Your tedtalk not only saved my life but made me financially free. I lived on the streets listening to this. Fr this saved my life and changed it and made my success. I owe you everything. I was an addict ready to take my life but you truly saved me life and I'm in such a great spot I can't believe it. Thank you SO much
So true! My dad taught me this as I was growing up. I had trouble reading and have ADD but with enough effort, anything is possible. I was held back in elementary school but now I am a 4.0 student and am just 2 years from becoming a doctor. This is so important.
Thank you! I would start with going to all of your classes. Never miss class. Take thorough notes but be sure to pay good attention to what your professor says. Sit up front (it helps reduce distractions which are a problem for me). Get to know your professors. Aim for them all to know you by your first name. Talk to them after class (if they allow) with well constructed questions you made during class. And don't be afraid to ask questions during class. If you were paying close attention in class and still have a question, chance are the majority of the class is wondering the same thing. Never ask questions just for the purpose of sounding smart. There's always one student who does this and that just takes away from the valuable time your professor can spend going over relevant material or answering good questions. Make sure to visit your professor in their office hours. Only come to them with thoughtful questions you have formulated after going over their notes. Often times, after going over the lecture notes on your own, you will answer many of your own questions. The remaining questions are the ones you should bring to your prof. They will notice that your questions are well thought out and that you have already read the material and tried on your own. 99% (100% in my case) of profs will notice this and be willing to spend the time with you required to clear up your concerns. You can seek tutoring. I am a tutor at my University and am paid by the University. At my school and many others, tutoring services are free to students. Look over the syllabus. It is a contract between the student and the institution and thus cannot be broken. Here you will find out exam dates, homework assignments and due dates, and the value (% of the total course) that these assignments and exams are worth. Use these numbers to prioritize your time (spend more time studying for the final that is worth 70% of your grade than you spend writing a paper worth 10% of the course). Be organized. Move all exam and assignment due dates from all of your course syllabuses to one calendar. You always want to be aware of then things are due and plan ahead to be sure you have enough time to study for them or complete assignments. Start assignments and start studying early. Work hard even on the small assignments and tests. They really add up. I aim to get 100% on my assignments because if you do them soon enough, you can have them looked over by profs, TAs, or fellow students before handing them in. Try to do your best on the early exams. Chances are there wont be too much "competition" in the form of other exams/assignments so there is no excuse to not do well. You will thank yourself later in finals week(s) when you don't have much time to study. Going into finals week with good grades assures you that you will pass/get the grade you are working for. Focus your efforts. If your professor gives lecture notes and assigned readings, chances are the test questions are going to come mostly from the lecture notes. Try to do all of the readings as well, but if you had to chose to study just on or the other, go with the notes (as long as they are detailed). If you are unsure of where the bulk of the test material comes from, just ask our prof. This is where it helps to be on a first name basis. This info may very well be in the syllabus as well. Don't get burned out! Have a social life. Make good friends that are driven and have goals. Keep in contact with your friends and family back home. Take time every day to work out/exercise. This will make you a better student/individual on many levels (google "endorphins", its pretty cool!). You will have more energy and mental alertness. You will be able to benefit more from lectures and have to study less afterwards. You will be healthier and happier. Push yourself. Volunteer. Join clubs or intramural sports teams. Exercise. Make time for friends and family. Maybe even get a part time job. And study hard! You might not think you have time for all of this but you do. Maybe not all in your first year, but you do. The human mind is an amazing thing. Our brains have a quality called "plasticity". This means that we have the ability to adapt to our current situation. Always push your limits. Maybe start by just studying harder and exercising daily. If you put the effort in and push yourself daily, eventually you will be able to volunteer, work, spend time with the ones you love, and get top marks. Personally, I work at a gym and as a tutor, I work out daily, I try to make it to every class, I study every day, and I know all of my professors personally. I make sure to make time for my friends and family. I almost never feel stressed out! I am certainly not trying to brag but I want to motivate you. I was the dyslexic kid with ADD that was pulled out of grade 2 and had to redo grade 7. Since then I worked hard every day. My dad taught me how to put effort into everything I did. It didn't come fast but it got better. I graduated high school with honors but undergraduate university was hard. I was by no means the top student. I worked hard and exercised regularly (it really helps!). Eventually, in my last semester, i was able to volunteer, tutor, play intramural basketball, workout, spend more time with friends and family, and for the first time, got straight As. Since then, I have been in graduate school for 2 years with an average GPA of 4.0. Chances are, you were not held back in elementary school. You're probably already off to a better start than I was! It is all about effort. The old saying is, "you reap what you sow". That means that you will get back what you put in. If you spend all of your time putting in marginal effort, you will master mediocrity. If you put maximal effort into everything you do, you will see gains in your abilities. This applies to your studies, your work, your work in the gym, and your relationships. Here is a motto/verse that I live by "everything your hand finds to do, do it with all of your might". This is essentially what this video was all about and will make a huge difference across all aspects of your life! Good Luck with your studies!
