I have never owned a fixed blade buck knife. I have two lock blade folders from buck... the classic 110 and a 110 light with the green plastic handles... I purchased both when I was in my teens, now in my late 40's and both are holding up almost like new. They have preformed flawlessly and the 110 classic is on my hunting belt to this day, the 110 light is always in my camp box. Fit and finish of both knives is amazing.... Growing up in a family that always carried Scharade or Old Timers, It was a hard choice to go against all my mentors....on these two I am glad I did. I will pass them to my son when I no longer need them....
The 124 has been my fav belt blade for years , I did have a left handed sheath made from saddle leather for it . I always joke that it would be the knife I would take with me if I ever got to hunt Jurassic park .
This is my second-favorite overall knife after my 36-year old 110. My 124 is from 1988. Almost flawless, but to my tastes the handle is too chunky and heavy. I've been wanting to grind the handle down, but as it's 32 years old, I am too afraid to ruin it.

Buck Knife's are the best, forget all that Super Steel stuff that wants you to believe that you need this steel or that steel, it is all a marketing game. The 420 hc from Buck is the best all around steel you will ever need. I used a 110 Folding Hunter for over 30 years, and the blade was grinned down to half of what it was due to constant use and sharpening, but it never let me down.
The 124 is my favorite fixed-blade knife as well!... It's my go-to! I wish Buck would bring back The Nemo, but with a leather sheath for outdoor use... I like the 7.5" blade on The Nemo.
Awesome video from beginning to end! I do not as of yet own a buck 124 Frontiersman but I am looking to buy one in the future. Nothing but good reviews as a workers knife on this particular knife! Thanks again for the great video!
I’ve had 30 Buck knives. 2 more on order which will bring it back to 26 after I sold a few. As a kid all I had was traditional pocket knives, joined the CG in 1990 and got into more tacticool knives, now I’m back to more traditional knives again. The Bucks I have are all the classic series except the GCK and the CSAR-T.
I got my first buck at 8 years old and I’m 68 now my 110 is 50 years old ,112 is 39 I have many more and have gifted bucks for many years great usa made knives the 124 is I’m sorry to say is one I don’t have and would love to own one thanks Buck knives
So I got the 124 super happy with it it came perfect condition just a beautiful pce plan on trying it out on a camping trip soon thanks you motivated me
@@bushcraftdevotions5851 I'd like to see how you can keep them looking nice when being used. I have the Buck 722 Spitfire as my EDC and I love it. Was surprised just cutting plastic bags and paper scratched the blade up. I thought this was pretty hard metal. Surprised plastic bag did that.
The 124 is beautiful I like the way it carries real smooth great leather sheath I love it I even prefer it over my tops and Gerber just the overall feel guard is great and just the way it performs
I'm 3rd generation rancher in south Texas and I use knifes all the time ( 4 years ago on a wild pig) my a knife freak Lol, in the old days my father and his father used Case knives ( I still have them) but in the last 10 years iv been using bucks ( I have 20 something knifes all over the place) most of the time I have the folding 110s with fingers grooves, good video congrats.
Clean it after use, put a little olive oil on the blade for corrosion prevention, and if you use the knife for food processing as well. Buck knives are great products.
I've got a 118 personal, a 120 general and the 124 frontiersmsn. I love buck knives. My dad gave me the 120 and it don't have a symbol on it to date it back to a date. It just has a buck 120 stamp on it.
I have this one and almost the entire line in Cocobolo. Just found the 117 Brahma and a 101 at a store here in Canada last week. I got the 120 last month cause it's discontinued. All I'm missing is the hollow handle knife with the spikes that I used to own but sold to a friend who still has it. Can't remember the model number offhand. Time to make a deal.
