7.3 is almost bomb proof, worth every penny. I've got the original 2001 Platinum Edition been a great truck for 22 years 👍👍

Very good video!! It takes a lot of cranking to fill and pressurize the high pressure oil rail once they've been sitting for a while.

With all the who do on the 5.9 cummins you would think that everything should be powered by them. I found that the 7.3 with the exception of cam sensors was my biggest issue of the day. I finally got smart and saved the old ones. When the cam sensor would die, I simply put one of the old ones back in and it worked just fine. I also ran the IDI engines and what I did with them was to make copper lines for those pesky rubber hoses that never stopped dribbling no matter what it seemed. It not only fixed that issue, they did start a bit easier. It was when I realized those smaller but high torque starters were the deal of the day! As long as you had fuel, all the fuel system was a go, they would start in minus ten or a little more without plugged in. I will admit to the fact that when parked at the airport for two or more weeks and it was a constant temp of minus twenty plus ferinhight, down right chilly in any neighborhood. I got a either start adaptor put on (I am a heavy equipment mechanic of almost fifty years, ya, my grandkids are a touch older than you. (no offence intended) I have seen men who worked all their lives as mechanics. They really should of been baby setters or some other less skilled work. And to prove the point, I had a son who from the time he could escape his mothers reach, was at my side trying to mimic me and would make engine noises as I worked on some rig. I finally told my wife if he wants out with me, I will take full responsibility for his safety and he does so love being with me. I almost had filed for divorce over his wanting to be with me. She also knew that at some time and place, when dad passed on, in his will and a registered will, I would have a close to eight figure dollar deposit plus enough land to make most anyone in the area.... Lets just say nearly dirty rich, mighty close to filthy rich. Getting back to my son, a close to Christmas baby as his was on the twenty secondth of december. Our love for each other was damn tight. I would suppose that you are now understanding my past tense referral. At the age of nineteen, he came down with infantile leukemia..... and I have never ever prayed so hard in my entire life. Twenty months, five days later, He said "I love you poppa".... his eyes never closed but I knew, so when I walked out to the hallway... I never had to say a word, their monitors had been on all the way. His frame had went from the two hundred and five pounds down to eighty eight pounds. With only chips of ice and his intravenous feeding system just wasn't a breakfast of ten hotcakes, a half pound of canadian bacon, a dozen eggs plus someone to butter homemade bread that was toasted. To him, it was just a snack as he could of ate his meal he loved most, I could of paid for his meals at three houses and still been cheaper .... don't worry as I really did not care how much my boy ate as long as he didn't waste food, I would load his plate or maybe I should say "PLATES" yet if his sister who would eyeball something.... he made sure of her plate getting anything she wanted. No hanky panky, just genuine love for each other which is my lead in..... ya they were strongly loved to each other and so when boys came to see her, (she was almost four years older than him) he would stay out of sight from each other. She did not know that he stayed out of sight or if she kissed the boyfriend... all cool as he felt at some time she would meet the right fellow and get married which she did. Lets get back to my boy. He had his own tool set which involved in many of my older starting tools that I had carried to a good many jobs. Now I did pay him for his work in my garage so money he saved himself built up his collection plus my other mechanics who had been with me a good bit would make their way to him as they upgraded their collection. I had pulled out a 235 cummins engine out of a mill I had and replaced that older engine for a fairly nice running detroit... I had good intentions of building that cummins for a truck that had really sat toooooo long as in probably fifteen years in the woods kind of thing. This is before the computer, the google the info stuff. So that old ford that sat in the woods under trees, a nineteen fifty six F600 dump bed flatbed truck but ... how to say... well into the mushroom raising status plus rats.... a genuinely nasty but saveable rig. The odd part is that he and his sister cleaned out the truck and something should of made me aware of something going on. Debbie just loved anything that had fur on it. So one day in the woodshed, my son is making her a cage for her new critter and had I known it was going to be a RAT CAGE, Rat would of been a meal for one of our barn cats! Once in the cage, and in her bedroom.... well lets say I would of been in mortal danger from the females in the shanty! I still had no clue to my kids doings... they were basically just damn good kids. I had put the cummins in the backside of the barn so to keep our mechanic from robbing parts off of it. Can you imagine what went through my head when my son was waking me up as a can of beer just before diner plus my meal I consumed in that said chair. ( I was putting in 600 plus hours a week) My son nearly broke my chair to wake me up and so now awake where is the fire?!??