Real Russian Club Suppose that some people, like myself, have an actual tongue-tie , thus unable to do that excersise? Is rolling the R's just something I should give up on?
Ok, I'm 22 years old, my native language has rolling Rs, I've never been able to do more than a bit of a roll as a part of the 'tr' or 'dr' sound. Using a finger for this exercise was kinda awkward, so I grabbed a Q-tip, did it for a bit with a Q-tip and then without it and OH MY GOD. It's still pretty sloppy, but I'm actually able to (kinda) roll it after doing this once! Hopefully if I practice it regularly I can perfect it, thank you so much!
Did you know? There are people in Russia who can't say that. They are called "Картавые", They say R like a german's R, but it's so cool and funny. Я и сам картавый, если что)))
wow the Q tip actually worked for me, i was pushing it like how u described, and i was like ouch thats painful, a minute later, i am trilling!!!! thank you i have been trying to trill the R for years !!!
This totally works! I spent 30 years not being able to do the "rr." I speak Spanish very well and wanted to be able to speak it correctly. I watched so many videos, read tips, instructions, etc. and nothing helped. I found this video and ended up buying the full course. After a month of doing the exercises and stretches, I woke up one morning and could do it! It's been a year and a half now :)
@@mickfleming9627 What do I mean by what? I did the exercises and stretches multiple times a day from the 15 dollar course that she has online, and after a month I could roll my r's.
I did the tongue stretching exercises and I just rolled the perfect r just after I did it, but it literally worked once and now I can't do it again! ☹️ Update: Keep practicing and keep doing the tongue-stretching exercise every day! Keep saying "Prince of Prussia" a few times, keeps adding a letter "D" after the "P's" (so you say "Pdrince Of Pdruussia" - this helps you identify where your tongue needs to be. Everytime you get the chance to practice try and Roll the R instead of just saying "r" in words (like if you're reading something to yourself, whenever there's an R-word use it as a chance to practice), listen to Russian people talk and try to pronounce things like they do (sounds daft but honestly that's helping me so much), learn Russian too (interestingly, I actually roll my R's better when I speak Russian somehow), try and add a silent "D" in words when you're gonna roll yours R's (example, say "D-Russia", the tongue will be in the right place and it helps when you pronounce the R) and above all, keep practicing. Honestly, I can pretty much do it now, but it doesn't quite sound as strong or pronounced as I want it to yet, but the fact I can even trill the R'S with my tongue instead of it coming from my throat like a French R is in itself progress for me, because before I had absolutely no chance! Those are all little tips that are helping me, so thought I'd share incase they help others too. Thank you so much for uploading this! You've helped me immeasurably, and I'm thankful to all Russian people in the videos I've seen of them trilling R's because listening to them has helped me (The Russian way seems to work best for me). 😎

I don't know how I ended up here. But as a native speaker of a language that uses heavily rolled Rs, I'll add this. Rolling R sound takes more air than other sounds. The air makes the tongue move, not the muscles. The tongue itself should be quite relaxed so the air can make it move. Using more air may help you make the sound at first; then, you can figure out how to control it better with less air once you get the feel for it.

Genius! Never been able to roll my Rs in my life, and just 5 mins into your video I've been able to do short phrases... can't wait to see where practicing gets me
I finally learned to roll my r's after years of thinking it was impossible. Here's my tips to anyone reading: Lay down on your side/back on a bed and do what everyone says (place tongue on ridge and blow air). While doing this, move your tongue in a variety of ways, front, middle, and back. Really try to see if any position makes the tongue vibrate even the tiniest bit. If you find a spot where it does, try to direct your focus around that spot. It should be right behind your teeth like everyone says, but that's not necessarily true. Continue trying different placements and stiffnesses of your tongue, you should notice that some positions work better than others. If you feel like you're close, try blowing a LOT of air, it makes the roll come out easier. Progress like this. Rolling your r's isn't a skill you magically unlock. For me it took about 2 weeks of steady progress to get a good rolled r.
The way I tell people to do it is to say "better day." Then change that to "vetter day." Say that repeatedly to get the basic feeling of saying green in Spanish, which is verde. I'm not saying this is the only method, but I think it can supplement the other techniques.
@@samb3l0375 don't worry about your tongue. Just say vetter day about a million times with increasing speed and slight variations; and it should eventually work.
Thank you for this. I will practice with these methods. It was embarrassing for me to try to fake it when saying a simple "hello" Zdrastivuite. when I lived in Russia. (failing most of the time)
I’ve been dealing with this problem since i was a kid, now i’m 23, even that i’m not from english spoken country, and i’ve been bullied a lot that i can’t even pronounce rolling R correctly. Well i might be trying this method then
I can roll my tongue for trilling when doing the exercise just fine, it’s when trying to use it in a word where my throat wants to make the trill sound instead of my tongue.
Omg! by within the first few minutes of watching your video I was able to roll my r's, something I've been always fascinated by, but was not at all able to do! Thank you ever so much ☺❤❤
I learned it when I was a kid-inadvertently. I found I could roll it when imitating a dog's bark. In hindsight, I concluded that it was the fact that I did not focus on my tongue but rather the strong gush of air coming out that I was successful. Many people make the mistake of giving too much thought to the tongue, which creates tension and the false impression that it takes a lot of effort to do it. In fact, it isn't.
I'm a spanish native speaker and i have never been able to roll r. You can imagine how hard it has been for me to grow up like this. I just gave up and move to France, no need for that stupid r sound here
i am learning both russian and spanish and honestly couldn't figure out how to roll an R at the front of my mouth (i can roll it towards the back of my throat though) so this is very helpful :) although i do feel very strange sticking a q tip into my mouth hahaha спасибо! :D
I watched a video where a speech coach basically said the relaxed tongue thing is bs, and said it takes muscle and practice to keep your tongue in that position. You know that clicking sound with your tongue you can make? She said doing the repeatedly can activate your tongue muscle so its easier.