I also have ADD, and struggle to concentrate at school. It usually ends up with me working extra hard to achieve the grades that my mates get regularly, without working much. Are there any methods I can use to concentrate better in lessons?
British Person that sounds familiar to me! Just keep up the hard work. It will get better with time as long as you put the effort in every day. Each time you find yourself distracted, don't beat yourself up about it. Instead, be happy that you're back on track and aim to catch yourself earlier next time. Just like anything in life, the more you practice, the more proficient you will become in the task at hand. When studying, you could try studying with a friend that understands your predisposition to lose focus and will not likely distract you. You could ask them to keep you accountable to stay on task. They will be able to get you back in track if need be but more importantly, you will be less prone to become distracted if you are subconsciously aware of someone watching for you. You could also study in areas where the environment is productive and where people will see you if you are not working on the task at hand. For example, I study in the library where I feel people would notice if I took a 2 hour " TH-cam break". I am less prone to become and stay distracted in such an environment as a library than I am at home in my room because there is a precedent set in the library. People are there to research and get work done. During class, sitting up front really helps me. There are way less distractions up front. You could always talk to your doctor about pharmaceutical options but this isn't always necessary. It is amazing what can be done with effort and willpower if applied regularly and relentlessly. Best of luck!
My Mom used to always say: " Life is just froth and bubble, Two things stand like stone. Kindness in another's trouble and Courage in your own ". Courage to stand up and start over by making the Effort regardless of what may lie ahead of you! God Bless!
I love this video! I'm a music teacher; I tell my students two things which are posted on the wall. #1 The magic word is "YET", meaning, they are not allowed to say the phrase, "I can't" in my classroom unless they add the magic word ... "yet". They must give themselves the time they need for their own success. And, #2: Our mantra in class is, "This is easy, I can do this." , which I make they say before they perform for each other, because we need the right mindset to build our own confidence. Effort is the machine that leads to our success, and believing in your effort fuels that machine. Nice job, Mr. Moodie.
So true, that's exactly how I graduated 6th grade. I aced all my tests but didn't do the homework, until summer vacation. Teacher said to pass I had to do this book college algebra over the summer. I put in the effort. After that math all the way through high school was a breeze.
I wish I learned this early in high school. I hated being with students who barely passes the class so I just decided to not put in effort in everything. I wish I didn’t think this way in high school 😢
I am... The exact same guy. The top of the top, probably overall the smartest, most happiest human being in my elementary school. Until junior high, it was almost the complete opposite. Through years of perseverance, failure, and effort, I was able to be with the top few people again. That, is what a successful journey with a successful student academic life should look like. I hope it happens to you. To me, to everyone
This is so helpful when considering student success! Success is not just about intelligence; students begin to become successful when they invest the effort in themselves and their work. Great tips!
Yes, my father used to say that nobody is born with talent from the womb itself and everybody starts from 0, it all depends on how much work they have put in to come that far. An outside person just sees those amazing skills and calls it talent, but he never saw how much effort it takes to build that skill. So stop worrying that you don't have talent, instead keep working you will succeed
He goes to my shul and I love him beyond belief- his family is wonderful, and he is such an amazing person. Like, however awesome he is in this video, he is better in real life... one of the most genuinely kind people I know. CBSCS pride!
Arel is my hero, and one of the best people I know. His message here is vital for people of all ages who are lost and need to find their way. Pick your path, and work to your goal. Effort, man. It's phenomenal.
I began school through Florida Abeka Book homeschooling , i am finding more and more each day , I counsel with my mom and people on different platforms , staying focused is not easy at times
I am so lucky being involve with this kind of positivity. It feels like I got an opportunity to have a head start. Btw, I am 16 years old. And I promise!! I’ll be a successful guy before 20.
OMG!!! This concept is the whole truth. Although I receive good grades in college, I am far from smart. I have been putting in effort all this time. Thank you for sharing this video. Thank you for blessing us with your knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. The key is putting forth the effort. Question, did you ever get your dream house & car your dad told you that you can have one day? I hope so!
Really it means a lot. I have been an average student in my school days till now but at the end of my school life this video helped me change my perspective over myself. Its important for all students like us to know the fact that none is different, all are same if you go deep into it.
