- How many remember Ecko Unlimited? In the 90s and early 2000s Ecko cemented themselves in the culture as one of the ambassadors to the mainstream. Before streetwear was streetwear, brands like Ecko were giving us a glimpse of the future which was to come.
Ecko came along in a time before the industry began to respect the street market as viable, but the wave that they contributed in creating would go on to change the industry as they knew it. Ecko rose to ungodly heights, at one point cresting $1 billion in sales at their peak.
But what happened? How did Ecko fall from the world renowned pedestal in which they stood, to the relative obscurity they find themselves in today? We'll let's find out. I'm Nate the Great from Takeflight214.com and this is the rise and fall of Ecko Unltd.

I rocked Ecko hard during it's rise. Then being the big Star Wars fan that I was I ate up their collaboration line. Good times. Sad to see Ecko sold for $5 or as low as $2 clearance at Ross.
Hey you're definitely right bruh, i remember how dope Echo was early on before the 2000's and the quality and overall creativity and designs was like early LRG pieces.
I mean they had a Marvel x Echo line that was CRAZY. But like you stated after awhile it was just generic pieces with a rhino stamped on the clothing item.
Yeah at the end it seems like they just stopped trying

Ecko fell off with the designs, it got wack. Should off kept it classic like supreme. Too saturated, the rhino tee could have been the supreme logo shirt if it were released that way. It was too available and tried to sell products way too fast.
Ecko was the hottest brand around the millennium. That Rhino was a symbol of drip. I remember a buddy of mine was the first to get any and he got the shoes, the jeans, the red shirt and the red hat. But within 2 years, everyone had that stuff and it was everywhere.
I rocked it in the 90s and I still do in 2024. I just like the look and feel of ecko.

Ecko was my shit!!! I still have prices from the early 2000s in my closet. As much as i liked Ecko, i loved their Cut & Sew line.
The Cut & Sew line is what got me into Ecko, the best designs for sure
My father had an Ecko hoodie in his mid to late twenties, when I was little. It was his favorite piece. I just saw it when I rewatched a movie where they had one. I think it deserves a comeback and today you would stick out with one, since nobody has one, at least where I’m from.
Walmart is stocking them everywhere.
I am from Germany and I haven’t seen any of them in Europe since I don’t know when. Maybe they are mainly in the US.
where I live I've seen quite alot of people rock ecko including myself. i was a baby when it was a poppin brand but, its slowly coming back. 😂

By the time I came around the brand was just the brand you would see tweakers and poor people wear. The problem with shit being sold at discount stores like a Ross TJ Maxx or Marshalls is that it devalues the brand and becomes something for poor people or people of bad style
Oh man, in 2000-2003, if you were wearing Ecko (in South Florida, at least), you were instantly popular. haha
T & C surf was kind of there. Was a surf, boogie boarder,skater/tagger wear before stussy. Echo grew too fast, especially when they made it in with UFC. Probably should have had different designs for each type of culture presented. Street, fight, urban, suburban designs and such.

This brand did not come from out culture but profited from it. Its good that they failed. Fubu and Karl Kani are still around.

Mark eckos getting up taught me how to do graffiti with stencils and about the graffiti lifestyle it was a great game and great brand

With all due respect Stussy was but we looked at it as a skater brand and not streetwear. Ecko was streetwear to us due to being urban. But Stussy was first.

@@takeflight2142I’m from Jersey so we looked at Ecko as being hip hop/graffiti to the forefront in clothing. Stussy was more West coast. East coast ppl thought it was a skater surf brand. Didn’t think of it as street.
I saw Stussy as skate/surf so it was its own niche with that community

Marc was a visionary...but definitely bite off more than he could chew and overspent. His NYC sales headquarters was absolutely insane. He also launched another line than was called Ecko Cut n Sew
It was very successful for my store. It was more grown up looks. When it launched they were giving their best retailers beautiful and definitely very expensive store fixtures for the brand. The company always took great care of us their accounts. Reps were great as well. Iconic really took it on the chin with purchases like rocawear,Ecko and mossimo. I was in men's retail from 87 until 2013. Great times,amazing stories and people. Pretty much all gone now. Much of it because of fast fashion....cheap stuff
I can’t agree one thing about hip hop fashion is once it becomes mainstream the culture wants nothing to do with it….so with all fashions it’s just trends

I remember seeing ecko everywhere at local department stores when I was young and always thought it was corny or just some random brand. Now that I’m older and being into graffiti I have more respect for the brand especially finding out they made the graffiti game. This week I saw through a window at a random clothing store near my house ecko unlimited boots, I was so surprised so I’m going to go check those out. I haven’t seen the brand anywhere in years. Nailed it. We must be a similar age, I’m 24 and same I used to see this stuff and I always thought it looked so corny I had no idea the history until I watched this video. Pretty similar to when I see DC, Hurley, or DGK today

I was a fan Ecko in the day in fact i am truning 40 this year and i still wear Ecko clothing if i like it but the honest reason i am here is because i seen Ecko being sold in wal-mart some of it looks nice its the one i still buy now like i said i been wesring Ecko since i was a teenager but i guess i got my answers as to why its in wal-mart because its everywere now and easy to get its not completely cheap tho but it was more expensive back in the day 🤷♂️😎
