@hidavidwen it's so hard to see stars properly in todays time. What a pity because it's such a beautiful experience!

One of my favorite cycling tours from Amsterdam is the circle around the Markermeer. I do it in three legs because I do it on a regular city bike and its around 60 km a day. You can do it clock or counterclockwise but it goes like this:
Day 1 : Amsterdam - Hoorn. The idea is that you hug the coastline as much as possible so you'll follow the dikes along Durgerdam, Uitdam, Monnickendam, Volendam and Edam (yeah thats alot of dam 🙂) up to Hoorn. There you can just park your bike at the trainstation and take a direct train or bus back to the city.
Day 2: Hoorn to Lelystad. This is probably the most scenic leg. First you follow the dike along the shoreline to Enkhuizen. The bikepath is right on top of the dike so the views are amazing, and then after that comes the best part: The dike from Enkhuizen to Lelystad right through the middle of the lake. On the one side youll have the Markermeer, on the other the IJsselmeer. Then again, from Lelystad main station take a direct train back to Amsterdam.
Day 3: Lelystad- Amsterdam. First you cycle through the Oostvaardersplassen, a beautiful National Park with loads of birds and lakes. Then in Almere, youll cross the giant bridge back to North Holland. Then you can cycle through Muiden, see the famous castle and from there its only about an hour back in to the city.
This 3 day tour really offers the best the country has to offer in my opinion: Beatiful ancient cities like Edam, Hoorn, Enkhuizen and Muiden. Beautiful national parks and a lot of water and the typical big Dutch skies. The only challenging bit is the dike between Enkhuizen and Lelystad. Its about 30 km long and you really really dont want to get a flat tire there. There are no towns or public transportation stops in between so if anything happens, be prepared for a loooooong walk. Its a pretty popular route though so other people might be able to help you out if something goes wrong. Anyways, thats my favorite bike tour. Done it three times the last couple of years and its just a joy. Oh another thing, you probably dont want to do this when its windy. Youll be very much out in the open unprotected so if you have strong headwinds its pretty tough, but other than that, its just the best.

Thanks for sharing! I had a friend visit a few weeks ago, and we went to Marken from Amsterdam. But I'll try one of your suggestions next time someone visits (if someone is brave enough to do 60km with me)

Nice little trip! (And you didn’t even get to visit Oudeschild and Den Hoorn.) The wadden islands are one of my favorite nearby destinations. They’re all quite unique and different, but Texel is by far the most ‘domesticated’ of the bunch. We (me, partner, toddler) often go there for a weekend or even a whole week. Even if the weather is disappointing, there are plenty of indoor options as well. Vlieland and Schiermonnikoog feel a lot more remote especially off season. These smaller islands both have just a single little town and the remainder is nature.

Yes I loved it! I got really lucky...sunny day in November?! I'm excited to visit more of them (hopefully this year)...thanks for the comment (been a long week and watching this video again of the island gave me a lot more positive emotions)

The Slufter is an area where the sand dunes are opened up, on purpose, to bring a piece of the old nature back. The bunker is part of the Atlantic wall, you'll find them all along the coast.

    i have a few questions,
do u like USA or Europe better and which is a better place to live,
do u like europe more than china?

    • @hi.davidwen
      @hi.davidwen  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey - sorry for the late reply. Busy with holidays. Oh those are big questions. It's hard to say. USA and Europe are also very big...so hard to make a comparison. My comparison point is living in San Francisco/LA vs living in Amsterdam...the thing I like most about Europe is traveling...within an 1-3 hours flight, you can get to most countries. I could drive 7 hours and still be in the same state in the US and same language. I also like the work culture here in that people get more vacation (and balance), and they take them.
I do miss California though-it has everything I need-nature, mountains, summer and snow sports, beaches, good food, diverse cultures, great weather, and a good economy/jobs.
But Europe is an experience. A different experience. I'm still trying to figure out where 'home' is but...it's been a great educational experience so far.
As for Europe vs. China. I can't say much on that as I've never lived in China for a long period of time.
      Happy new year!

Terschelling, Ameland, Schiermonnikoog and Vlieland are 20x betters than Texel tbh.. i mean, its great that you visited an Island here.. but for the life of me i never understand why tourists always go Texel. Why choose this over the other options? Its almost like a polder. Terschelling is easily the most beautifull, with the best beach restaurants, small villages, eateries, nature reserves and so on. I don’t mean to be negative! I love your imagery, narration and your general vibe. You deserve the best of what the Netherlands has to offer. ;) Please visit the other ones too! If you are able that is.

Thanks for the recommendations! I went to Texel for a work trip and then decided to take some time off ...but I definitely hope to visit the other islands now. I just remember seeing the stars at night...and I had not seen them in a while, beautiful...I need these trips away from busy city life!
And appreciate your kind words =)

    • @PaulaBean

Texel, however, is the most easily reached wadden-island from Amsterdam. Imagine someone from Amsterdam having to travel to Schier. First, two hour train to Groningen, then one hour bus to Lauwersoog, then 45 minute ferry to Schiermonnikoog, then 15 minute transfer to Schiermonnikoog-village (the only village on the island).