I really love the look of the Frontiersman... that said, it's one of those knives that I've yet to find any practical use for. The handle is incredibly blocky, I could see it being fatiguing for extended use. The hollow grind is probably decent for slicing and whittling, though perhaps not robust enough for heavier work. The guard is a bit of an obstacle for many tasks. It's heavier than a lot of other knives that can do many given tasks better... be it my leuku, Mora, North Arm Lynx (in Magnacut!), etc... the Buck will resist corrosion better than all but the Lynx, but won't hold an edge as long as any of them. But... it really is a handsome looking specimen.
I have the 124 , but prefer the buck 120 or 119 . I got my new buck 124 and removed knife scales and made new ones that fit my hand better . But , don’t use it much . I do a lot of hiking , camping and hunting . The buck 124 is a heavy knife . I am not to worried about full tang or rat tail tang the goes to the pommel of the knife . I have abused my 120 for around 45 years or more and still going strong . The buck 124 would make a good truck knife .
Okay, got mine, and its a piece of ART in it's own right. I did try a chopping test, and the blade is way to light. All the weight is in the handle. It does however, split small stuff nicely. But like you I always carry either a hatchet, tomahawk, or an axe, depending on what I'm doing. But yes, its a very very nice knife.
When Buck brought back this knife, I had to get it before it disappeared again. I love the full-tang construction and the hollow grind. Yes, the handle is a little big, but I won't be using this knife for super-delicate tasks, anyway. And I certainly won't be batoning with it, as only inbred TH-camrs abuse knives in that way. The 124 makes an excellent camp knife and just feels good on your hip as you're walking through the woods. A big "Bowie-style" knife with the corrosion resistance of stainless steel and the ease of sharpening and toughness as carbon steel simply can't be beat.
Okay, just got mine today. Its a very sharp knife, and I am looking forward to using it. As far as oiling the knife, that's a no brainier. But, you should also wipe down the leather sheath with mineral oil, to water proof it. Leather will last a very long time if taken care of. The only buck in the 100 Classic series, well two, I am missing the General, and the Skinner. Not sure if I will buy the Skinner though. But the General, yep, by the end of summer. I've been collecting Buck Sheath knives since the early 80's. And they are still great knives.
I still have my 112 (and pouch )I bought way back in 1983. I carry it with me most days. I did damage it in 1993 when I accidently dropped it onto a concrete floor and broke about 1.5mm off the tip. I reshaped it and you would never know I damaged it. It has 112 and U.S.A. stamped on the blade. I wouldn't be surprised if some Buck knife models now have China stamped on their blades, just like most stuff you buy nowadays.
@@michaelwittmann2644 Anytime! The problem for Buck and many American companies, are stores like Walmart, who demand items with dirt cheap price points, to compete with the Chinese crap, that Walmart brings in. That’s the reason Buck moved out of Commiefornia in the early 2000s. That state and its policies made it almost impossible to conduct business. Add to that a consumer base that demands cheap Chinese crap, and it’s a wonder companies like Buck survive at all. Buck makes solid products, at a very reasonable price, and they back it up. For a 420HC knife, despite its modern-ish design features, it's rather expensive. Plus, it seems to be currently discontinued, or a special 2021 version is about to come out. Regardless, you can almost get a Swamp Rat or something for this price...
Very nice tabletop review sir👍 I also own this very knife but it's an older version with brown wood handle and brown leather sheath. I don't recall when I picked it up but it must have been in the late 80s or early 90s. It's a wonderful knife and what Buck does with the 420 steel is amazing!! Something I found out, not too long ago about oiling a knife. Use Pam Original non stick spray. Why, it kinda dries and leaves a very nice protective coat on the knife.
Looks like buck has a pretty good following The 124 been my go to knife for years Skinned out bue coup hogs and a few Gators , have7 or 8 110s and112s and assorted others
It is by no means a "Rat Tail" tang. It is an over molded tang, necked down just enough to get the guard on. I have the 118 Personal, the 105 Pathfinder, and the 119 Special, and I've used a magnet on all three. The tang goes all the way into the pommel. Just my two cents worth.
