For years all I had was a Buck 119 and 110 for all camping and hunting needs. You are correct about phenolic being used to make bowling balls (and billiard balls), so you know how tough that stuff is. Thanks for showing the different kinds of 119's. Some appear longer than others. I will never get rid of mine and I still use it a lot even though I have some "super steel" knives in my collection now. It is so easy to sharpen.
If you're going to carry a Buck 119 for survival I'd recommend a backup knife for other tasks. A Buck 119 was made for skinning, processing meat, and filleting. The tip of the 119 I've heard will break off easily when trying to baton wood with it. I'd recommend the $10 Gordon survival knife from Harbor freight. It can do everything the Buck can't. It can baton, chop trees, delimb trees, and can be made into a spear for hunting. The best part about it is it's durability. There are videos putting this $10 knife through the ringer and it hasn't broken. Good tool I would recommend it for a backup.
My first knife was a Buck 119 which I purchased from the military base I was stationed at and ended up giving it to get another one, but they had sold all of them and only had the 120 knife which I bought and still have it after so many years. About two years ago I purchased another 119 from the company store and with my name engraved on the blade so I would not give it away. The new one is in my collection of knives which I will keep for the rest of my life.
Remember to take everything in moderation. Then addiction wouldn't be a problem. Now if you'll excuse me, moderation can go suck it because I'm gonna go buy another Buck knife.

Just about everyone who owns a Buck 119 loves it, from what I have read in forums, etc. It is IMO one of the best "value for the money" knives ever made. Buck says they sharpen the 119 at 15 degrees per side, hence the wickedly sharpness you get, without rolling or chipping. The Cocobolo is so pretty I probably wouldn't use it. LOL A very nice leather sheath as well.

Buck 119 is a great all around knife, I modded mine by adding black electric tape to the phenolic handle and bought a after market leather sheath. The electric tape gives it more grip and is warm in the hand. This is my go to survival/Bugout knife and every day knife along with the buck 110.
Instead of electrical tape, try hockey or tennis racket grip tape, I think you will like that better. I used a piece of shrink fit tubing used to cover the handles of fishing poles that have Cork handles. A really good grip, even when wet.

I know I'm late to this video. The fact is, you do not need that plastic liner, but if you want a tighter fit. Remove the liver and get some thin pliable leather, use the plastic insert as a patern, then cut out the new "Liner" out of the leather. Dye it black, water proof it with some snow seal. Then when the new Leather Liner is dry fold it in half, then slide it into the sheath. Then, carefully using the knife. Use the blade to "Spread" the liner open, and there you go, no more rattle. I did that with my little Buck 102 Woodsman. Rattle is bad.
Yes, the fuller helps balance the knife. Plus with the 119's thick blade, it reduces the weight, just enough to make it comfortable to use, with out compromising the strength of the blade. I've had my 119 since 1984, and its a great knife. Mine has the three piece sheath, and not the fold over design, and no plastic liver.

That is false my friend. Fuller's are used to lighten and balance the blade and to also add strength. Much the same way an I-beam works. Because of the Fuller the blade can retain more stiffness and resist deformation.
GLB Woodsbum 256 Unless the material moved to make the fuller is on top and bottom then yes. The steel isn’t pushed to the top or bottom giving strength. The material is simply removed making it lighter and balanced but forfeit strength . Unless that metal is pushed out and reworked to make it stronger , it ain’t . Fullers on knives aren’t the same as fullers.
Not a fan of buck, blades break too easy on new ones. They are made in China now, after paying more than they're worth, you have to give buck 10.00 to replace blade w broken tip because they are brittle..kabar and cold steel are better choices..pretty to look at but don't really use a buck , it'll break

I’ll take the kabar for sure but if the 119 was the 5160 version it would be a tougher decision but I’d still go with that kabar especially since it’s not the fighting kabar which I already have but I really like the version with the but cap and different gaurd orientation likening that look over the fighter whoops it’s not a kabar but looks like the kabar version I’m talking about.
Barry Bueler there is a 5160 version.

Is the seconde one a Buck production or a personal customization?
the 119 you gave your dad looks more like a K-Bar like the marines used and made famous.
420HC or S30V?
The knives shown here are 420HC
Il est vrai ! Que certains couteaux sont véritablement incontournables 🇫🇷
Oui un couteau d exterieur est indispensable. Merci
Magnifical
Felt inside the plastic sleeve
Love 119 bravo sweet sexy looking badass buck
Those look like great knives but Gerber makes amazing knives.
Borrowed dad’s knife for review? I am struggling so hard with myself on if that knife goes home. It SHOULD, but will it? Lord help
Yes, I purchased that for a Father's Day gift some years back. Thanks for watching
No such thing as a blood groove

Yes there is. It is also called a fuller. Thanks for watching.
Sweet flea market knives
They cut!
You'd be surprised what you'd find at flea markets.
Yeah. It can be fixed . . . pull that stupid plastic sleeve OUTTA THERE!!! It's got no ultimate purpose, they issued a leather sheath with that knife.
Fullers decrease strength.

Very interesting. Thanks for the info. I will have to look into that more. Thanks for watching.
GLB Woodsbum 256 no problemo
Not a fan of buck, blades break too easy on new ones. They are made in China now, after paying more than they're worth, you have to give buck 10.00 to replace blade w broken tip because they are brittle..kabar and cold steel are better choices..pretty to look at but don't really use a buck , it'll break
The buck 119 is not made in China.
GLB Woodsbum 256 He must be buying fake 119’s on eBay 😏
@@ReichenbachEsq no I've broken several blades from Wal Mart buck knives, I broke tip on prince, half inch or more on 110, carving in oak..then they charge me 10.00 for buying a POS blade..I'm done w buck
but it's a knife not a pry bar...
Buck 105 better
Well thats like, ya know, your opinion man.
@@glbwoodsbum2567 thanks lebowski, I keep my 119 in my car, along with my zippo, nothing beats it!
