    I showed this video to 3 students who have been having a horrible time finding anything approximating an /r/. Then we talked about it and tried your technique. I am happy to report that all three were successful. Nice to have for my bag o' /r/ tricks. Thanks!

    My son had this. Its easy to take for granted the ability to say the 'r' sound. Trying to explain something that comes naturally to most people is hard. This was a great video. I could tell the difference at the end

    Wonderful method....I am homeschooling my 5 yr old son and he is struggling to grow out of his "baby r's". I had noticed that his tongue is very narrow and you are actually the first professional I have heard bring that issue up....thanks for the validation! - thanks to you I think we are going to find our dark r's!

  • @TheBadTrad

    Our 9 year old twins cannot pronounce "r's" and it is a source of real frustration for them. We are not having much luck in finding a good speech therapist that is on our insurance plan, but this video gives us hope that the speech problem can be fixed. Thanks for posting.

    Good luck and keep at it! I've worked with a lot of seventh graders who corrected the sound......they just didn't have good instruction in elementary school. I'm glad you have found someone who can help you.

    Thank you for sharing this Pepper. I tried "Car-la" with a student today and it seems promising. We plan to give it another try later this week. Can you talk a little bit about how you shape this into an "er"? Where to go from "here" in other words. Thank you!

  • @kaylu12
    @kaylu12 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @hellachillyo There really are different ways to make the ER sound. When I was working as a speech therapist I found that some kids could make this sound one particular way but not another. I'd try having a child try a different way if he/she was unable to do it using one method after practicing it. Everyone is different. : )

  • @kaylu12
    @kaylu12 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video! I used to do this all day, too ; ) Sometimes I would tell a child to put the sides of their tongue on the upper back teeth and then slide it back as if it was on tracks like a garage door. I enjoyed your video.

    aw. look at the smile on her little face at the end. so proud of herself, as she should be. 😊
    Speech can be brutal when you're a kid. so god bless the therapists who dedicate their lives to this. I was in Speech when i was little because I had (and still sort of have) a terrible lisp (think the way Drew Barrymore talks and moves her mouth) and I was so insecure about it.
    ...who's the cruel mother effer that decided to put the letter 'S' in the word lisp anyway?? what a turd. 😆

      Funny...and even crueler is that all of my kids seemed to have the error sound in their names. And mine...Mrs. Richardson! I always said, if you can say my name correctly, you don't need speech therapy!

    Hi. I want to know what I can do with to help me pronounce the r. I am 18 years old and throughout my life I never learned how to pronounce the letter r. I sometimes feel bad because I use to get bullied because I didn't know how to pronounce it. If there is any way you can help, it would be lovely! Thank you & have a blessing day.

    • @PepperRichardson
      @PepperRichardson  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Yuliana, You really need to seek the help of a professional in your area. If you live near a university, I would suggest you call and find out if they offer speech therapy as a major, and, if so, you may be able to get help there. There are speech pathologists all over the country (assuming you live in the US) that would be able to help.

    • @yulianacortes7214
      @yulianacortes7214 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahhh okay I see. In fact I do live in the U.S. I will be looking around my area & see if they have any speech therapy. Thank you for your help.

      ***** Don't be disheartened, Yulliana! You seem like such a sweet girl. You are definitely not the only young adult that has difficulty with /r/! (I'm a speech therapist also). You probably have a long practiced habit of saying r a different way. The good news is your age will be a benefit to you, because you're bright enough now to help yourself apply what you're taught more easily than it would be for a child. To get some sense of the right placement, maybe use words that go from an L to an R (ex.- Sailor) or are gr or cr words like green, cream, etc., since the g and k sounds are in the back of your mouth. Colleges that have a speech pathology major oftentimes have a clinic where the speech therapy students treat disorders for free because they're not professionals yet. So you could get helped by someone your age, who would be supervised by someone older. No matter what keep your head up. People will always find something to bully others about if that's the kind of people they are. Doesn't mean you aren't a great girl! They don't get the final say. Work hard and don't give up- and smile!

      @yulianacortes7214 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jp Gressman Thank you so much ! You got no clue how much that made me smile. I will start practicing with some words similar to the ones above. I am in research of colleges who have speech therapy. Thanks for your help ! I appreciate it very much! I sure will smile (:

  • @PepperRichardson
    @PepperRichardson  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @apoc601
    Yes, each vowel is produced with different tongue positioning. The easiest way to see the differentiation is to watch yourself in a mirror as you produce, for instance "ee" (long e) and 'ae" (short a). You can feel where your tongue is in your mouth for each one.

    Hi....unfortunately, speech therapists come from varied backgrounds and there is no "set" way to teach any sound. Don't be sorry; I totally relate to what you are saying ;six different SLPs may have six different ways that they teach the sound. In the meantime, my best advice to you is to not do ANYTHING else (words, sentences) until you have stabilized the "er" with 100% accuracy. Have your speech therapist contact me if she needs a little help with it!

    hi...this technique was a huge help getting middle aged students to produce any kind of r whatsoever...thnx. Can you suggest a general format for getting it to generalize to other phonemic contexts? I have one student that can produce kr w/ short vowels, and one that can produce r controlled vowels in phrases but must have the -la to get the r-- this latter student is the one I need tips for. Ex: she can say phrases like, "Carla isn't coming" & "I talked to Starla" & even phrases with -rly ( "Barley is good") but cannot say "car" , "star", or "bar". thanks.

    Hi Enji...I can't really help you directly. You would need to seek the help of a speech pathologist in your area to work with in person. If you are in the United States, you could seek help from a local university that offers speech pathology as a major. You might also seek help from a certified speech pathologist who specializes in accent reduction. Good luck!

      I wouldn't worry about the /r/ at such a young age. Normal age range for mastery of /r/ occurs anywhere from 3 to 6 years old.

    • @PepperRichardson
      @PepperRichardson  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with Jacob....these strategies are meant to be used with children who have been identified as having an articulation disorder. Three year olds who have not yet developed /r/ would be considered developmentally normal.

    what is the name of this speech impediment? is this a lisp,apraxia, or something else. I had a speech impediment as a kid and I still struggle today , but has improved greatly over the years (I'm in my 20's). I had the same problems as the girl in the video.
    my questions: what is the name of this speech disorder? how do you develop it? Does kids with this disorder suffer with other disorders (autism, adhd, etc)?

    • @PepperRichardson
      @PepperRichardson  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a common articulation problem that is nothing more than a substitution of one sound for another..in this case, it is a w/r ( at least in the initial position of words.) It is not necessarily associated with autism or any other developmental delay. Normally developing children can often 'mislearn' sounds due to ear infections, poor speech models, etc. I'm glad your speech has improved; some people require additional help to correct speech erros while others don't.

    I'm sorry, but it just frustrates me that speech therapists seem to have like, ten different ways for you to say /r/'s. My speech therapist told me to position my tongue a different way, but that made almost an L sound, and I watched a couple other videos that tell you to do it other ways. Isn't there a handbook or something they can all follow to make it less confusing?

    • @imsita

    • @kalliemedenwald9770
      @kalliemedenwald9770 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are two different ways to form the /r/ sound (retroflexed vs. bunched) and it works differently for different people. What you are describing sounds more similar to the retroflexed where the tongue tip curls to the back of your mouth. Beyond just the "ruh" sound typically thought of the "r" sound there is also 6 different vocalic /r/ sounds that change depending on what vowel they are placed with! Once you break it down, it is truly amazing all that children can learn through observation and exploration of language by figuring out how to pronounce difference sounds at all! I understand the confusion and frustration! I hope you have made progress and had some success across the years!