@@leejensen2574 I point you to this video, which shows it is a full length tang, with the handle going over the tang, thus a Over Molded Tang. You told me to check out a TH-cam video, now its up to you.th-cam.com/video/oouKW5u-QMg/w-d-xo.html
Rat tail means that it gets narrower than the width of the blade and goes all the way back. A tapered tang tapers and doesn’t go all the way through the handle. knife-depot.com/pages/all-about-knife-tangs
I've been using the 124 for over 40 years still , using the same knife . The sheath wore out about 7 years ago and bought a replacement from Patriot Leather , excellent sheath , better than what Buck provides.
It definitely looks like quality, not sure if id use it much as a daily, cuz of the weight, ive got the 112 for that, wouldn't want a daily to weigh much more:)
A little bit more history for those who may want it: As I understand it, the 122/124 is a design evolution of Frank Buck, who had a penchant for enormous blades. The first generation featured a steel pommel and crossguard, phenoolic grip with a hidden tang and smaller, more rounded comfy feel more like a 119, a near 7" blade and depending on who built it that day often a wicked hollow grind that terminates to an essentially unbreakably fat and strong tip. The blades used to be superior if more rust prone but still true stainless 440c, and were delivered with a note explaining why that was superior in balanced function to higher chrome content, like they oddly but understandably enough use now because most people neglect their knives more often than they carry or use them. The first gen ones stand out as a testament to the skill and passion of Frank Buck for making a brutally strong choppy slicey stabby knife that performs like a short sword in the size range of a small bowie. It is a true go anywhere, do anything design. The newer design is close, I just wish the current production ones weren't so blocky in the hand, featured a full size blade and had better steel as a standard option.
Buck’s Bos-treated 420HC almost reaches the edge retention of their old 440C, and it surpasses the edge retention of a lot of modern 440C offerings from other companies. Look into Cedric and Ada’s edge retention testing, Buck’s internal testing, and a myriad of other controlled tests that have shown similar results. In addition, Buck’s 420HC has vastly superior strength when compared to 440C, as shown in the charts and studies of Dr. Larrin, a world-renowned metallurgist. In fact, it isn’t even a close comparison. Buck’s newer knives, in Bos-treated 420HC, are objectively much tougher than their older ones in 440C. Factoring in the massive boost in corrosion resistance, it is easy to see that the Bos-treated 420HC is, in general, an upgrade to the original 440C.
Shes a beauty. 420 is said to be cheap, but BUCK 420 is different from ANY other 420 steel. I've NEVER had a Buck product rust (with proper care) I'm interested in the new premium steel models...pricey, but I'm sure the quality is best. I trust Buck to do things correct
I am a new subscriber I love buck knives I have the Ranger and the buck sprint those blades come out so sharp from the factory it’s unbelievable what is the knife they used in the movie Scream
My parents gave me a 124 back in the 1970s they had it in grave with my name in the date on it I gifted it to my son who has the same name as me that's an heirloom for him to cherish but now I want it back so I think I'm going to buy another one I'm a big fan of the 119 and the 120 but the 124 is the king
Yes I'm not sure its a little steep. Not if they had switched the blade material i would get it. But Considering that the ebony is the base handle material for the 110 ill pass.
Gotta love how someone thought to name a really good diver's knife after Captain Nemo from Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas. Fun fact, Nemo translates into "no one".
I have a 1986 model 124 and it has a tan leather sheath not a black one. It looks the same as your 120 sheath only tan leather with white stitching and it is original to the knife. I bought it at K-mart in 1986 along with a 119.
Need to be careful on eBay and Amazon, there are a lot of counterfeits. Buy from Buck directly or one of their authorized retailers: BladeHQ, Knife Center, DLT Trading, Cabelas, etc.
