    In this video:
    While David Belle is unquestionably known as the original innovator and spiritual figurehead of parkour, the discipline’s origins can be traced directly back to his father, Raymond, and his time as a child in Vietnam. Though details surrounding Raymond’s early life are rather hazy, it’s generally accepted that he was separated from his parents during the First Indochina War and taken in by the French military in the city of Da Lat as an orphan at just age 7 in 1946. According to later interviews with his son, Raymond was routinely abused as a child, which motivated him to become as physically fit and strong as possible so that he could protect himself and escape danger if it ever presented itself.

    One note of import: Parkour existed before Parkour existed. In other words, people were - at various times - utilizing many of the techniques showcased in Parkour. For example, Chinese stuntmen were often tasked with running up walls, climbing them quickly, running along ledges, jumping from great heights, and even running along walls - all with a smoothness that belied the actual difficulty involved. These stuntmen were often attempting to recreate the tales from their own culture - tales we've seen in other ancient cultures as well.
    The idea of someone traversing their environment in the most direct, efficient manner while exhibiting total mastery of their body? Not new at all. Parkour simply codified these things into a single art and then popularized them through exhibition and film.

    Anyone who wants a fast, fun, pulp action film with a ton of parkour I'd recommend District 13 (Or in its original French, Banlieue 13 - iirc the English dubbing might not be great, so subtitles might be preferred!), which stars David Belle. It's no award winner or anything, but it is pretty satisfying to watch after a couple of drinks - essentially just a series of shots of a crazy French guy throwing himself between buildings as random henchmen try to take him out.

    • @Egeslean
      @Egeslean 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I watched that some years ago, and believe it or not, it was my first introduction to parkour. I was blown away by what they did in the movie, but you're right, its story isn't an award winner by any stretch. A very fun watch though.

      Its not a crazy french guy throwing himself between gaps thats David Belle...the guy talked about in the video. The man deemed the founder of Free running Seb Foucan is the villain Bond chases in Casino Royale. Both movies have incredible chase scenes. I give the winner to David because his character got away and there was no cables or pads all legit. Seb used cables for when they were on the cranes for safety obviously but it was still a crazy feat the jump was real.

  • @shade9592

    A war orphan, abused in the military, secretly training at night with obstacle courses of his own design...It is almost like a super hero origin story. I guess firefighters are like real life heroes already, but please tell me there was a time this man used his skills to run down a thief or rescue hostages who were being held up, that would make it even cooler.

      Tolerance for harsh weather. In case you were captured lost your clothes and broke free to get away. Just a guess though.

    More importantly: Why?

    • @prefix253
      @prefix253 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To improve mental and physical health in a natural way. To attempt achieving maximum athleticism. To be more confident and learn how to traverse an environment in the quickest and most efficient way possible. So that if you ever need to, you have the ability to do so. "Why not?" would be the better question.

    03:20 ...Uh, no, he did not remove "a Vietnamese flag"; he removed a Commie rag.
    If there had been a swastika flag flown from the Notre Dame that had been removed, would you be saying that he removed "a German flag"? ....Somehow I doubt that's how you would have described it. (Your description of this incident is devoid of the reason as to why it was put there, in the first place, and why the French state took extraordinary measures to get it down speedily. It would make no sense to risk a man like they did to haul it down if it had been a Republic of Vietnam flag; they would have done it in a less risky but more time consuming way in that case.)