A family member comes to mind, causing concern as they've been part of the family upbringing. Despite being talented, they seem to lack effort, not fully utilizing their abilities. It appears that they struggle with motivation and direction, hindering the realization of their potential. They need to shift from their fixed mindset to a growth mindset.
Man, he hit it right on the money! I'm one of the least smartest people in my college classes I didn't even graduate high school, but I'll be damned if I don't put in the extra effort and follow through with grit to be in 2 honor societies both state and national now!
I LOVE THIS MAN!! THIS is the very talk that I needed to see. I'm not sure why I haven't seen this sooner, but I'm so grateful that I came across this today and was able to share it with my students. Game changer!
WOOOOOW!!!! I love listening to this guy talk, it gives me this mad rush of motivation. Hey @TEDx Talks can you arrange to have do more of these talks from Arel Moodie please?
It might seem to be very simple and obvious video. But I was thinking about it recently. In my life I have never been confident. In a way that I would not be able to be successful in my life. I mean... even to be able to learn another language.. ( look at me now! I speak 4 languages ) I totally didn't believe in myself.... But more I did the things, than more I got an understanding that I can do EVERYTHING!! Like really everything! I didn't need to have a talent or something. I just had to want it strong and to have a determination. It is impressive that you get so obvious things only when u get older and you get experience and only after all things... that you push yourself though. Like really push. Because you don't believe in yourself, but you still push. And push and push! And only when you get what you were pushing yourself for, you understand WHAT was actually the reason why you got it at the end. For example. I have never been good with math. I mean ... I was always thinking that I just don't have a talent and that's it! There is nothing to talk about. BUT! When I am doing math now...Yes, It seems unbearable ! Impossible ! Especially, after so many years I didn't study it .. but I remind myself all the time... that it depends only on my effort and NOTHING ELSE. It is only ME who decides if I WANT or NOT. 😉
I actually don't share his point. Effort is NOT everything. Here is why: Of cause, you need effort. With zero effort, you don't start - and you can't win. Easy as that. That's important. But the thing about working on anything is, that you have to invest energy. And you don't have unlimited amounts of it. This is why you have to invest your energy smarter. This does not mean that you have to be smarter but that you have to train and master (at some point) methods of learning new skills to then execute them more efficiently. You might have heard this quote by A. Lincoln: "If I had eight hours to chop down a tree, I'd spend the first six to sharpen my axe" Life is a forest you have to chop down. You need the ultimate axe to reach certain places. So keep learning. And if your task was to sharpen the axe, You'd probably read up on axe sharpening axes six hours, wouldn't you? Anyway, if you don't have the effort to do so, if you're intelligent enough that you know but you don't start, you won't get anywhere. I think, this is Arel's point and this is what you should have got out of the video. So go out there and evolve. Now :)
"And I just did what I thought I should do: I shut my mouth." How many of our students, especially those from disadvantaged communities, have fallen into this trap? And it's SO easy to empathize with this strategy; most of us know intimately how effective "keeping your head down" can be in public situations that make us uncomfortable or that we perceive to be hostile. Some reading now know this more acutely than others. Some "know" it from popular culture. Some, we might imagine, are privileged enough to be oblivious to the strategy. But think of the harm to one's education and personal growth...
Absolutely right. An effort is behind everyone's success. Things may be tough and rough at first but making an effort is an investment that wouldn't be put on waste. We may not have the intelligence, skills, talent, confidence, source, or everything but doing something makes an impact and changes a thing. The more you strive, the more you progress. Success is not attained in just a day, but for what you do every day.
I need to make more 'Right Effort' in a few areas... "Success or failure, gain or loss, must, therefore, depend upon man's own exertions. The more he striveth, the greater will be his progress." ~ Baha'i Faith
This is fantastic advice. I've always lived in a fixed mindset that the rest of the class are smarter than me, and I just don't know things. But now I'm going into teaching, I have learned that learning is progressive and putting in that effort to reach those answers; regardless of the duration it takes me, I will eventually get it.
Once you graduate from university, you realize that certain conversations are worth more than all of your college classes combined. Being in the company of certain people and learning from them can have a greater effect on your life than memorizing facts enough to pass a test. I wouldn't say degrees are totally useless but education still has a long way to go from hypotheticals to practical real-life skills that can actually make you successful.
Wow! You nailed it again. I love your method of delivery and the message is always life changing. I just shared this with maybe 200 local leaders. When I hear a great message I want to share it with the world! You are truly gifted.
