipment to practice, although there are many kinds of sailboat out there, they all have very similar rules. but all of them have halyards and sheets, or rudders and keels (you could explain why a catamarans have no keels and and daggerboards). The worst thing you can tell someone in a catamaran make a right turn when it prepare to tack to starboard.