Nice review ! I also have the 119 the 120 and 124. I like the full tang construction of the Frontiersman. But it is not the best chopper, it is not blade- but handle-heavy. :-( The knife is very heavy. For cutting tasks, I prefer the 119 , it is lighter on your belt, and I find it just a more functional knife. For heavy duty chopping and batoning tasks there are better bowie-style knives on the market.....

Unfortunately none of this knives capabilities were demonstrated. Thanks, love it . hope can own one 124 one day.
Hope so too - it's a beautiful knife!
Looks like buck has a pretty good following
The 124 been my go to knife for years
Skinned out bue coup hogs and a few
Gators , have7 or 8 110s and112s and assorted others
They have great knives! Thanks for sharing!
It is by no means a "Rat Tail" tang. It is an over molded tang, necked down just enough to get the guard on. I have the 118 Personal, the 105 Pathfinder, and the 119 Special, and I've used a magnet on all three. The tang goes all the way into the pommel. Just my two cents worth.
watch the U-Tube tour of the buck factory it is not an over molded tang but it does give you a better idea of how they are made
@@leejensen2574 I point you to this video, which shows it is a full length tang, with the handle going over the tang, thus a Over Molded Tang. You told me to check out a TH-cam video, now its up to you.th-cam.com/video/oouKW5u-QMg/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!
Rat tail means that it gets narrower than the width of the blade and goes all the way back. A tapered tang tapers and doesn’t go all the way through the handle.

I love my 124 because it has a rosewood handle. Buck didn’t make many of them
Oh nice! Keep onto that one!
I’m trying to find one where I live in Canada. I will have to special order it through a Cutlery Store. Once I get my 124 that will be my EDC Knife.
@Whirlwind of Weapons None of your business
@Whirlwind of Weapons Well then you know we can carry a Samurai Sword on our backs if it’s in the open.
It’s an amazing knife!
I've been using the 124 for over 40 years still , using the same knife . The sheath wore out about 7 years ago and bought a replacement from Patriot Leather , excellent sheath , better than what Buck provides.
40 years! Impressive! Thanks for watching!
how come everything I like gets discontinued?
What is the price of the Buck knife 124 frontier
$159 on Buck's website
@@bergtechautomotive8886 185 nowadays. But, just ordered one on discount.
Thanks for watching!
It definitely looks like quality, not sure if id use it much as a daily, cuz of the weight, ive got the 112 for that, wouldn't want a daily to weigh much more:)
Yeah, it’s definitely one to use for those camping/hunting trips. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!
@@bushcraftdevotions5851 thanks for the interesting video👍
I've got one from the 90's my dad bought me. I replaced the sheath with a custom leather one, it's so much better. I never liked the one it came with.
I’m sure you prize that knife! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!
A little bit more history for those who may want it:
As I understand it, the 122/124 is a design evolution of Frank Buck, who had a penchant for enormous blades.
Thanks for sharing that information! I appreciate that!
I bought mine in the mid 80's !
Awesome - how’s it holding up? But my first 120 General in 1989.
They do amazing for sure! Thanks for watching!
Wow the Message from Buck Talking about the Lord God well that is So Awesome...Thumbs up...
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!
This is my favorite fixed blade knife
Mine too!
Really like those sheaths..
I do as well!
Why was it discontinued?
I wish it came in S35VN.
Probably only a matter of time!
I am a new subscriber I love buck knives I have the Ranger and the buck sprint those blades come out so sharp from the factory it’s unbelievable what is the knife they used in the movie Scream
120 was used in Scream .
The 120 General is the one used.
It is good that it has bigger handles. Some of them are way too small.
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!
What's the thickness like right behind the edge?
I want the 120 or 124 , wondering if it would make a good feild knife to add to my battle belt or plate carrier?
Definitely do some google searches for that from others. I hope you get the answers you need.

My favorite knife
Great review
Thank you!
There's a 2021 model coming out with an Ebony handle but for an extra $75 I'm not sure its worth it over the MIcarta.