I have 7 questions about this video, can someone please answer them for me. 1. What were some of the "strange things" Arel Moodie did to pass his chemistry class? 2. What was the decision Arel made early on when he got to college? 3. What specific steps did Arel take to be successful in college? 4. Can you see yourself applying some of these steps to be successful in college and in your future career? 5. Arel talks about growth mindset and fixed mindset. What is the difference between the two? According to Arel and other educators, which mindset is the way to success? 6. According to Arel, the pathway to the growth mindset is? 7. What was your impression of the TEDx talk given by Arel Moodie? Describe some of the key points the speaker was trying to make? Were there parts of his talk that resonated with you? Do you see yourself trying to apply some of his concepts? Do you agree or disagree with the speaker's message that effort is the key to success or do you have a different philosophy you would like to share?
1. During lunch and before-after school, he'd go to tutoring and work with his tutor to understand the concepts well until he get's them right. he'd do same with practice problems everyday. 2. He made the decision that if he isn't smart and talent one, he'll simply outwork everyone else, he has no choice. 3. - he'd go to teacher office n make sure he understood the concepts. . -he'd go to teachers assistance for syllabus n things to make sure he got it right from the teachers method. . - he made friends with the smart kids in the class and did group study with them. 4.YES 5. growth mindset is when a person believes they can learn by putting efforts whereas fixed mindset people doesn't put in the efforts and think they already got all and it won't be getting better anyhow. Growth mindset. 6. pathway to growth mindset is EFFORTS. 7. by urself. i think this was an assignment of yours and it's already been a year. so, it's no use but i did anyways.
But HOW can we motivate more EFFORT in school? One way may be to HELP other students to learn. TEACH to LEARN, more? Thanks so much and good luck with your work.... H Rochester NY ===========================================================
Though I loved the talk, I have to disagree. Effort comes with a change in midset. How you see things determines how you approach it. Effort comes when you see obstacles as opportunities and the more you see yourself succeeding, the more effort you will put in.
This is great! I'd like to use it for my online community college class. We must follow the ADA laws for accessibility. The auto-generated captions are not sufficient. Would you please edit/correct the captions and ensure proper capitalization and punctuation so I can show this to my students?
Start with what you are good at doing or even just good-enough -- make a list; make a list of ideas/topics that you find yourself google searching/reading/watching about. With these two lists, are there any common features between them? When looking at features, google jobs that revolve around them. Ex. Feature is FOOD: Love food & watch food shows = maybe chef, food critic, restaurant owner l, etc. If interests are not there, look at how much money you feel content with making. Education level you see yourself reaching. Rule out subjects/fields you could never do or be in. Then search jobs of that income, edu level, etc.
If u want to find ur true passion, start learning new thing everyday..and one day u will find something that u cant stop learning. You will be just crazy to do that piece of work and learn more about it and eventually u will become good at it because u have put effort on it. Remember....once u stop learning ,u start dying..always learn something new in ur life...be a learner .. If u r not good at something ..it is because u don't know the right way to do it which u can always learn... We can learn anything and so we can do anything.... Keep learning....have a good day..:)
I really like this video and want to show it to my students. Unfortunately, the ADA accessibility requirements say that auto-generated captions are not good enough. Can you go through and update/fix them or turn on community contributions so we can? Thanks!
I agree almost with everything. But no matter how much effort you put into singing, for example,-you can't learn to have a great voice if you don't have it. Simple as that. It doesn't apply to everything.

Bro TH-cam send this to more people this is one of the best speeches I’ve watched. Come on now youtube
I was there at that event!! Talked to him afterwards, such a cool and down-to-earth guy.
wow, really?

Outstanding resourceful information!
I know how you feel sir
@Arel Moodie, if you ever happen to read this comment, thank you so much, exactly what I needed in my life right now.

It's been a year, what have you changed?

An outside person just sees those amazing skills and calls it talent, but he never saw how much effort it takes to build that skill. So stop worrying that you don't have talent, instead keep working you will succeed
He goes to my shul and I love him beyond belief- his family is wonderful, and he is such an amazing person. Like, however awesome he is in this video, he is better in real life... one of the most genuinely kind people I know. CBSCS pride!
Michale Schueler h
thank you i now have a new language and a new word for that thing that will help me be successful.
Now one of my favorites talks, thank you!
I am so lucky being involve with this kind of positivity. It feels like I got an opportunity to have a head start. Btw, I am 16 years old. And I promise!! I’ll be a successful guy before 20.
I love this man and his content. I believe anything is possible. Arel Moodie, you are best.
Listening to a ted talk in the morning feels amazing 🥰
no it doesn't
@@dipeshdebnathltd listen I didn't say anything about my life magically changing or achieving anything
I hope so!
That's so cute - go you
Really it means a lot.
BIG RELATE DUDE OMG, the math and science part esp
This is one of the best and practical speeches I have viewed on TEDx Talks. I can't wait to share it with my public speaking students.
