My son moved home for a while & he would be a hoarder if I was tolerant. I am not. His stuff started creeping out of his room & into the hallway. My response "what's this nonsense? If it's broken or you're not gonna use it, get rid of it!". You have to nip it in the bud or they will take over your space & make it unliveable. Being tolerant makes you an enabler & a prisoner to someone else's nonsense.

My Puerto Rican wife would freak out if she saw a house in that state! My wife has high standards in cleanliness and organizing and we’ve never lived close to this. That said, I can understand how depression can allow things to get this way and as the person watches their home become more worse, it makes the depression worse as well.

Serious question. Why is it that the cleaning teams in these videos have a strict time frame in which to clean the house? In other words, why not do the job until it’s done, instead of saying they only have 24hours etc?

I've been living alone for 8 yeats, since I moved out from my parents, and I never have guests. Even if I tend to be messy, I clean regulary my place.
So, living alone is not the problem. FEELING ALONE, on the other hans, can mess you up.

I've also been struggling with depression and suicide since I've lost my wife, daughter, cat and job, as a result I've also neglected my life, but I don't see how people can let it slip so far, I have similar issues where sometimes I don't take out a trashbag out for a few days or let the dry laundry hang for 2 more weeks or only clean the bed once in 3 months, but dedicating a room to full trashbags? Sleeping right next to hundreds of cigarette buds and literal rotting meals? Letting your toilet end up looking worse than a public toilet?
So while I understand where they are coming from and the issues it causes, it always stuns me how far people can let it go.
This is going to sound cruel, but I truly think some of these people are beyond saving, sure they do appreciate the help they're getting massively, but they're just going to relapse again.
In that regard I'm happy that there's social services and people like these to help them out, hope that this is the push they needed to get their life back on track.

One thing newly single apartment dwellers forget is that cleaning and tidying has to be done daily. If a single dweller would just remove all the trash daily and do the dishes daily, there would be much less to do. Wash and put clothes away. No cans or bottles left out. If dine in a daily basis, it would be,easier and quicker to cleanup.
