Looks good. Tip for next time. It'll be easier (and cleaner on your crossovers) to drill out those speaker screw holes before assembling the box, and to sand the box before adding the crossover.
Would love to do something like this, I have the cabinet making skills, but the crossover is the stumbling block for me, you're lucky to have had it designed & built for you. I need to gather a lot more knowledge before I can do that.
But, why no bass reflex? it help a lot not only for a deep bass but also for release the pressure from inside of the speakers and reducing the distortion chances/amount!
@@Orpheuss62 I agree with you there, Having bass ports does amplifier the bass effects, makes it sound deeper and fuller. Tho sealed enclosure does offer a tight sound signature and punchy boxy bass. So It depends on people's taste. Me personally I would use bass ports too :)
I really enjoyed watching this process. I am new just getting into home audio and I am going to try to build a pair of bookshelf speakers and I was just wondering if you could change anything about these speakers looking back would you? Also do they have good bass without being ported? Thank you very much for doing this video.
No reflex? Have you taken an on and off axis response? Would love to see that data on these build. Seems like the box is going to rumble itself apart with no porting. Did you spec out the crossover with the driver stats in XSIM?
Last year I made a pair of tower speakers (MDF enclosures) and I only used wood glue and clamps and even a heavy pair of bookshelf speakers to help with the clamping. No screws. I tuned the boxes by ear.
I am getting ready to do a Overnight Sensations build (my 1st). would be cool if you included a detailed parts list for your custom builds. Especially for the custom crossovers.
Exactly, the insulation will give the air inside the cabinet a longer travel wich will give the speaker sound like it had a bigger cabinet and a lot less "boxy" sounding too.
Could you please give the model numbers for the speakers and the crossover components you used? These look really nice and I'd like to build an active version of them with Bluetooth for my sister.
They are designed for the speakers specifically instead of just designed for a large variety or speakers. All in all they sound better. 123Toid explains this in detail on his channel :)
In order to get the best sound from any drivers, you need a custom crossover designed. There's to much to go into right here, but Impulse Audio had a great video on prebuilt crossovers versus custom.
@@Toid this just made me smile. It's so nice to see everyone mentioning each other. Jack mentions Toid and Toid mentions Impulse Audio :) I feel like the DIY audio community on TH-cam is really going right now.
I noticed that you didn't use anything to seal under the speakers. I know the tweeters don't have any sealant material under them, but I couldn't tell is the woofers did. I'd be worried about air leaks. Chuffing sucks.
Funny thing is, you did the same thing as me with the center channel. I did not have enough room for a fancy mid, tweet, mid center speaker in my room, so I did what you did and went for a regular bookshelf speaker. I do not see any obvious improvements of having 2 woofers on the side of my center instead of just one on the bottom. After all, the tweeter really decides if your dialogue sounds clear, crisp, or just muffled. Good move not wasting money on 2 woofers.
general specific you are absolutely correct. I do not have a midrange in mine, but the Polk Audio t15 I used gas a midwoofer and a silk dome tweeter. It certainly sounds like it contains a midrange, and I am happy with it until I can find something slightly more pricy. The earlier Paradigm Atom (using earlier paradigm titans for left and right) are apparently better after a refoam, like I did to my titans, and will match more.
Fantastic DIY video, great project, very nice speakers! Please, if you can, suggest me a Dayton full range 3.5" or 4" or another of the same category to match it with a Peerless 6.5" woofer, no tweeter, I want to make experimental studio monitors, just for fun ! Thank you very much !

@@Doublsmmm the brace only reduces some of box vibrations, sorry all Acoustic Research boxes were filled with dampening material and they did know something about sealed boxes
The Esoteric series speakers have state-of-the-art bass. Duke Lejeune of AudioKinesis told me they have the best bass he has heard in a 6.5-7" size class speaker. They are not a cheap driver, and it is important that you try to chamfer the back side of the baffle around the woofer cutout if you can, to help with airflow through the frame windows between the cone and spider landings.
Maybe he's really worried about size? I'm in the process of designing some bookshelf speakers with the Reference Series 6" woofer and the enclosure is a little over 8 liters...
@@ELMtreeProductions im currently also in a similar proces, except with the 7'' reference series and ported, and i think i'll go with 36 liters, because my size limitations allow it, and i want to tune the speakers to arround 30 hz or so
If you think you need all this tools to make a speaker box, then I'm just going to tell you that you're wrong I made a ported subwoofer box with only a hand saw wood glue, and it sounds awesome the bass that is producing is clear and great and there's not an airflow issue
You can do simple cabinetry, or you can do complex cabinetry. As long as you have a sealed chamber, and a baffle that is reasonably flat and free of obstructions at the corners, then you're fine. It's up to you and what you like.
Hi Doublsmm, I really like the components used in the crossover! That important topic is often missverstanden or underrated. Did you measure up the frequency response? Last question: Why did you chose a closed design? I think the woofer is designed for a ported speaker.
Hi nice job! I'm also going to rebuild an old set of bookshelves. But I was also wondering why you didn't put in a port? Are they necessary? I'm new at this too👍
I was going to add a similar comment. I've seen 123Toid show these speaker combos as well, but it would be great to get a review of them in comparison to commercially available bookshelves at the same cost. What did these come out to? About $500 or more?