Yea!!!!! Love this!!!
It might seem to be very simple and obvious video. But I was thinking about it recently.
In my life I have never been confident. In a way that I would not be able to be successful in my life. I mean... even to be able to learn another language.. ( look at me now! I speak 4 languages )
I totally didn't believe in myself....
Khazova Ru that was beautiful thank you.
So powerful 😩
I actually don't share his point. Effort is NOT everything.
Here is why:
Of cause, you need effort.
Lincoln:
"If I had eight hours to chop down a tree, I'd spend the first six to sharpen my axe"
Life is a forest you have to chop down.
Now :)
True True effort is everything
Such profound truth lies in this talk . Big thank you for sharing
this is so good that I had my family watch this video 3 times
This video is everything for becoming a successful student!
Are you a successful student yourself?
11:55 gosh !!the bunny ears!!! 😂 Sweet memories of teaching my one how to tie shoes!!!
BEST SPEECH EVER
Sir, that was amazing bless you.
Following him now! Good speaker. shared with my high school college readiness class.
He came to my school today
This is very inspiring, I love your story! Also, I recall the days of tieing shoes... I still wear sandals most of the time. Your a great speaker.
I need to make more 'Right Effort' in a few areas... "Success or failure, gain or loss, must, therefore, depend upon man's own exertions. The more he striveth, the greater will be his progress." ~ Baha'i Faith
Awesome! Marvellous! Fantastic! I'm really impressed of this talk! Really trilly impressive! 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
Hey Ted Team.... I think the volume has been pretty low in many of the videos. I think you should work on them
Get your ears cleaned up dude. It's perfect volume
Batshit Crazy I think he’s right the volume is very low
or turn up your volume
True. I have my volume on 100 on yt and the pc and wearing earbuds but still, can barely hear them talk.
@@sulkiestnewt7350 are u guys high? lol
Dattebayo!! 😊
Wow! You nailed it again. I love your method of delivery and the message is always life changing. I just shared this with maybe 200 local leaders. When I hear a great message I want to share it with the world! You are truly gifted.
It’s true I was the microphone!
Sooo good! Thanks Arel for leading by example.
okay, I don't know what you did but you motivated me to study better and put in more effort! thanks :D
Why doesn't this have millions of views by now?
Agreed ;)
You nailed it.❤
This is an amazing TedxTalk! Thank you.
4.YES
5. growth mindset is when a person believes they can learn by putting efforts whereas fixed mindset people doesn't put in the efforts and think they already got all and it won't be getting better anyhow. Growth mindset.
6. pathway to growth mindset is EFFORTS.
7. by urself.
i think this was an assignment of yours and it's already been a year.
so, it's no use but i did anyways.
Just makes sense...Amazing
Thxs for coming to our school

Thank you for a wonderful motivation talk ever!!.
I will definitely apply it in my life
I'd title this video as 'hard pills to swallow' lool. Really inspirational
I am learning that success is learning myself better , my other half know that we will need therapy to continue doing what we do.
superb video
love this.
lets go boys
This couldn’t be further from right
I watched the video!
nooo i wanted to sub to THAT man bro
Good talk.
But HOW can we motivate more EFFORT in school?
One way may be to HELP other students to learn. TEACH to LEARN, more?
Thanks so much and good luck with your work.... H Rochester NY
===========================================================
Thank you sooo much : )
He came to our school
Though I loved the talk, I have to disagree. Effort comes with a change in midset. How you see things determines how you approach it. Effort comes when you see obstacles as opportunities and the more you see yourself succeeding, the more effort you will put in.
Thank you :)
Who had to watch this in AVID????
This is great! I'd like to use it for my online community college class. We must follow the ADA laws for accessibility. The auto-generated captions are not sufficient. Would you please edit/correct the captions and ensure proper capitalization and punctuation so I can show this to my students?
Thank u :D
how to find your passion if you are not interested in any thing ????????
vivek malpani you journey back to your childhood ,capture your dreams and bring them back with you today....
McAllen Jules okay. but can you explain this in more detail .
vivek malpani when you are not interested in things you have already done in your life ---> try new things ! 😄
Thanks!
Thank you, words i exactly needed!
Superb

This is determinism. If anyone ever asks you, why people are religious or believe in fate - this is why.
so true!!!!!
Great ted talk
Its is all true !.Effort and attitude it's the secret .
I agree almost with everything. But no matter how much effort you put into singing, for example,-you can't learn to have a great voice if you don't have it. Simple as that. It doesn't apply to everything.
MoonieLass voices actually can be trained (though it takes a few years). While talent is involved it isnt everything
