I spent a couple of days at at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, and I have never felt so much love and acceptance in my travels. The temple includes a kitchen where everyone is fed for free and everyone, rich, poor, men and women prepare a free delicious food. The temple also includes free rooms to stay. God Bless the Sikhs, as they bless us.

In 1971 I was living in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. There, I met one Hindu guy from New Delhi. Through him I met many Muslims and Sikhs. I was also introduced to their wonderful and varied foods!
At that time I used to drive to Toronto to watch Indian movies in a crowded auditorium full of many different East Indian cultures. I rather enjoyed being the only foreigner among them.
Having had that experience early on in my life, I was able to live comfortably among Palestinian Muslims in the West Bank for more than 2 years. For the last 8 years I've lived in the town of Taroudant in southern Morocco. I know I am absolutely safe living among Muslims.
Personal experience is so important to intercultural understanding.

      @Real life Terminator: I'm sure you're correct.
When, on reaching retirement age and preparing to move from Canada to Morocco, one of my siblings was only vaguely aware that it was somewhere on the African continent. Fortunately for me, the move has proven to be a great success.

TheDavidDaoud it helps, but I think the big thing is a willingness to educate and challenge one's self with things like this.
sadly, many of us just watch nothing but fiction as an escape, while avoiding politics and empathetic pieces like this in efforts to avoid "depression..." and most of them don't even know what true depression is.

I live one city block away from the temple in oak Creek. I woke that day to what I thought was a helicopter landing on my house. It was the feds landing across the street. I was horrified to hear what was going on. These are my neighbors and they are wonderful Americans. In the summer I see the Sikh fellas cruising Howell Ave on their Harley's just like the rest of us. I love my Sikh neighbors and always remember them in my prayers. Thank you Abby for doing this story. And helping our community heal.

Hitchhiking in the mountain regions of northern India, I would go to a cheap Sikh Dhabba or food stand and wait until a Sikh truck driver came to eat. he would always give me a lift, no hassle, no danger, I might buy him a beer. We were immediately friends.

Thank you Abby for this wonderful documentary. I hold that humanity has come up with quite a number of evil things in the course of history but racism is perhaps the worst of these. With only the slightest bit of thinking is it not obvious that all life is "sacred" ("sacred" here has meaning even for an atheist like me) and that, of course, includes all humans without exception. An I would like to add - we are all equal and we all live on this one planet which we have on lease from our greatgreatgrandchildren. Why is this so difficult to understand for some people?

CJin PA They wear turbans because they dont cut their hair on their head or anywhere on the body because sikhs believe you should live naturally. Sikhs wear turbans to tie up their long hair. In a sikh temple you take off your shoes and cover your head because to them thats respectful to god and their gurus. Sikh women can wear turban too, but most prefer to keep their hair uncovered and wear a cloth over their heads when going to the temple. Sikh men with cut hair wear a bandana like thing. The turban is to tie up their long uncut hair and to act a symbol of sikhs

      🌺CJin PA 🌺
      Follow Basics of Sikhi
      For all questions..... respect
🙏In short and from wht I know being a Sikh , our 10th Guru was 9 years old when his father(Teg bBahdur,9th Guru) was beheaded by extremists or Muslims in 1600s just bcz they wanted him to convert to Islam , they actually wanted the Kashmir Hindus to become Muslims upon which Hindus came to our 9th guru because he was the only one following Sikh teachings instead of Islam
So , he stood up and said if anyone can convert me , then u can convert any person or religion to urs .
So he gave his life for another religion.
The person who brought the Head of Our Guru back to his hometown and when his 9 years old son saw this , he asked the guy if anyone had recognized him amongst all as he was bringing the Head back and could have been killed anytime .He answered no
Then the 9 years old 10th Guru said that he will give them such an identity so that they can stand out and help and fight for justice .🙏

I believe our president could make a major contribution to our culture if he brought together all of the religious people as well as the atheists in this country and perhaps from around the world to undress their religious traditions and religious dogma and celebrate their love for humankind, their love for their families, their love for their children, their hopes for a healthy world and an appreciation of the setting where this takes place as well as their aspirations for their children in our society. We need to get far beyond religious dogma, bigotry, ethnocentrism and magical thinking by reconnecting with each other and with our garden, namely this world and our place in it. Humans cannot survive if we do not cooperate, work together, collaborate and coordinate based on our skills and our knowledge rather than on ancient prejudices.

I have travelled to India several times with a wife and family in India. But Abby Martin is just spouting the liberal line. Why do liberals speak for immigrants without asking immigrants themselves?? Many Asians are very successful here and have many places of business..... so why doesn't Abby Martin ask these many business owners who they fear most in America when they go to work every day? Do they send their kids to majority black schools??? No of course not. Do they put bars on their shops, cameras, bullet proof glass at their shops because they are afraid of white people? No. Why not look at stats instead of promote anti-white racism? If white do the most attacks against foreigners then it's racism, if most attacks are done by black people then that is also racism.

What isn't being asked: what conditions in their country triggered this steady stream of out-migration ?
When Americans failed to challenge the distorted lies of 9-11 and the non-existent role of Iraq , they passively accepted the brutal invasion and destruction of that country . This set off a wave of hate speech incessantly repeating the same Bin Laden lies that were already prepared minutes after the first bombs detonated at the WTC. In this tense atmosphere, why would any foreigner want to come here to present themselves as a target?
This is such a superficial hatchet job that is typical of Martin's low budget videos. I can barely make out what her zombie voice is saying. She should ask why the U.S. continues cooperating with the UN refugee resettlement programs that has brought over 3 million to our soil. She never does follow up with the race baiting theme of this particular doc.

And I am not big believer in conspiracy theories. I do strongly feel repulsed by 1984 anti-Sikh riots carried by Congress thugs against innocent Sikhs. While it was wrong for Indira Gandhi to carry out operation Blue Star considering Sacred nature of Harmandir Sahib and civilian casualties, it was equally wrong for Bhinderwala to amass weapons and militia inside such a important sacred place. It is sort of wonder to me why no Sikh criticise Bhinderwala actions.

In Punjabi it is actually pronounced Sikh and not Seekh ( you can go check Wikipedia if you like) ... I do understand how there's conflict with that in English because Sikh (means student, disciple, or Seeker of truth) and Sick in English means obviously something else.. so I do understand the distortion but don't let stuff like that get you off the message of someone going out there and trying her best.