/LOL. He gets me standing and lets say that he is now close to fourteen years of age, his sister getting close to being a old maid according to her and her mother. She (Debbie) was just seventeen. Considering now things are the way they are today, maybe she was but go figure. She is fifty nine now.
Thomas had me standing with a fresh hot cup of coffee waking me up as I did love a good hot cup of strong black coffee. I get outside and all the kids are giving some hand signals so I wait patiently. All the sudden out rolls that old fifty six ford heavy one ton for the best of my imagination. My son had placed in it the cummins engine with just the five speed fuller transmission. They did their combined best to get it close to right an for the most part, it was. They had scrapped all of the engine off, replaced seals on the front of the crank, and my son had fabricated a new motor mount for the front. Their combined talents and all, got the engine in and running and sure, it was a tired engine. I never said otherwise but it was clean, all gaskets he could change with what they knew combined were replaced with mostly gaskets they made themselves. (why am I telling you, a total stranger, about all of this is more than I really know but now seems though, I should finish. The back of the engine was supported on just the back of the transmission so we as a team (me the new member) got the better amount of mounts in the truck. What surprised me most is how well they got it setting and running. He had put one driveshaft inside the other then welded them together to make a drive shaft..... this is how you learn about "timing a shaft". They might of been proud kids but lets just say that I think about it now and then. His sister and sidekick for the most part drove right at me and the stopped it making me aware they had got the brakes working pretty good. As I remember, the truck had those miserable dayton rims so they had mounted all of my old tires that were old takeoffs. The fronts were decent... and just imagine. Paint brush painted frame, rims, fenders, and cabin.... inside and out so a fairly nice green paint with black fenders, running boards and the rims were painted black. That cabin or cab, was a very dark green outside and the insides were of a lighter color of green. Now get this.... the seat was reupholstered by them with a dog imprint on the back of the seat, the part that you put your back against. The floor was new wood with some carpet they found somehow and cut to fit. Just two kids fourteen and seventeen. Oh yeah, they had farmed some of their work to others and of course MOTHER, as she was in on the getting my daughters hair degreased. I am a half native and my kids must lean towards that as they carry the native skin tones. Me, my butt is white as rice but I seen my mom go from a lighter color of skin in the winter but just like a hickory nut come the summer months. Sure it really needed a better radiator and brakes that could stop a tank as little gas truck brakes just ain't enough. The point is, my two young kids who would of walked through a burning house fire for me. There was no doubts in their heads if or not their dad did love them. My daughter did grow up to do cars or trucks that she would buy at local auctions and flip on the radio type of ads. She never attained any great skills as a mechanic an sometimes getting a call in the wee hours of the night or say way early in the morning as like say 3:00 AM I could of really not enjoyed but when she needs me, she knows I can help her get where she is trying to get to. I remember the fact that I was forty seven when he past on and I went on a terrible running drunk after the funeral. Now it only lasted about a month.... give or take some days, but then I quit drinking all together again. If your still with me, thank you but really.. I should not of got so carried away on your channel. You have a great day and many days as we just need more people like yourself who will salvage these tired trucks, give them another chance to run again or make someone else happy once cleaned up and most part running.