These are the best videos I found on youtube so it's well worth supporting you. Omg I'm so happy, thank you. Now I only need to learn how to use it while speaking and make it seem natural and then I'm good to go
I am starting feeling the tip of my tongue vibrating, for the first time. With the Q-tip. It helps to understand how to pronounce the sound. Thank you.
I’m 18 years old and i’ve NEVER been able to do some simple things like rolling my rs and snapping my fingers. I’ve always wanted to be able to do it, and now i’m finally on my own for a few days so I can try to practice without anyone judging me. lol
Add/replace the r with a d. R'd. Fast-take out the middle 'sound'. Use it in your native language and you will get the hang of it. After speaking words in the other language enough(depends on your tongue) you will naturally relax that Anglo tongue!
Here is my question - I seem to often end up with a "th" sound in front of my rolled r, especially after a vowel. I can feel my tongue going to the wrong place, but it feels like that is the only way I can get the rolled r sound out For instace, if I try to say "ara" it comes out more like "athra"
@@mohanbabu908 with q tips it works immediately, but without, you still have to practice. But I found tips from other video that actually it's not the way you move the tongue that produce the roll r, but the air that flow through the funnel create by positioning your tongue. I hope it makes sense. It works for me, but still, have to practice very often to train the muscle.
I have rolled R's but it was done using the palatine uvula, or at least that it feels where the sound is coming from. Thanks for video, Hopfuly I can start breaking that bad habit and start rolling my R the right.

I truly hope this helps me. I sound like a complete idiot practicing this in the middle of the forest alone… I have been studying Russian for about 2 months now and have a good grasp on the language itself but I still can’t roll a r. Wish you all luck!
Wow, after like 20 years of trying to do this in my studying of Spanish, I did it for the first time by relaxing my tongue and holding my throat! Then I did the Q-tip thing and figured out my tongue only rolls when it's directly behind my top teeth, which is kind of the opposite of the instructions. I'm glad Daria mentioned that we need to move the tongue around while doing the Q-tip exercise, otherwise I never would've figured it out. Amazing! I was just about to purchase her R rolling course!
I've been trying for around the same length of time. I've tried tips from Spanish, Russian, Arabic, and Japanese, but nothing worked. This comment actually got me to do it for the first time! The video, nor any of the tips in the video worked, and even after figuring it out, the Q-tip thing still doesn't do anything
I tried so hard to roll the r for years, and I just can't produce the sound, Even with q-tips... It's really frustrating and I fehl kinda dumb for not being able to do something so simple..
Is not so simple, don't worry! Do not forget to put your tongue on the upper palate behind the teeth, and never try to make the rr inspiring! It is always expiring and blowing out the air by making the tongue breathe. I speak Spanish and the rr is always everywhere. Watch videos that teach how to say the Spanish rr, those will help you to speak the russian rr.
Amazing! I learn to use the Q-tip from my boyfriend and then I searched this video for a deeper look. It works! Now I can say R, but with the D sound. Will move to your next video for more practice. Thanks for sharing!
I feel so frustrated. ive been speaking russian my entire life. before i learned english i only spoke languages that only do rolled rs. my entire life ive never been able to roll even a single r. at this point im sure my tongue is just unable to produce such sound.

