It can be used as a coping mechanism for trauma, depression, anxiety, etc. It's also a perfectly healthy way to cope, but people such as myself get a lot of shame from it, mostly from people that had a healthy childhood or are not struggling with mental illness. It is so beneficial in fact, that multiple therapists and psychologists recommend it if you are looking for better ways to cope.

He isn't hurting anyone and he has something he needs either healed or comforted. It can be used as a coping mechanism for trauma, depression, anxiety, etc. It's also a perfectly healthy way to cope, but people such as myself get a lot of shame from it, mostly from people that had a healthy childhood or are not struggling with mental illness. It is so beneficial in fact, that multiple therapists and psychologists recommend it if you are looking for better ways to cope.