My oldest so was the same way. ALWAYS beside me working on trucks, or anything else! He became a certified diesel/heavy equipment mechanic, the student has surpassed the teacher!
He's my BEST friend, if I ever lost him I'd be DEVISTATED! That's true of any of the four kids but he's my buddy for life.

That second solenoid closest to you is for the intake air heater and only comes on when it’s super cold out. It’s an extreme weather heater for below 0 temps

Glow plugs run for a set amount of time. Much longer than you cycling the key, just turn it on accessories and wait on it. Then start
Yep, the dash glow plug light shows you how long they are on for
no the dash glow plug light has NOTHING to do with how long the glow plugs cycle, on a cold engine they will stay on for 2 minutes, watch the volt meter on the dash that will tell you when they go off. or hook up a test light to the relay and watch it , the engine will start and run and the glow plugs will STILL be on. It is the way ford designed it.@@bucketofcarz

Diesels are nice and if you can find the early models before EGR and DEF and particulate filters you will be pleasantly surprised by a simple design with almost no computer problems and if it’s treated well it’s a reliable whip.

Fun to watch, I've got several 7.3 videos as well as what to do when they won't start. You really need to get a OBD2 adapter so you can check codes BASF makes a great one that works on everything. I have videos about using a tablet and adapter for under $30 to pull codes and buzz test injectors ect. Thanks for sharing, though I cringed when you started with the ether/idiot spray (as I call it), don't use the spray. I've been working on these for 10 years and I've never used ether to start a no start, it was never needed and on these it just damages them.
thanks for the comment. Problem is with when they sit for a long time, no codes will show up. But yes, the higher end ones that connect to a computer will show you what is or isn't working. For the most part. they are simple and can be figured out without a scanner. and its a good to know how to diagnose without one because sometimes, they are not with you when you break down out of town. But yeah, Ether isn't good, but I also didn't spray a lot. some people go nuts with it! Hope you subscribed, and thanks again for commenting.

Wish I would have started with something to scan with, so cheap anyone can afford it. I';ve since got the nexq setup so I can scan the MD/HD stuff and T444E 7.3 flavor stuff. I got out of the pickups and prefer dealing with buses now personally so we aren't competing on new content no worries lol.

Not sure if you touch on it later or not. I'm right at the start. That "star" shaped socket is to lower or raise the spare tire. I have had to use mine when I had a blow out towing some stuff last winter.

nice job, i thought for sure you had a bad CPS with no movement on the tach when cranking. I'd double check CPS to make sure it wasn't an intermittent issue

Appreciate your troubleshooting skills. At around 24 minutes you are tapping on I think the IPR injector pressure regulator. I don’t know but heard others say that if your ipr isn’t working you won’t have any tachometer rpm’s when you crank it first part of video shows zero rpm’s on dash when turning the engine over.

pretty sure thats your cam position sensor that does that. but could be both not 100%. but yeah he is tapping the IPR valve on your high pressure oil pump

These are one truck that have not depreciated in 10 years. If anything they have gone up! But in all fairness I bought it as a none runner. If the engine was toast it wouldn’t have been such a great deal…
that other relay is the air intake heater. with old and sitting trucks go through the whole harness, usually cracked wires and shorts or broken connections. especially if there were mice, also drain and clean out fuel bowl, check oil level if not oil it will not run, with the heui system pop
I no longer have this truck but it is driven daily and I see it all the time.

Lock tool in glove box is for the spare tire hanger to lower it
Pretty sure it is a wheel lock for the wheels on the truck. The spare is dropped with the jack tools under the hood. no special wheel lock is needed, just the long rod with a square end. Thanks for the comment, hope you subscribed and comment on other videos.

I have a comment. I have a 1995 f350 powertstroke 7.3 and I rebuilt the entire engine from the block up, replacing everything with new. So i think i know this engine quite well. That being said..... the way the glow plug system works is you turn to to heat glow plugs .... then the light goes out after a few seconds..... just because the light went out means nothing the glow plugs will CONTINUE to HEAT for up to 2 minutes. Did the truck have a volt gauage ? if so that will tell you when the glow plugs are off. You are not even heating them if you go by the idiot light. Your not even getting them to glow really the way your doing it . Remember your heating the combustion chamber sometimes it takes awhile , thats why they made the system to stay on heating for up to 2 minutes.
Glad I kept you entertained with a "will it run video" Perhaps you should do some "how it works" videos ;). At no point do I ever proclaim to be a mechanic...
when they dont start when cold or not cold and need to be plugged in the injectors are going bad. Also the glow plug relay could be bad or glow plugs bad, very easy to test them. Also uvch become disconnected so glow plugs dont have connections.