1916: "How to groom toes with frog slime."
I finally learned to roll my r's after years of thinking it was impossible. Here's my tips to anyone reading:
Lay down on your side/back on a bed and do what everyone says (place tongue on ridge and blow air).
And how do i have to put my tongue?
@@samb3l0375 don't worry about your tongue. Just say vetter day about a million times with increasing speed and slight variations; and it should eventually work.
@@ucenic1 OK, because i tried a lot of other things and it never worked🥺
wow that started working *but i kept running out of breath rip*
So if i can routinely work with my Spanish Ds and Rs and Ts, I am making the correct sounds?
Thank you for this. I will practice with these methods. It was embarrassing for me to try to fake it when saying a simple "hello" Zdrastivuite. when I lived in Russia. (failing most of the time)
After using your methods and praticing for 3 days, I finally DID it! Love you so much!!!
really? just use a Q-tip to hold your tone ?
Well done!! I’m still trying haha
😱
i give up, i will forever sound like a foreigner despite being born here
I relate to this comment too much.
She had me looking like an idiot with a Q-tip in my mouth making dah noises …my sister asked what was wrong with me
Instructions were unclear i swallowed the qtip and now I speak fluent danish
XD
Lol:)
I’ve been dealing with this problem since i was a kid, now i’m 23, even that i’m not from english spoken country, and i’ve been bullied a lot that i can’t even pronounce rolling R correctly. Well i might be trying this method then
as a russian thank you so much I couldn't roll my tongue for ages until you came along (I'm 50% russian and my grandmother is from cork)
I looked like I was having a seizure when doing this😂😂😂😂😂
I can roll my tongue for trilling when doing the exercise just fine, it’s when trying to use it in a word where my throat wants to make the trill sound instead of my tongue.
ahh this is my problem as well
Same here, how is your progress?
@@LocalhostTutorials after hours every day at work practicing, I finally got it!
@@Kyungneh wow thats great! congrats and hope i can do the same :)
I'm so glad I'm not the only one...
I am on the verge of tears in frustration. I've been trying to roll my r's for unironically 2 years and have never came close
Same here but 6 years
@@Musava Hang in there, brother. One day we’ll be able to roll our Rs like cats.

Never been able to except on accident. Want to learn Kazakh and Russian but this R rolling has been a stumbling block
Omg! by within the first few minutes of watching your video I was able to roll my r's, something I've been always fascinated by, but was not at all able to do! Thank you ever so much ☺❤❤
I'm just learning so I can okurrr like cardi b lmao
Jayanna Avayah LITERALLY SAME RN
MEEEE TOOO
I saw a video of her explaining her phrases and had to learn
That's literally y I'm here
The only reason im trying all of this 😂
That single first exercise has helped my rolling so much better. Thanks so much.
Came for the R's and fell in love with the accent.
Came for the rain and then … came for the Rs ?
I learned it when I was a kid-inadvertently. I found I could roll it when imitating a dog's bark. In hindsight, I concluded that it was the fact that I did not focus on my tongue but rather the strong gush of air coming out that I was successful. Many people make the mistake of giving too much thought to the tongue, which creates tension and the false impression that it takes a lot of effort to do it. In fact, it isn't.
Jeffrey Fugh This was really helpful, thanks.
There’s an EASY explanation on TH-cam channel called Ten Minute Spanish. It is from 4 months ago and called How to Roll Your [r]’s.
I'm a spanish native speaker and i have never been able to roll r. You can imagine how hard it has been for me to grow up like this. I just gave up and move to France, no need for that stupid r sound here
lol that's a good solution.
U do need the rolled r in French as well😂
@@paigeskinner5748 no lol, we don't have that sound in French
@@LoXena although it’s not the exact same as Spanish there are rolled rs in French (I speak it)
@@paigeskinner5748 no
i am learning both russian and spanish and honestly couldn't figure out how to roll an R at the front of my mouth (i can roll it towards the back of my throat though) so this is very helpful :) although i do feel very strange sticking a q tip into my mouth hahaha
спасибо! :D
She:rrrrrrrrrrrrr
Me:left the group
i hate that whenever i create the sound i am overly excited and focus so hard i cant produce it again ugghhh getting a little bit frustrated
How do you relaxe and stretch your toungue but also put it up and curl it back at the same time? This is contradicting itself isnt it?
I watched a video where a speech coach basically said the relaxed tongue thing is bs, and said it takes muscle and practice to keep your tongue in that position. You know that clicking sound with your tongue you can make? She said doing the repeatedly can activate your tongue muscle so its easier.

