    In this video:
Few occupations from history are as maligned as that of Medieval-era executioner. Popularly painted as gleeful dispensers of death and torture, the truth seems to be that many executioners throughout this period usually treated the occupation with a certain reverence and exhibited an extreme dedication to duty. Beyond trying to minimize the suffering of those slated to be executed, this was, among other reasons we’ll get into, because it would often mean the life of the executioner if they ever botched an execution or otherwise weren’t extremely professional in carrying out their job.

And also it was a crime to desecrate corpses even unpure corpses, and they were to be buried outside of the church yard, as they weren't allowed to be buried on hallow soil.

In the town near me (Bolton) there is an executioners skull (George Whowell) in a pub (The pack horse). The story going that the executioner (known as a headsman back then for obvious reasons) had exacuted the 7th Earl of Derby (in 1651) due to his involvement in a massacre during the english civil war in the (Bolton) town. When the Duke was captured, a fitting death for him was made, that was to be taken back to the town and be executed by George who had his wife and children murdered in the massacre.
No one knows how they got the skull, some say revenge by the family of the Earl, but either way it is quite Ironic for an executioner and headsman no less, to be remembered this way.

Right? Now I'm wondering where the idea that executioners wore black bag like masks on their heads during executions, (to hide their identity, which was apparently well known by all the towns folk so they can avoid socializing or eating with them.)
So, why and where and when, did the concept of the masked (and usually well muscled, large built physic.) executioner come into play?
Also, I'm curious if there were many, if any, female executioners. And if so, when about was the first one employed? I would think they would prefer the men to chop off someone's head. Including the condemned. Haha. Although, if it came to flogging, I think most would prefer a woman to do it. As men tend to have more muscle mass and an over all higher strength percentage.
Now we need a follow up video for all these questions! Haha.

      @kanonierable 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@kari7403 The mere idea of a female executioner is obscene by itself, beside that the job requires considerable physical strength. The hood is something that comes into play when you have to execute a person of high profile and the regular hangman would refuse to do the job. Like for example in case of the delinquent being of royal blood or even a king, as in the case of the dethroned British monarch Charles I. It was not easy then to find a person who was willing to do the job as the spilling of royal blood violated very strong religious and other deep rooted traditional taboos. Another reason to hide your identity was because of the extremely high chance that the remaining followers of the dead king would seek bloody revenge on anyone who laid hands on the sacred person of the monarch that had been chosen by the grace of God.

Well I have a strange little story of my own,.....interested well we hope you will be.
Firstly as a young child I was sickly and led a quiet sort of childhood, as I spent a lot of time recovering from being very poorly, I was always starting with some sort of ailment or other.
I spent a lot of time in a local sweet shop looking at the sweets that nice as they were I could not eat without being very ill for the day or even the week. This village shop was run by a lovely family who told me they had a selection of sweets that they made themselves, to my eternal joy I found that most of these sweets I could eat without getting ill. So I regularly called into the shop for the odd little treat like most children do.
I got to know the family and was fascinated by the older father of the family, he always seemed a very intelligent and well educated man, someone you wouldn't be surprised to find out was a professor. I thought many times to myself one day they will tell me what he used to do and I will be amazed, he will have climbed mount Everest or descovered a new element or invented some wonderful thing or other he will be a famous man in his time. I often skipped home dreaming of the day I would find out why once upon a time he had been famous. Well it was all very exciting.
Then to my sadness the family never got round to telling me before me and my family moved far away.
Years later when I myself was much older by accident I read a book about the history of Courts, I was a court officer myself and fascinated by history.
Finally I did find out what this wonderful man had done that had made him a very famous man. Though in a kind of secret way. I doubt that in a thousand lifetimes I would have ever guessed what he did.
Still chills me now what I found out that afternoon. My friend that had so fascinated me with his chit chat and busily run his little sweet shop in our little village where years and years before he was the areas hangman. M

In regards to kindness, you don't show people kindness to feel good about yourself but because you yourself are kind. And your kindness is either the result of your understanding of other people's actions or if false, then it is a result of you taking into consideration the possibility of yourself being in the wrong with the actions which you are about to do to another. Being "so bad" is a subjective concept as one ending up on a death row =/= one being the evil incarnate but one going against the norm (e.g., in islam, apostasy = death and a muslim doubting islam = apostasy).
And in absolutely the worst case scenario...
People live their lives to the best of their abilities while trying to overcome their short comings. However, without realising what our short comings are, you cannot overcome them. So even if one was "absolutely so bad", then his/her lack of knowledge of what is "absolutely so good" was the result of his/her total ignorance of what that is, which already made his/her life a living hell. Therefore, to send them off to their deaths with the hopes of having just one good memory of this life is the least that you could do for them, even if they could not appreciate your gesture because they are incapable percieving kindness.
You will do that because you are kind and you are kind because you understand. And since your mother does not understand, then she is "kind" only to those whom she likes so should she stop liking them, then she would also stop to show her "kindness" toward them.
      Cheers.

A lot of old houses in Germany that are or were used as pubs or restaurants had a so-called "Henkerhaken" ("hangman's hook") on a nail hammered into the wall at a far-off corner of the room. The idea was to fasten a beer mug on a chain there because only the town's hangman was allowed to eat there - as mentioned in the video, no other people were allowed at the table - and nobody was allowed to drink from his mug.

    "Fun"fact
The german Executioner named Rosenfeld, who had the duty to kill the Pirate Klaus Störtebeker and his 72 men crew, had a bargain with Störtebeker. The Mayor sat the deal. He would behead him, and the headless body of Störtebcker would standup and walk over to his men. The men he passed before "Störtebekers dead body" drop on the floor, should be free. Acording to legends, Störtebeker walked by 11! of his men before the Executioner got angry and pulled him a leg. The Mayor than said "I dont do bargains with pirates, Executioner kill them" So he did and in a few minutes he had all the crew killed and he was so quick and all 73 had been executed perfectly. The City-Counsil were speechless and ask him how he could be so professional with so many men?
Proud of his work Rosenfeld answerd "Thats nothing, he could also behead the whole Counil before getting tired" Theese were his last words.......the Counsilmembers did not like the sound of that, and one member executed Rosenfeld on the spot.