Did you check the HPOP reservoir to see if it was full of oil? I don't know why it didn't run for the previous owner, but after sitting for a couple years the oil will most likely drain out of the reservoir and maybe the oil rails in the heads too so it won't fire the injectors. You would have to crank the engine about as long as you did to fill the oil rails back up before it will fire.
If you watch the full video, it’s pretty clear why it was not running.
But I am curious. How do you check the Hpop for oil?
@@bucketofcarz Yep I watched the whole video. The leaking fuel line and the IPR wiring fixes were definitely needed. I'm just saying the HPOP oil is one of the first things to check on a HEUI injection system that hasn't been run in 2 years. There's an allen head plug (5mm if I remember correctly) on top of the HPOP reservoir. Pull that plug and make sure it is full of oil. Even if it is it doesn't mean the oil hasn't leaked out of the rails on the heads. It will take quite a while of cranking to get those rails filled so the injectors can fire so I'd do that before shooting the ether at her.

@@bucketofcarz There's an allen head plug on top of the HPOP reservoir. Pull that plug and make sure the reservoir is full of oil. If it isn't, fill the reservoir up with engine oil through the plug hole. It could save quite a bit of cranking time.
@@bucketofcarz there is a resevoir behind the fuel bowl, it has an allen head you can stick something down in it like a dipstick perhaps to see if it has oil, and you can fill it there also. but when you turn key on it should fill that up anyways

Cool my truck is a 2000 dodge ram Laramie slt longbed quad cab 1500 318 5.2 litre magnum V8 and it has the premium infinity sound system with the amplifier filter crap anyways it has a factory infinity by Chrysler am/fm cd player stereo cassette tape player receiver
It is crazy to think that in the 2000's vehicles still came with a cassette option. Proves that it really wasn't that long ago that people still used these.
Wish i had the 7.3. My 6 liter is shit for repairs on the engine. Now i need a Box for my 04 as rusted through the bed rails. BTW. When my 04 batteries are stone dead the fuel gauge reads less than a 1/4 tank. After charging them it reads full again. It may have something to do with the Electronic dash ?

You have 1 bad cylinder. Listen when you crank it and you get that one spot where it speeds up. That is the weak cylinder. Maybe a bad injector.

The International 7.3 was good the Ford 7.3 had a weak lower end Ford used both engines the International had a great block and the Ford a blue block

as far as i know International made ALL the 7.3 powerstrokes for Ford, are you saying Ford copied the already made international 7.3 ( T44E ) Navistar engine ? and some have ford and some International ? if you saying that you are wrong sorry. 2011 Ford started to make in house the 6.7

I'm just saying if you got a o.b.s or a 1999 to a 2002 .7.3 5speed standard or a 6 speed .for the who pull trailers everyday, the ride doesn't mean nothing. Compared to the strength. You run all day all night .I will never leave you stranded on the side of the road .their in high demand right now. Every one wants 1. Have a Blessed day
With the battery power its. Not going to start any ways it has to spin at 3500 rpms or they won't start so at that point ur wasting ur time & never use starting fluid on ur diesel
I have about 20 of these trucks, and although unlikely, they can and have started with low cranking. But highly unlikely if they have been sitting.

@@bucketofcarz take off the panel on the door from the inside and on the dodge ram there's a vent push the vent in the door and remove it sideways and use pliers to pull the latch rod up while opening the door,of that's not happening you will have to cut or grind off where the latch catches on the door

Desirable, that's a bit of a joke more like unreliable, especially the 2018 and up.
A fencing company near my house, all they were pretty much driving was, F2-F3-F450s and Dodges, the Fords are nothing but trouble, always in the shop.
The latest, a 2022 F-450 flatbed with 500k on it in the shop with a blown engine, it definitely wasn't the first truck with a blown engine they're slowly switching their fleet over to Chevys and Dodges
My father-in-law works for the company, he's unfortunately driving a Ford, that's on it's second or third engine now, the first one replaced under warranty the second one Ford told them to F*** Off the truck has under 100,000 km and its a 2021, he wishes they would let him drive a Chevy or Dodge.
It's really embarrassing for the company being broke down in Toronto and having to get a flatbed to tow your truck back.
Different strokes for different folks. I don't really get into the whole pissing match to try and say this is better or that is better. The fact is, there are many different vehicles that work for different people. I know for my business, these trucks sure have been reliable. I have a 2022 F450 as well, might do a video on it. No issues on it, but new vehicles do scare me. Weather its dodge, chevy, ford, Honda, I don't care, they all have strong and weak points, different desires and purpose.

my two thousand two 7.3 it starts at 0 degrees these engines have to have a pressure so that the injectors can work properly it is not expensive to fix