Thank you SOOOO much! This was the first video that really helped me. I’ve been trying to roll my Rs for 30 years and I’m now just being able to say words correctly for the first time ever.
I am thinking positive that I will accomplish this! Thanks for sharing.
I exercised for 2 mounths now and I start to get it. I can make a simmilar sound but I can't keep it flowing. I will practice more and get it! Good luck :D
OMG I can finally do it!!!! I've been trying to trill the R for so long and I thought that I might not be able to do it but now I can yaaay. I've been doing these exercises for a week or two now and it got better every day. I actually even bought your course and I didn't actually end up needing it. Was worth it nevertheless. These are the best videos I found on youtube so it's well worth supporting you. Omg I'm so happy, thank you. Now I only need to learn how to use it while speaking and make it seem natural and then I'm good to go
thank you so much :))
Every time I think I'm even close I hear you make the actual sound and realize just how far away I am from mastering it
grazie !! thank you so much I'm trying to learn Italian and I can roll my R's with most words buy not some .this helped alot thank you again.
Might be easier to learn Quantum Physics
ON GOD
Can confirm
Amen.
I am starting feeling the tip of my tongue vibrating, for the first time. With the Q-tip. It helps to understand how to pronounce the sound. Thank you.
My mom walked in and she thought I was deep throating my finger
OMG TYSM I WAS TRYING FOR TWO HOURS AND WITH YOUR SEVEN MINUTES I MASTERED IT!!!
Bro How when I try I just purr
should I clean my ears with the Qtip first for a better taste?
Yes, definitely.
😂 😂 😂
take your grandma used Qtip for a aged taste works like wine.
No. Roll your Rs, not your EARS hahaha

What a relief when u already speak Russian fluency

I’ve always wanted to be able to do it, and now i’m finally on my own for a few days so I can try to practice without anyone judging me. lol
I know I can't roll my r's
Add/replace the r with a d. R'd. Fast-take out the middle 'sound'. Use it in your native language and you will get the hang of it. After speaking words in the other language enough(depends on your tongue) you will naturally relax that Anglo tongue!
For real ? Every Israeli that I know knows to roll the R... And our R is special
@@Item1948 hey bro 🇮🇳❤🇮🇱
the long dddd is hard work... after she combs her hair with the q-tip, love this video, thanks for the info
i can vibrate my tongue no problem but it sounds like an H and not an R. I've never understood how you can make it sound like an R
Сестра and здравствуйте are so hard for me, but other words are easy, but practice makes better lol
@@augustguerra2550 And then you figure out that you don’t pronounce the first в. 🤣
omg thank you so much! I'm from China and it works!!! so happy
Here is my question - I seem to often end up with a "th" sound in front of my rolled r, especially after a vowel. I can feel my tongue going to the wrong place, but it feels like that is the only way I can get the rolled r sound out For instace, if I try to say "ara" it comes out more like "athra"
same
Same
Than you so much! I am polish, and I could never get the rolling r sound right. This really helped
The q tip method does work! For me it's by vibrating it horizontally, instead of up and down
How many days did it took ?
@@mohanbabu908 with q tips it works immediately, but without, you still have to practice. But I found tips from other video that actually it's not the way you move the tongue that produce the roll r, but the air that flow through the funnel create by positioning your tongue. I hope it makes sense. It works for me, but still, have to practice very often to train the muscle.
@@cumacemi Thank you I am practicing
@@cumacemi could you pls give me the link of the name of the video?
I have rolled R's but it was done using the palatine uvula, or at least that it feels where the sound is coming from. Thanks for video, Hopfuly I can start breaking that bad habit and start rolling my R the right.
I look like such an idiot right now while trying this hahaha
So frustrating. Thank you for your video. I’m still working on it for so long! I have been consistent this week and I will not give up.
I'm trying to practice how to roll "R" 'cause dude I'm going to college this year and still can't pronounce "R", and taking the opportunity to learn it in quarantine but no improvement at all🤦
are u tongue tied?
@@electraheart5278 thats mean person
@@goos101 no i asked an actual question when u are tongue tied u might not be able to say the letter "r"
@@goos101 it’s an actual thing! People who are tongue tied sometime can’t pronounce their “r”s. It’s something they should see a doctor or specialist for.
Thank you! I'm feeling a call to go spend time in Russia in a few years time and want to start learning the language to the best of my ability now. I love your videos! Also I'm trying not to laugh at myself because it sounds so funny to me the sounds that are coming out of my mouth.
haha welcome to the Russian language :D
As an English speaker, rolling the rs is the hardest for me. I'm getting better tho I practice by saying привет и город lol
It's ridiculously hard even for me, a native speaker of a language that does have this sound (which sadly I cannot pronounce)
can u abbreviate how u pronounce that pls 😭
I truly hope this helps me. I sound like a complete idiot practicing this in the middle of the forest alone… I have been studying Russian for about 2 months now and have a good grasp on the language itself but I still can’t roll a r.
Wish you all luck!
I finally learned it after 20 years of trying
@@meowmiaumiauw That's awesome!! Hope it sticks!!
I tried so hard to roll the r for years, and I just can't produce the sound, Even with q-tips...
It's really frustrating and I fehl kinda dumb for not being able to do something so simple..
Me either bro dont worry
It just takes practice, if her tongue can do it, yours can too
