I had my very FIRST gun/safety lesson this morning and fired my 1911 for the first time. Was home later this evening practicing my racking, locking and dry firing for my homework and it seemed a small piece of metal flew off after a couple runs (was not totally sure it came from the gun and had no idea where it would have belonged). Re racked to dry fire again and a long pin flew out and hit the floor. [A spring also fell out but didn't find that til later]. I then began searching online to figure out 'what pieces I just lost here on my very FIRST day haha. Came across your video! It was my firing pin, my spring and my stop plate! With your help, I put my gun back together again. I did not have pistol repair on my bingo card for today hahahaha. Your video was very clear so even someone like me was able to put the pin and stop plate back on. Now to figure out how they popped off in the first place since my husband had this pistol completely overhauled by a pro shop last Summer to make sure it was dialed in. THANK YOU for making this awesome content!
That is really strange that your firing pin/spring/stop plate came out of the slide while racking and dry firing. As you know by now by re-assembling this is not a very complex assembly, but I would check the fitment of the stop plate in the slide without the firing pin and spring installed - it shouldn't be extremely tight but also shouldn't fall out either. If it is too loose I would return it to the pro shop that did the overhaul for them to re-check.
It never fails to learn something from any of your videos, no matter if your video is 4 years old, thank you. I’ll be getting my first 1911 by end of this year, basic entry level and put everything I’ve learned from your videos to teach myself and hopefully make an educated purchase on my next level up. Hopefully a custom Fusion.
Great video on the “slide stop”. Just kidding. That was what you kept saying in the last video I watched. Actually, I’ve learned a lot from your videos Mr Serva. Thanks and I have much respect for your knowledge and Fusion Firearms company.
I have one stop plate that is almost square (very small radius) on the lower edge that rides on the hammer and another stop plate that has a large radius on that edge. Can you explain what that is all about please?
Stop plates, Yes, there are 2 styles, one is the standard radius style which is the traditional and the other is the flat bottom style. Some say the flat bottom style helps reduce recoil. I have never done any comprehensive testing of this, but I have used both styles on 1000’s of pistols and I have never really seen any real difference. But we do offer both styles for whatever you favor. Good question.
