Classic country boy deer knife. Easy to clean after processing game. When I was growing up every country boy in the south wanted a 119, a 110, and a 301 Stockman for Church and school ( _yes we carried pocketknives in school back then_ ). Add a 4 wheel drive, a 12 gauge, a 30.06, a 10/22, an aluminum bass boat with a trolling motor, an Abu Garcia Ambassadeur Baitcast Reel, and a subscription to Field and Stream or Outdoor Life and you had everything every schoolboy in the Appalachians wanted.
Grew up in southern West Virginia, buck and case were what all my boys had.buck was the top of the line for us a 110 buck was.Standard equipment for a deer hunting young man, the 105 or the 119 was kept in the gun cabinet for processing. In the town I grew up in we had one buck dealer and one case dealer.many hours looking at those displays
Got my 119 back in 1988 (with the old 425M steel) and after 35 years of hunting, the knife is still functional and working. After 35 years, the blade doesn't retain the sharpness as long as it used to, but that is to be expected and normal after that much use and wear. The best part of a 119 is the decades worth of memories you get each time you look at the knife, definitely one you buy to pass down to the next generation.
It's great that you've had the opportunity to experience how good the 119 can be and over such a long period of time. It's nice to have such a trusty companion at your side. Thanks for sharing, Sn'W.
Looking forward to using mine. I paid £80 British pounds from a licensed Buck dealer in the UK. Shipping and import tax make it more expensive. Another knife for my collection, yes i use them all except for some old and rare models.
@@NeilBates-k3t I have the name of the company who I purchase quite a lot of my knives from. There are others but all around the same price give or take a couple of ££s.
Thanks for your review on this American Classic and iconic knife. I really enjoyed you explaining about the history of the 119 as well. 👍The Buck 119 Special was the first knife of significant quality I ever really owned and was a gift from my folks back when I was 16. I still have that knife and someday it will be passed down to my children and/or grandchildren if I'm ever blessed with them. I also have the Buck 119 Pro and it's really nice. Thanks for sharing, take care and Cheers!
The 119 Special truly is special. So happy to have this in the collection being such an iconic American made knife with links to World War II and the many brave men who owned them. The 4 generations of the Buck family have continued making them to high quality standards. Thanks, Toad.
I started a Christmas Bowie tradition. The Buck 119 was this last year's Christmas Bowie. Think I'm going with the Cold Steel 1917 Frontier Bowie this Christmas.
I'm back on "the list" got my first Case!!! The next on the list is a little vague, just a traditional Anglo/American style Hunting knife. A Buck 119 is definitely in the running. One American made knife I've had for many years I really value is a Buck 679, only entry level but still a fantastic blade. The steel snobs turn their noses up at 420, Buck, Taylor's Eye Witness and Marttinni all 420. I like the steel on all three brands.
Yes way to much is made of blade steels being insufficient. Buck do a fantastic heat treat, and founder Hoyt understood that from the very beginning. People came to him for the edge he could keep on farming implements, well before he transitioned to knives. It has always been a priority within the company. Thanks, JK.
Got my Buck 119 back in the 80's. When Buck was using 425HC Stainless Steel. Plus, the sheath it has is a sandwich style sheath. So a front piece, back piece with gusset. So no drain hole. Its been a very good knife, and still is. Its not a Rat Tail. Its a over molded stick tang, that has been necked down just enough to get the guard on. A rat tail tang, looks like a rat tail. The tang on the 119, does not look like a rat's tail.
The name Buck as well known as the name Ka-Bar. At least over here. The knife sells itself, no introductions needed, everybody knows what knife you mean. That means consistent quality over decades to reach that fame and hold the good name. Pretty good for a company and a pretty good companion. Thank you John.
Great fixed blade for sure ant my a really great price. I think both this one and it’s baby brother are amazing fixed blades. Thanks for the great content as always. ❤️👍
It's a classic for good reason. 👍And I was really happy that Buck makes a left handed sheath for this one, I put mine on a dangler and it's a game changer when you're wearing a coat. Cheers, buddy!
Hey John, Fantastic review of a classic knife👍🏻 Great multi purpose blade, capable in a wide variety of applications 👍🏻 A well tested and proven design. Thanks for this one, enjoyed it 👍🏻 Stay well brother 😎👊🏻
I ordered mine from buck knives but decided to make it look like Dexter's knife off of the series Dexter I got a brown handle and brass and s30v steel^^but also if the book company was to be smart they could put pins inside the knife to keep it just in case if they don't actually have to put glue it could last much longer I wish they would think of that.
@@ThriftyKaniffy I was thinking about like the handguard where it has the black line through it, they should have made that one solid piece instead of splitting it, it just puts a lot of glue inside of a knife so much glue that we really don't need the last part is the more solid the more last longer it will be:)
I don't have a lot of fixed blades, but this is chief among them. I'm delighted to have gotten a chance to own one. There's a reason they call this the "Special". Have a great weekend, RJ.
You can’t go wrong with a Buck knife. Lifetime warranty. The 119 is a great choice as are any in the “100” series. 102 & 117 are smaller the 120 is longer and the 124 is heavier/more robust.
The 119 would be close to flawless if it were full tang with a micarta handle. I have a couple of these . Since its not full tang i would not attempt to baton a piece of wood with it . I Am a collector of Buck knives since I was a kid. my first was a buck 112 that skint several deer with. Got lost in the army. Still a loyal fan to buck knives
Thanks for sharing your history with Buck, Paul. I always enjoy hearing about the experiences my viewers have had growing up with various knives. Take care.
Why do you need micarta and full tang? If it had full tang it wouldn't be the same knife so what's the point? If you haven't noticed, there IS a version of the 119 with micarta handles and upgraded steel. It costs 3 times the price of regular 119 so not sure if it's worth it. I don't think so.
It's called a hidden tang which runs the full length of the handle and is riveted at the pommel, so better than a rat tail, but maybe not quite as a good as a full tang construction. I would assume the 117 is made the same way.
Wanna buy it so badly mostly cus im a hardcore SCREAM fan but also cus I wanna get into hunting and fishing some day cus im 15 now and my family hunts sometimes
Lovely knife. The only foreign-made knife I own together with the Benchmade Adamas, until know, in my knife collection made of Lionsteel, Extrema Ratio, MKM, Fox, Maserin, Wander Tactical, Viper and a bunch of artisanal Italian knives (well, I'm from Rome, our knives are gorgeous, why give my money to unknown foreigners?). I paid only €70 for the 119 less than a month ago, undoubtely a bargain for such an American icon.

The Buck trifecta! Sounds awesome Zippity. The good ol days for sure.
You nailed it! Those were the days.

Truly an iconic knife. That heat treat is legendary.
It absolutely is, Rick. Thanks for taking a look at this classic.

I’ve got one. It was a gift from my daughter. Didn’t know they cost this much now. Thanks for the nice video.

I just got one bc of this review. I must say, I have no previous experience with buck but it is excellent. It went to my daily back pack
It's a true classic knife. Very well made. Thanks for the feedback, David.
Wanted a Bowie but got this instead, I am happy with it. Not as big as a Bowie and easier to work with. I wear xl gloves and it fits well.
Yes the handle is very accommodating on the 119. It could be my choice for an upcoming custom shop purchase in 2024.
The Buck 119 is a beautifully designed and crafted knife I love camping I don’t own one but this would be the knife of my choice
Just a beautiful design that hearkens back to the early days of Buck knives. A true classic American knife.
THANK YOU - May you have a nice weekend my friend 🌲
