In the new movie, Maverick is in the same role as Charlotte Blackwood was in the original (except he doesn't wear fishnet stockings and heels, or at least they don't show that).
Also, Dood!! You missed the best call-back of all. The admiral's daughter mentioned twice in the original TG, Penny Benjamin, who Maverick got in trouble for "going ballistic" with, was the love interest in the 2022 film, played by the gorgeous Jennifer Connelly!!
Not necessarily a callback, but more of an easter egg was when she is first introduced on screen. The song playing in the background was David Bowie's "Let's Dance". Connelly and Bowie were the leads in "Labyrinth" which opened about a month after Top Gun in 1986.
This movie is a freaking unicorn. A sequel nobody asked for to a not-so-great movie from 35+ years ago in an era where most blockbuster films are either sequels, prequels or remakes... and it manages to be one of the best movies I've ever seen. The tower buzz was the cherry on top for me.
I have to disagree about the original being a "Not-so-great movie." Not only was it a iconic movie of an era, it created it's own genre of movies and TV shows that lasted into the 2000's. The sequel wouldn't be as successful and emotional for so many people if the original movie hadn't withstood the test of time.
5:00 that’s not true. In the trailers the flags of Taiwan and Japan were altered to appease the Chinese market, but in the actual released movie, the flags are their normal, unaltered selves.