Yes I'm not sure its a little steep. Not if they had switched the blade material i would get it. But Considering that the ebony is the base handle material for the 110 ill pass.
I like the original Micarta. Thanks for watching!
I want one in d2 or s45v. buck 102 is a good knife to carry too
I like that one, but the price point is the same as the 119 special. I have a hard time pulling the trigger with about the third of material.
Gotta love how someone thought to name a really good diver's knife after Captain Nemo from Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas. Fun fact, Nemo translates into "no one".
every once in a while, you need to take the tarnish off with some Flix (may not be getting the name right)
Absolutely or Brasso - that works as well. Thanks for watching!
I have a 1986 model 124 and it has a tan leather sheath not a black one. It looks the same as your 120 sheath only tan leather with white stitching and it is original to the knife. I bought it at K-mart in 1986 along with a 119.
Thanks for watching!
I want 1 of these so bad but the money holy moly the money
Cool knife! I am just to cheap to buy one. For the present time.
I’ll be reviewing some budget friendly knives as well! Thanks for watching!
Holy crap hopped on eBay to pick one up ...2-500$😳
Go on Amazon or smoky mountain knife works they are cheaper still at $150 but it is worth every penny I love mine 👍👍
Need to be careful on eBay and Amazon, there are a lot of counterfeits. Buy from Buck directly or one of their authorized retailers: BladeHQ, Knife Center, DLT Trading, Cabelas, etc.
You will love them! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!
is this a good deer skinnier and gutting knife
It is, but some don’t like the length and favor a smaller blade.
can`t buy one in the netherlands, very very sad
Oh man. Watch my latest video on this knife. Might change your perspective a little
Do u know where I could buy
Amazon is the easiest.
Nice review !
I also have the 119 the 120 and 124.
I like the full tang construction of the Frontiersman.
But it is not the best chopper, it is not blade- but handle-heavy. :-(
The knife is very heavy.
For cutting tasks, I prefer the 119 , it is lighter on your belt, and I find it just a more functional knife.
For heavy duty chopping and batoning tasks there are better bowie-style knives on the market.....
Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment! I appreciate it!
I've used Buck knives from 1970 to date
Oh then you’re a fan like I am! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!
They DO NOT have skimpy rat tail tangs. They have hidden tangs, which are stronger, like the Kabar.
Rat tail means that it gets narrower than the width of the blade and goes all the way back. A tapered tang tapers and doesn’t go all the way through the handle.

Buck 19 blade steel is 420 hc. its not 440a or 440c steel which is a harder steel. I own a buck 19 and i will keep it cause i lost the receipt.

I love all my buck knives and I have alot, according to my wife I have to many. If she only knew how many knives (different brands like case, old timer, uncle henry, schrade etc.) I actually have.😂
@@dustinweaver3032 There could be worse things to collect! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!
That cross guard looks like it might get in the way. Why so large? It's not a fighting knife.
In actual use the cross guard isn’t an issue at all. Love mine.
it is my love 119
That's a good one!
God's love is great and holy. John 3:16 tells you all. Now I love Buck even more.
Absolutely! Thanks for watching!
👎🏻 Nice video showing this beautiful knife. From an appearance perspective I can see why you like it so much. As with other Buck knives it appears to be well made from quality materials.
Unfortunately none of this knives capabilities were demonstrated. I wish that some (hopefully 50% or more) of your video had been dedicated to showing this knife in action - a picture is worth a thousand words.
Yes, thanks - I plan on doing some videos with doing just that.
@@bushcraftdevotions5851 I look forward to watching that upcoming video.
Glad there are Bible verses on their product. 💪💪💪🙏🙏
Not trying to be funny. Do you use that knife? It looks to clean. Are you more of a collector?
This one I reviewed before I put it to the test. Planning to do some functionality review videos soon! I don’t try to break the knife- their not cheap! Lol
That thing is huge
It sure is! Thanks for watching!
does the blade rust?
No its stainless.
